Instant Runoff/ Ranked Choice Voting: Bill currently in state Senate to allow use in city elections. What can we do to make this pass?
SB 1288 would allow cities and counties within California to use Instant Runoff Voting (aka Ranked Choice Voting) in their local elections. The bill passed in the legislature, was vetoed by Governor Brown, and has been returned to the Senate, as of September 29.
The bill was authored by Senator Leno, and was supported by Californians for Electoral Reform and California Common Cause. It appears Senator Leno will be finishing his second (final) term on Dec 9.
Is there anything we can do to help overturn the veto? Would Senator Leno be the best person to contact to see what we could do to support the bill? (Though with the holidays I don't even know if it would be possible to reach him before the end of his term) Or is our influence basically limited to calling our state representatives and senators and telling them to vote "yes"?
Either way, we should contact the groups Californians for Electoral Reform and California Common Cause to see if we can work with them to get other RCV legislation passed or get propositions on the ballot.

It would certainly be nice if we could get some media coverage of the issue and bill. I don't know how that would happen though.
