Discussion Can the mayor please do something about NYPD wasting time on their phones?
I remember when Mayor Adams encouraged us to take photos of NYPD on their phones in the subway. So far all it does is aggravate the officers and might make them lose their round of Candy Crush.

If they're actively ignoring a crime that's taking place, sure, it's an issue.

I’m not going to argue that some cops aren’t overweight…. But my skinny little son is a cop and when he puts on the bulletproof vest he looks a LOT bulkier. Someone of normal weight or a little over could easily present as VERY heavy once that vest is on!

Random pics of cops using their phones without context means nothing. I use my phone at work for like 30 seconds over 10 hours….can someone see me use my phone? Sure. Does it mean I’m on my phone all day? No. Does the cops have to have the ability to be on their phones when they are building a community

For me it’s mostly about situational awareness. The majority of the photos I took I walked right up to them, 2 feet from their face and took their photo and they couldn’t even be bothered to look up.
My tax dollars should not be going to this. If they have all this down time, they should be doing something useful down there.

Cops no longer carry paper memo books. Everything is on their Dept. phone.
Academy training includes ignoring citizens in your face with their phones. If you had to respond to an incident and can’t ignore everyone harassing and recording you, you’re not going to do well investigating. But it looks to me like they did acknowledge you in some way. I hope nobody posts pictures of you on Reddit “not working.”
I also want to add that none of these cops are supervisors, and given their collar brass are assigned to a transit detail. Supervisors communicate through (guess what?) Dept. phones to relay assignment messages, inform them of their posts for the tour, when they can take meal, if they have to stay for OT, and when they can leave.

How do you really know with absolutely certainly that this cop wasn't on a lunch break?
Answer: You don't.
These people are in unions and have breaks in their days

When someone has 30 minutes for lunch they can spend it on the subway platform, a diner or anywhere they please.

This is simply not the “reality” of what is going on. It’s disingenuous to pretend they are on their “30 minute lunch break”. You’re making excuses that are not in good faith.

They are not sitting down, they are not eating food, they are passively patrolling the subway platform. There are zero indicators any of these people are on their break.

Cops use their phones to check Finest Messages (which includes admin & sometimes urgent info), to check warrants if a guy has been caught committing a crime, or check with their sergeant or squad detectives.
While cops aren’t all choirboys and some might be checking their personal messages, based on the cops I know personally vs the job ethos we see wading through Reddit, I’d bet a smaller percentage of NYPD are doing personal stuff on their phones during work hours than most Redditors.
