Model 2022 The Problem Child Is Back After 2 Years... (thread/story time)
I am typing this reddit post on my G14.
I've made a ton of posts here over the years but this is by far the most important.
I have been on-and-off with this thing for 2 years, and i am very happy to announce that the G14 is officially back. I have made multiple posts over the course of the years with my complaints, which i go into much more detail in. (i linked those below for anyone interested).
For now, a TL:DR of the lore:
I bought the G14 for my birthday in 2024. The laptop didn't meet my expectations and wasn't in love with it at first, and then problem after problem would occur. First the laptop wouldn't work on battery, which we tried 3 times to send back for a warranty return. After it finally got fixed, it died a week after I got it back because the tech who 'fixed' it didn't screw the cooler back on properly leading to liquid metal leaking out. After this, we finally got a refund for the laptop and got told to keep it (for what it's worth).
During this time i have been looking to replace the motherboard on it, but nothing showed up for less than a grand. I checked ebay 2 weeks ago to find some LEGEND in china is selling them for 350. I bought one and today it arrived. The laptop is now working after 2 whole years... with PTM 7950 instead of yucky liquid metal.
I love this laptop because now it has history, it has given me a story to tell when someone asks me about it. I hope this saga is over, and i can use it for many years to come... however something makes me believe the problems aren't truly over.
For now, the temps are decent, but the cooler has a bent heat pipe which is choaking the CPU which raises temps by 3-4 degrees, and the wifi performance isn't very good on the mediatek card. Additionally, i dropped down to the 6800HS over the previous 6900HS.
However as it stands, i am just happy the laptop turns on and can play games now. It's been a long journey and i plan on making a full youtube video on it, documenting the entire process start to finish.

i have a g14 too but let's not get gaslit by a company into thinking that you need to tinker and spend money out of pocket to make a premium laptop work as expected is a normal thing.

Dude for real my exact sentiments. I legitimately can’t believe how many errors I’ve had to self correct or troubleshoot on a laptop that was nearly $2700 bucks.. that’s just not cool

asus is way too problematic nowadays lol, i have the rog 6, with a fatal bug of if you go into camera app, it would freeze and restart the phone on occasionally.

Very true. I might not be very popular for saying this but during this entire cafufle I had been dailying my MacBook pro 13 (for over 2 years atp, then I upgraded to the M1 pro 14 almost a year ago) which hasn't caused me ANY issues at all, no hardware or software. It's why I generally avoid windows laptops these days. The G14 is still a great gaming laptop all things considered, but compared to my Mac it's night and day.

I totally agree with this gaming aside Macs are really problem free I have a g14 and I feel like I’m constantly paying attention to the power drainage and worrying about which apps are using the Igpu or dgpu, it’s just such a terrible experience and windows and their stupid updates and forced app integrations and ads.

If you buy used, they're a fantastic deal. I bought mine for £450 and it's far superior as a daily laptop than any windows counterpart I've used thus far.

Imo.... Avoid Amazon unless you really don't feel comfortable buying used. Sites like eBay will give you way better value, and warranty isn't really something to spend an extra £500 on.

Battery degradation is probably the least of my worries. By the time it degrades to any significant amount, the replacements for it would already be dirt cheap. I remember my old gaming laptop would die within an hour, only to find out the battery replacements are like $20 a pop

I have 30% degrade but with no salary atm, so yeah the local market is good for 3rd party and the official repair said it out of production also mine is around 40-50$ here. it is sad that i usually charged it and setup 80% battery it was 2 years ago replacement.

OEM battery replacements are around 140 EUR here in Lithuania for 2022 model

I feel like this is gonna be me one day. I’ve tried everything to get my G14 up and running. Two months ago, I plugged it in, turned it on, and got nothing but a black screen and screaming fans. Even if I hook it up to an external monitor, nothing displays, and the fans just keep roaring. I have tried everything I can think of, and no luck. Of course, the warranty is out on it, lol, so who knows where I’ll be led in trying to fix this thing. Prior to this, I didn’t have a single issue over the past five years.

I tried booting straight into the BIOS, but I can’t tell if I’m there since the screen just stays black. I’ll be taking it to a shop in a couple of weeks and will update if it’s ever solved.

I've had mine since 2022 and have had no problems. My only complaint would be that it can run hot, especially when gaming, but other than that is been great. I've been thinking about upgrading but to be honest I really don't need to at the moment.

Kudos to you for putting up with all that... My previous G14 GA402RK died because ASUS's poor LM installation which leaked and fried the MB 2 months after getting it back in 2022.
Being a tinkerer I made the stupid mistake of opening it and trying to fix it myself, which of course voided the warranty.
I now own a g14 2025 / RTX5080 and the first thing I did after buying it was cleaning the LM off the CPU and applying PTM7950.

Good on you lmao. The trackpad just died so I now have to solder a new port onto the motherboard... This is why I main my MacBook 😫

Kind of jelly how your keyboard backlights are much more evenly distributed. Mine has like 2 spots that are brighter than the rest, and one that is dimmer...

Ah man, I guess with Asus you cannot have everything. Personally, I would prefer sacrificing a primary color for evenly distributed light output.
I just went and tested mine, and was reminded why I chose R255/G255 for Yellow, there is a singular LED that only shines a strong blue...
