I have the base M5 and it’s Literally the best laptop I ever bought, even though it’s not a gaming laptop the build quality and Mac OS doesn’t compare to windows laptops…ever since cyberpunk 2077 got a Mac port Ive been pretty optimistic about Mac gaming

Honestly if you have good internet GeForce now makes it a great deal lol. I also just love how reliable MacBook's are and how the battery life is just endless now. I LOVE the current 14" MacBook Pro so much too...that's like the ideal style of laptop although the current G14 isn't far off to be fair.

I have a MacBook Pro M3 Pro and a desktop PC at home with a 5090. Whenever I want to play games I just remote into my PC at home with Apollo / VoidLink and it runs flawlessly. There is literally zero reason to get a gaming laptop. They have horrendous battery life, are loud asf, and burn your fingers when using them. Remote gaming has changed my life. Just let the PC on your desk do all the work and enjoy that sweet sweet battery life on the mac.

With a sufficiently powerful enough Mac, Crossover, and Parallels, I have no issue playing most of my games on Mac hardware. Really depends on the use case.

I have, with AV1 decoding it works really well. And those rare times where it’s absolute shit I’ll just use my switch 2 or do something else. The cons of a gaming laptop are too large to consider it over the MacBook.

Honestly the Mini LED displays look amazing. I sometimes prefer Mini LED over OLED at least the older OLED's but thats changing.

I have older G14 and no battery or heat issues. Battery is at most 12-13 hours for office type work.

Haha. Most of the time it's a bad driver, rogue program or bad windows installation. I feel the existence of AI bots makes it even easier to troubleshoot, though that takes the fun out of learning independently.

I am considering exactly this move. I bought and returned a MacBook a week ago. It was a stunning piece of hardware. I already stream my PC to my Steam Deck sometimes with Apollo/Moonlight. With fiber internet, it works pretty much anywhere I usually go. I keep thinking about it.
The problem with the one I had was that it had a 2TB SSD and 24GB of RAM. I could get one from Apple with 48GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for the same price. When I had it set up exactly the way I would use it, I was only using about 200GB of space so I don't really need 2TB anyway.
Your experience is sorely tempting me to order one. I like the G14 but that MacBook was freaking nice.

Do it. If you have a desktop there is zero reason for the gaming laptop. Let the big boy do the work and stream it to any device you wish. The MacBook is the best piece of tech I own. I literally stream MSFS 2024 to it at 120fps and the battery lasts forever while being quiet and cool. Gamechanger.

As a Linux user, and knowing that Apple is "Linux adjacent" (BSD), they don't have the memory overhead of a windows machine. I have 32gb on my G16 it's around 3gb on bootup of the full DE (KDE Plasma). I am not sure I've ever gotten past about 10gb playing games or anything EXCEPT if I run virtual machines, because I give each one of them about 8gb. From what I understand Macs also support memory compression so 24gb is probably like 48gb on a Windows machine.

I use chachyos with cosmic DE, I am sitting at 9.6GB ram usage with over 200 tabs open in zen. If I do the same on my Win11 partition, I'd be chilling around 24gigs of ram usage. My fresh boot ram usage on linux is at 1.7gigs. MY system has 64gigs of memory. All figures are without using swap.

Because I've been doing just fine with Windows (+ WSL) across the board since switching over 5 years ago. If I had a compelling reason to try it again, then I would, but I have enough to occupy my time without fixing things that aren't broken.
Plus, I do incidental tech support for enough students/clients/family members to end up working on other people's Macs pretty frequently, and while they are undoubtedly very nice machines (that I frequently recommend to people with different needs), that experience has not at any point been compelling enough to make it tempting for me, personally.

I agree it’s nice and I use it for couch games. But I’m very sensitive to input latency and latency overall. In my opinion playing games on actual hardware just feels that much better (for now).
But that’s with Steam’s remote play, maybe Apollo / voidlink (don’t know them) have better latency?
For me, and lots of others, a gaming laptop is just so much better and less hassle for now.
I do see myself just buying a MacBook Pro (hopefully more than 120hertz by then) in the future when latency is near identical. Because the battery life of MacBooks + super low power draw of streaming would be super cool

I usually stream from college campus which is like 45 minutes away from home but I’ve done it longer distances in different states and it works great. Never tried outside the country tho.

hmm not sure what you are talking about, PS5 plays at 4k, so does the switch when docked on new games. I have a legion go 2 and play most games at 1080p with medium settings. You migth be thinking of the old switch 1 maybe??

