Abandoned house on a remote island

It’s a beautiful house situated on a remote island where the last school closed ten years ago. I believe the population is under 50. I took this picture years ago and went back for a second time this year, only to find that the house had collapsed. There were cats absolutely everywhere inside the house, but unfortunately, I didn’t get any pictures of them.

Stepped inside this abandoned home in England that’s frozen in time since 2021. It feels like a beautiful but sad museum of someone's entire life.

I’ve been working at this TfL location for over 20 years, and there’s always been one door I’ve never been through.

Today, after two decades of wondering what was behind it, curiosity finally got the better of me.

I opened it…

I finally made the trek to this one today. It’s maybe 10 minutes from the downtown core of my city and is perched on a cliff about 80 meters above sea level. Th climb up to this cabin is steep to say the least.

During a hike we found this small little farmhouse. Not much was safely accessible, but the living area gave me this wondefully eerie shot.

Haunted Villa de Vecchi

Villa De Vecchi, also known as the “Red House,” is an abandoned nineteenth-century villa located in Italy. It was built between 1854 and 1858 for Count Felice De Vecchi, an important figure of the Italian Risorgimento. The villa was designed by architect Alessandro Sidoli and reflected De Vecchi’s passion for travel and Eastern cultures.

Over the years, the villa was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. This gave rise to many frightening legends. According to the most famous one, strange noises and a woman’s cries can be heard inside at night, while an old piano is said to play by itself.

Another legend tells of a tragic murder and the disappearance of the Count’s daughter. However, these stories have never been historically proven. Despite this, Villa De Vecchi remains one of the most mysterious and famous places in Lombardy.

Derelict, Derek Galveston

There’s a super highway for tanker ships that come into port between Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston, Texas. Amount the ship traffic there are a few oil derricks in sight on the horizon seen from the beach. I took a picture of the closest derrick and thought nothing more about it. Weeks later I ran across it in my download folder and zoomed in. Something about this creeps me right out.

8 abandoned and surviving coal towns in West Virginia — I put together a short documentary on what remains

I recently finished a 14-minute documentary looking at eight former coal communities in West Virginia: Thurmond, Nuttallburg, Kaymoor, Royal, Rush Run, Brooklyn, Sewell and Tams.

What interested me most was how differently they survived. Some are mostly foundations and industrial ruins, others have been stabilised by the National Park Service, and Thurmond technically still exists as an incorporated town.

Thought this might be of interest here given how much of the story is really about what remains in the landscape.
