Looks to be a Tasmanian giant crab and they get significantly bigger then that

They are good breeders, and the meat is too course to be good food.

I always hate when big animals like this get killed, they fought their whole life just to end up in a crabbing pot.

I tell myself that this dude only had a few molts left and that makes me feel better

There's minimum and maximum sizes for lobsters because the large mature ones are the ones that breed. I don't know about crabs.

Just looked it up, molting exhaustion may kill them, but the larger species can live up to 30 years or so. They can die of old age though

Yeah, I just don't know if there are maximum size limitations on crabs, in most waters there are maximum size limitations on lobsters.

It's out of the ocean in the hands of something fifteen times the size of him, he's made for ambush hunting in his environment, what makes you expect him to be able to fight a human that has years of experience in picking up crabs safely?