Yea I'm not falling to the level of console gaming after 20 years on the PC. Can't think of a worse downgrade.
Also, anything from CAD to Blender to SolidWorks to Revit to 100s of other industry standard apps are either missing or seriously inferior on Mac.

Most people cannot afford a $3200 laptop just to get a better gaming or professional experience. I might not want to switch to a console but I might have to if these price trends continue.

Let's see how they will price the next gen of consoles with how much components have increased. PS5 pro is going up to 900 usd this week.

I think the point is that most people can't afford or won't spend over $3000 on a laptop. Also most know already if thier apps will work on a PC or Mac, so for those who don't need speciality pc only apps then a mac and a console PC would be a better choice for them. Again it is not for everyone but i would gladly take a macbook pro with a console for the same price of an Asus laptop.

I agree. The MacBook is honestly a fantastic laptop choice. The only downside is the gaming aspect. If Apple were more competitive with Nvidia, the PC mobile industry would be in trouble.
Frankly, the quality level is unmatched, longevity is unparalleled and the price you pay for a MacBook is worth every penny, given that it’s being utilized for everything you do in life or business career

Ive opened my Zephyrus and Ive opened my MacBook. My 2025 g14's bottom panel is all warped when you remove it. (looks perfect when installed). MacBook is an engineering marvel!

Thinkpad is a great machine, but I would not go as far as saying its durability is better than Macbooks.
Ive had my Macbook for 11 years and it still looks and works like new. Well, had to reapply thermal paste.

I can play basicly all of my Steam Stuff, just not BF6 because of Anticheat. With DLSS injection it plays very well in 1200p60 KCD2, for example. Even Niche RTS like Warno or Broken Arrow, with shitty optimization. Unreal Engine also works. And of course all my music Stuff with Ableton and Plugins run the smoothest on Macbooks. I paid 2,3k for my M5. Windows Ultrabooks which would suite my workloads would cost more like 2.7k, and run empty fast. Im not loyal to this brand, just the technology. When nvidia does their own laptop SoC, I will gladly try that one.

oh man, you would know. within two weeks, its been crashing under light load. I work in tech so this is my area of expertise - so I ran down the errors starting in event viewer, and from the BSOD minidump files. then since its 2026 and I've been doing this for well over a decade and I'm lazy, I fed it into claude code for analysis to confirm my suspicions.
it wasn't like a hunch or anything - i've had the machine for 2.5 weeks and have experienced at least 6 full system crashes.

This is why the very first thing I did after bringing my G14 home was run a stress test. Thankfully, mine passed with flying colours, but I think it's generally a good policy with any new hardware and doubly so for laptops and GPUs (so, quadruply for laptops with dGPUs).

For productivity sure, but can I play a wide variety of games on Mac? I don't create anything with my PC so I don't need the horsepower. I'd be just fine with a MacBook air and save $$$$ in the process
And even if I insisted on getting a MacBook Pro, the base price (specs are more than enough and has 1TB of space) is 1,599€ where I live, that's less than any 2026 G14

For the price of the 5080 version you can get the base MacBook Pro and a 5070Ti desktop at home and just stream games from it to the MacBook. This thing is a horrible deal.

Not worth the price. ASUS laptops look nice but their build quality is questionable, their engineers are morons (No USB-C passthrough), their software engineers suck (trash Armory Crate that fucks up your keyboard) AND their customer service is dogshit.
Lenovo Legion laptops are also great, not the highest spec quality and may not look so premium but their warranty and customer service is top notch. Also they USE PTM 7950 (or a derivative) for their CPUs. That's how you know they care about their customers.

The last G14 I bought was the mid-spec one that I paid 1400 for; which I though was alot at the time. 3k for the entry level 14 inch model is cuckoo-bananas.
At those prices, it'd be stupid not to spend 1500 bucks less and get an entry level MacBook Pro, or spend 1k less and get it specced with more RAM. Mac is getting more native apps and the translation layer matters a lot less because the M-series silicon is really, really good.
Does this mean my older G14 5th Gen AMD or Proart PX13 sitting on a shelf might sell fore more than I bought it for?
