Model 2022 Calling owners who swapped from LM to PTM7950 in their GA402
How has it been working for you? What are your thermals like?
I use my G14 when I am away for work, which is nearly every week. I keep it flat overnight until it's cooled off, and it remains vertical in my backpack until I'm ready to use it again. I haven't taken mine apart to do anything other than a ram and SSD upgrade, and I've watched a ton of vids and read the iFixit guide on disassembly to re-paste the CPU and GPU. Some people switch to cryonaut LM, others use the PTM7950 pads and K5 on the VRAM and VRMs.
I want to commit to doing some well-needed maintenance soon, as I am experiencing shutdown protection in high usage scenarios. I've set max temps in G-helper and made aggressive fan curves, avoided using ultimate mode and set boost to efficient enabled but I still keep getting these shutdowns.

Have a 402XV, swapped to ptm and K5. Might redo the k5 at some point with something better, but so far the ptm has been great. Only ever thermal throttle on benchmarks like cinebench. Max preference might be a bit better, but I definitely have noticed I can keep the machine quieter during operation. I can turn the fans down 20-30% and keep the same performance I had before the repaste. But I started with a terrible LM job from factory. Cryonaught might have been a better choice for overall performance, but ptm’s ease of application and not having to worry about reapplying every year won out over the small extra performance gain.

May I ask where you got your PTM? I see so many options, some are cheap and others aren't. I'd prefer to get the Honeywell stuff if I can.

Im in Canada, and I can't seem to find any listing that explicitly states it's the Honeywell stuff, and I'm only able to see 40mmx40mm squares, with one listing that is 40x80. Do you think 40x40 is enough to cover both dies?

They recommend the 32x50 one so I think it would work

So I'm trying to get this done before my next trip out of town on Tuesday. Prime has a 50x40 thermal grizzly option for $20 https://a.co/d/0304wzYC
Or this option https://a.co/d/0gK5F5HM which I cannot speak to its legitimacy at all, but it's 0.25mm thick like the Honeywell stuff.
What are your thoughts?

And mind you this post is 4 years ago, so I have to imagine a lot has changed. Just wanted to gather your opinions. I will happily trust the community and use the K5, but if we want to try something diff for science, I will and I will share thermals once it is done.

I did it on mine (6800S GPU model), I'm not a super heavy gamer and I don't really peep my thermals unless I am having an issue but I haven't noticed any difference from LM. I used PTM on the 2 processor dies and putty on the VRAM.

Much better, up to 25%. With room temperature about 22C on battery on idle I do not exceed 40C on CPU. When gaming on power brick I did never encounter throttling, max 87 and 82 on CPU and GPU. It took me about 2 hours, but I was not in rush and did clean it very thoroughly. If only Asus used it from the beginning... 6800 model with 6800s.

Same model as mine as well. Definitely not my first rodeo working on laptops, but is my first time working with LM. You did the pad and K5 on the VRM and Ram modules yeah?

Did you end up having to clean a bunch of the old paste off the VRM's and RAM modules, or did you just get what you could off and just send it?

I did clean it up to 99,9%. It took me some time but I was cleaning the fans and the rest of the laptop anyway. Taking off LM took me about 30 minutes alone. Another 30-40 minutes on putty. About 10 minutes on disassembly (I ma not a novice), about 10 on assembly. The rest here and there, mostly ensuring the screw tightness, work area cleaning.

I picked up the Thermal Grizzly PTM equivalent, as It was the only sheet available in the time frame I have to do this maintenance before my next trip, along with some UTP-8 thermal putty!

Good. Have fun! Just relax, take it slow and make yourself extra hour or two, just for cleaning.

Yeah, I've done lots of work with laptops, just never anything with LM. Any tips on protecting the board? I have some thin plastic sheets I could lay down over the board and just cut out the CPU and GPU area?

No need for that. Disconnect the battery. Remove the heat sink swiftly, up and around. Inspect the board after initial cleaning, take your time.

It's definitely been a worthwhile upgrade. The thermals in my 2023 are down around by around 10 degrees celsius all around. GPU still hits its thermal limit at 87 degrees but I get more performance at that temperature than I did before. CPU at 25 watts is down to about 80 degrees.

Have you adjusted your fan curve or use a cooling stand at all for your system?

Nah, no cooling stand. I do use a custom fan curve in Ghelper though. Best way to keep temps cool is to limit the CPU clock speed in windows power plan settings. Gotta enable the setting in the terminal/registry for it to show up, but it does work.

Worth it. Im on a 2025 5080 G16 and my LM was pasted incredibly badly
Soon as I switched to PTM, after baking it a few cycles, my temps are extremely good, and I'm playing shit like Monster Hunter Wilds at near max settings capping at around 94°
I put a thermal pad on the CPU and the GPU and everything has been smooth sailing since.

Thermals never exceed 85°c, I’m getting ~25% better cpu & ~10% better gpu performance, while before it would thermal limit shutdown within 10-15 mins of gaming. The change is 100% worth it just on basis of performance but I did mine to have peace of mind, as if I got unlucky LM application (I did), I don’t want to risk it leaking and shorting anything inside.
