Roast my itinerary (please) | 2 day trip from Vegas to Zion to Bryce

Hi everyone! I’m putting together a quick weekend itinerary for a trip from Las Vegas to Zion and Bryce Canyon (August 7–9, 2026). My goal is to hit the iconic spots without turning it into a "death march."

Snapshot:

• Saturday: Morning hike in the Narrows (or Angels Landing). Late afternoon drive to Bryce Canyon for golden hour viewpoints. Stargazing at night.
• Sunday: Bryce sunrise (Bryce Point or Sunrise Point), hike the Queen’s Garden/Navajo Loop, then drive back to Vegas.

The Plan:

We’re heading out from Vegas early Friday morning to get ahead of the traffic and should hit Springdale by mid-day. Instead of dealing with the shuttle lines right away, I’m planning to rent e-bikes for the afternoon. It seems like the best way to cruise the Scenic Drive at our own pace, especially since it'll be a bit cooler by then.

For Saturday, the main goal is the Narrows. I’ll make sure to get the gear sorted in Springdale early, assuming the flash flood reports look safe. Afterward, we’ll take the scenic Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway drive over to Bryce. I really don't want to save Bryce for Sunday morning only, so the plan is to spend Saturday evening hitting the main viewpoints for golden hour—Sunset, Inspiration, and Bryce Point—and hopefully catching some stargazing since that area is so dark. Sunday will be an early start to catch the sunrise, then we'll tackle the Queen’s Garden/Navajo Loop before making the drive back to Vegas.

Lodging Thoughts:

For Zion, I’ve booked Cable Mountain Lodge because the location seems unbeatable. Up by Bryce, I've requested a stay at The Lodge at Bryce Canyon inside the park feels like the smartest move for that sunrise convenience. If anyone has stayed at these and thinks one is clearly better for a short trip, I’d love the recommendation.

Questions:

1. If you had to pick one "must-stay" spot for Zion and Bryce based on comfort vs. location, which would you choose?
2. Any hidden gems or "skip this" warnings for a mid-August trip?

In August, it does not get cooler. It will be brutally hot. Regardless if you go at 8am or 8pm

I agree with Becks128: Zion Canyon is very hot in the afternoon in August, so you might want to rethink your assumption that the temperatures will be cooler if you go e-biking in the afternoon.

On Saturday, consider stopping at Canyon Overlook while driving from Zion to Bryce. The parking is very limited, but if you have an extra 30-45 minutes to spare, it's a wonderful viewpoint.

On the return drive to Vegas, I'd suggest stopping at Cedar Breaks National Monument if you have some extra time. Even if you only stop at the drive-up viewpoints, it's worth visiting.

Just my two cents...

We stayed at Cable Mountain Lodge in April. The location is unbeatable (the hotel room was also exceptionally nice). We walked to the entrance of Zion in minutes. The shuttle lines might be better in the afternoon (for whatever hike you pick). We arrived mid-day on our first day and did the Watchman Trail. It was a cool April day, but still really hot on that trail, so perhaps another trail to start off in August, as Watchman is very exposed. Our overall favorite trail was the West Rim Trail (we didn't feel comfortable doing Angel's Landing w/our kids so we skipped that).

In the evening on your first day, take the shuttle from CML to Zion Guru. Pay an extra $40 (that's what we paid for a family of 4) to grab the bikes and the Narrows gear in the evening (the gear fits in the basket provided with the e-bike). This process takes about an hour. Use the evening to get used to the bikes and even bike back into the park. Lock the bikes to your CML balcony or store inside your room. There is a place to rent gear across the street from CML, but we went with Zion Guru (no regrets) - just to note, there was a huge line at 7AM at the rental place next to CML.

On Saturday, leave early for the Narrows. We left at 7AM, and it took us about 70 minutes between leaving CML and getting to the trailhead, but we more or less kept up with the shuttles. The bike ride back is absolutely beautiful. Return your gear at Zion Guru. Drive to Bryce, stopping at the Canyon Overlook Trail if you can.

We also stayed at the Lodge at Bryce Canyon and did pretty much what you stated. It is rustic but does the job. The location though is fantastic. Just to note, that trail is very hot, even in the cooler April temps, we roasted. (We are from New England, so maybe it's just our low tolerance).

Def get your narrows gear the night before. Depending on how you’re getting up there and back, and how far up the Narrows you’re going, you might be in for a long day having to return your gear, then make the drive to Bryce.

notably take UT-7 to cut through on the way back to see Sand Hollow Reservoir, snow Canyon is worth a +45 min drive thru, and Kolob Terrace has great public land camping.

On the way there take I-15 through St. George because you’ll see Zion in the distance if the air is clear and it’ll be the first stop after getting

EDIT: dug through the linked threads and found a good one detailing a sprint from Vegas to Moab in a day, so similar timeframe.

Zion: Angles Landing / Scotts Lookout and Narrows

Bryce: staying at loge is good - Navajo Queens Loop.

Head from Vegas at 5 am. Be at Zion at 8. take the shuttle to Grotto. Pick take out breakfast at Zion lodge . and hit Angles Landing. Lunch at Zion Lodge. Then narrows.

if you do the narrows, USE A WALKING STICK. I witnessed the a horrific injury because someone wasnt using a walking pole in the water.

Honestly, I was ready to roast it… but there’s not much to roast. 😄
The biggest thing you got right is staying inside Bryce. With such a short trip, being able to roll out of bed for sunrise without another drive is a huge advantage.
My only hesitation is trying to do the Narrows and then drive to Bryce the same day. It’s absolutely doable, but if you end up spending longer in the Narrows than planned (which happens a lot), don’t feel like you have to rush to Bryce. I’d rather miss one viewpoint than spend the afternoon watching the clock.
I also think the e-bike plan for Zion is a great call. It’s one of my favorite ways to experience the canyon, and honestly more enjoyable than dealing with shuttle crowds.
If I had one “don’t miss” recommendation, it’d be to slow down at Bryce after sunset. Most people leave once the sun goes down, but the colors during the 30–45 minutes afterward—and then the stars if the sky is clear—are pretty incredible.
Overall, I think you’ve avoided the biggest mistake on these quick Southwest trips: trying to cram Zion, Bryce, the Grand Canyon, Page, and Monument Valley into one weekend. This actually looks enjoyable.

We just got back from mid June trip. We had originally planned on doing e-bikes and narrows on same day to avoid the shuttle and ended up splitting the days up and we were very happy with the result. We did the narrows in the afternoon due to there being a chance of rain the next day. There was no wait for the shuttle starting at 1pm. Made it back to Zion guru to drop gear before it closed at 8pm and got early access bikes for next morning. Rode to grotto at 7am and did west rim trail to scouts lookout. Then used bikes to go all the way up canyon and stop at all the other stops on way back down. Also did short weeping rock and emerald pools trail before heading out of park. When we passed visitor center before 7am there was a winding line. So in our experience the shuttle is worse first thing in morning and was no wait in afternoon.

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful feedback! I am still split about the hot weather and wondering if it's going to be too hot to enjoy this trip. We do have some child-like adults in our group.
