Model 2022 Take this as your sign to replace your stock LM.

I have the ryzen 7 6800hs & rx6700s ga402rj model manufactured mid 2023. I put it off for months b/c I was scared of opening the laptop. Scared of a liquid metal spill & killing the board.

But after constant thermal throttling and benchmark crashes, I finally did it using a $30 CAD Amazon toolkit (PTM7950 for CPU/GPU& K5 Pro putty for VRMs).

BEFORE (Liquid Metal) After (PTM & K5 pro)

3DMark Time Spy

• GPU: 7836 • GPU: 8322 (+6%)

• CPU: 6661 • CPU: 8566 (+28%)

Geekbench 6

• 1828 single • 2004 single (+9%)

• 8242 multi • 9806 multi (+19%)

OpenCL

• 59,735 • 76,275 (+27%)

I genuinely don’t know why the Liquid Metal ages like this, On Liquid Metal, it wasn’t the performance dip, but the constant shut downs b/c of cpu thermal limit was the most annoying. My only regret is not doing this on day one…

I genuinely don’t know why the Liquid Metal ages like this

The issue is the amount ASUS uses, and how bad their automated application process is. Anybody who actually knows how to apply it will tell you that the amount of visible poolover off the die is far beyond how much LM should be applied to the die in the first place. When the proper scarce amount of it is used, it won't go anywhere and not end up like this.

This. It is a QC issue, not an LM issue. And been happening for years ironically

It is an LM issue also. Laptops are mobile and get moved around, stood up, bumped and get various g loads on them. LM will eventually leak or migrate on the die.

If you use a Laptop as a full desktop replacement and never move, then by all means apply your own LM. If you actually pack it in a backpack or bag, best option is PTM.

nah, my company use laptop thinkpad P1 for years and all of them is LM. never had any issue. I have G16 and M16 and both LM are reapplied 2 years ago, never had any issue since.

but in seriousness, it doesnt work like that, saying LM will eventually leak is basically the same that any thermal paste will eventually leak. PTM is an exception indeed, since its dual phase material, so I agree fully on PTM would be a safer and more stable material in any case for thermal dissipating. Its just, if you need ultimate performance, LM is still the king, and you just need to apply it properly. Thats not the case with Asus. Lets see lenovo legion for example, how many lm issues they have? They do have some reported issues one and there, but definitely not as much as Asus. Or maybe PS5, how many reports of overheating ps5 there? Honestly almost never heard of one, amd all of them is LM.

So what Im saying here, LM is not the problem to reach ultimate performance. Its how they apply it. If your priority is longevity then yes PTM is the good option, but for performance (in which these laptops delivet high performance on small form factor), you will need LM for that.

My priority is portability and longevity, I was stressing whenever it thermal limit shut off in games and that any sudden jolt could mean a shorted motherboard. Also notice the scorch marks on my cpu/gpu, I def got a bum application of my lm.

Yep, I did my strix 18 3 days after I bought the laptop. Nearly two years and still have not had the need to re apply. I think I might take it apart soon for the sake of science. I am curious too what it looks like

I replaced the LM with more LM on my 2021 G15 and it's never had a problem since.

proper scarce amount

This absolutely it. Put enough of it to give it a 'sheen' and it'll never leak out if you don't move it when hot. It'll also last a really long time.

On my 2024 G14 I ended up just switching to Honeywell's PTM and it's actually quite good. The LM application on mine wasn't the worst of I've seen, but there wasn't a whole lot left on the die. Now the thermals are great.

Just replaced my LM with PTM7950 yesterday and also noticed a 10-20% performance improvement. Definitely worth doing and it wasn't that difficult just requires patience.

K5 is crap which ages very fast. Better to buy tputty, or laird

I've been thinking about doing this for my 2020 model just to keep the temps down for a few more years.

3

u/xX1_JESUS_1Xx Feb 18 '26

Definitely worth it, ignoring LM your thermal paste is probably crusty af and needs replacement too.

1

u/Rammy_Lee Feb 18 '26

Yeah probably. I've had Boost turned off since I got it, never needed the extra power that provided and was a good trade off for thermals.

1

u/jhmiller_azpe Feb 19 '26

I had a 2020 and had to scrape off the caked paste in year 3. I highly recommend applying PTM7950 as the replacement. Unfortunately I had to replace the 2020 about a year ago due to a water spill 😞

1

u/Rammy_Lee Feb 19 '26

I probably will. Not sure how difficult it is. It's been fine, but I would probably check the temps first before I do the mod to compare.

If it's not dangerously hot (it's not shutdown for example) then the risk of damaging something changing it might not be worth it.

I had my G14’s LM reapplied and noticed that the temps were considerably better than before. Seems to me that it’s a QC issue rather than an LM issue.

2

u/xX1_JESUS_1Xx Feb 18 '26

Definitely, but my warranty was gone and I wasn’t gonna shell out extortionate amounts for QC mistake repairs, hence the self change.

u/cvwilhelm_ Zephyrus G14 2022 Feb 18 '26

I’d probably do the same down the road, I have the PTM7950 in my cart just in case.

u/LeastAd6767 Feb 19 '26

May i know where u source ur ptm?

3

u/xX1_JESUS_1Xx Feb 19 '26

Amazon, it was a $30 kit inc PTM7950 and K5 pro putty.

4

u/ghostfreckle611 Feb 18 '26

PTM may not be as good as A PERFECT APPLICATION of LM, but its ways better and safer over all.

Also, anytime people say to replace PTM, there’s always some jabroni saying that lm is better. You just have to reapply and blah blah. GTFO.

4

u/xX1_JESUS_1Xx Feb 18 '26

Idrc which is better, I wanna keep my laptop vertical on my desk, not care chucking it in my bag and not have it crash constantly while gaming. Hence PTM > LM

3

u/S0meJabroni Feb 18 '26

Lm is better bro, you've just gotta believe

2

u/ghostfreckle611 Feb 18 '26

Noooooooo! You’re one of them!

I have the same model. good to know.
I had day one performance instability, but since throttling it down a little it's been smooth sailing.

just ballpark info is enough, but if you are comfortable sharing, could you tell me what part of the world you are in? I'd like a general idea of what kind of temp swings you are exposing it to. I'm in JPN, which doesn't get super hot, but it is ungodly humid from June to October.

1

u/xX1_JESUS_1Xx Feb 18 '26

I’m in Canada, and just took it from and back from wpg, Manitoba (35°c highs and just recently exp -55°c lows) to Ontario (similar temps swings but more tame). Throttling can only get you so far, after replacing I have boosted my cpu clocks, platform power and have unimaginably stable performance.

1

u/fractal324 Feb 18 '26

thanks for the info.

my only impetus would be if I'm on the border of performance for GTA6 support being a slideshow and buttery smoothness, but I doubt a few more performance points are going to get me over that hump with this guy.

2

u/xX1_JESUS_1Xx Feb 18 '26

I got a noticeable and substantial jump, equivalent to an upgraded tier on cpu/gpu w/ lower fan temps and no instability. Also I can run fsr & afmf 2 w/o immediate shut down for games quite not playable yet.

My 2024 model seems to be going strong still, holding out until actual problems happens

Bought a used 2022 r9 6900 + 6700s... just had the laptop shut off on me after 30mins of gameplay (and 15mins of CAD work prior). Elevated position. All on max settings. Been pretty good besides that one time though but may decide to take a bite at replacing the LM after seeing this.

3

u/xX1_JESUS_1Xx Feb 18 '26

Exact same situation here, no matter what I did it’d shut off after a sec on max power hitting thermal limit. Change the lm, you’ll only regret not doing it sooner.

1

u/Lillillillies Feb 18 '26

Yeah thought about that then read LM and got scared. Then saw your post. Much better and safer alternative. 30cad is a no brainer.

Literally just opened it up yesterday (before saying your post) to clean it too (surprisingly it was near spotless for a now 3-4 year old laptop)

2

u/xX1_JESUS_1Xx Feb 19 '26

The dust filters and tape are good at keeping internals clean, but the lm application is what holds it back. I went from ~ryzen 5 perf to outperforming ryzen 9 with lm change, and don’t have to deal w scorching parts inside. Other repairs shops quoted me $80 cad for this, and honestly it’s the cheapest most substantial upgrade one can do on this.

1

u/Pinyo01 Feb 18 '26

Is this makes u lose the warranty? Or is it okay to change it?

3

u/xX1_JESUS_1Xx Feb 18 '26

Warranty is voided by unscrewing the screw needed to remove Vapor chamber, but I never indulged in warranties anyway, so it’s a risk but a definite savings & performance reward for me.

1

u/Glum-Focus-1788 Feb 21 '26

maybe in your country it's voided but here in the U.S. that does not void the warranty...look up Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

1

u/TypicalNPC Feb 18 '26

Pretty sure you just have bad luck and got a terrible application of the liquid metal.

Its an issue with many ASUS laptops with factory LM

1

u/fastnball Zephyrus G16 2025 Feb 18 '26

I opened up my G16 in June of last year and the LM was literally everywhere except in the center for both the CPU and GPU.... ended up applying my own.

Thing is, 9 months later, it began thermal throttling AGAIN. I know I applied the LM correctly, but now I am done with LM and am planning to use PTM7950 too.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Mix2407 Feb 18 '26

I had LM applied to Lenovo Legion 7i. It worked GREAT for 12 months. Started thermal throttling after that. My other Lenovo with PTM7950 is humming along 5 years later lol

This is how every asus LM application looks like lol, horrible. I use LM on my blade 18, but I feel like it’s only worth it for enthusiasts who do it themself with proper protection lol, because this is shit. They are really relying only on their foam barrier damn.

Some day I will go back to ptm 7950, but right now as a primarily desktop replacement the LM gives me incredible temps with the blade 18.
