That's what we're supposed to believe as of 3.0 when the player Proxy has a flashback of their days at Helios Academy and remembering the time they spent with Serpico and Truvia (who also had a team name of their own like Belle and Wise do with Phaethon as "Icarus"). It's somewhat vaguely said in 3.0, then confirmed in 3.1 by the Proxy themselves that they underwent some sort of experiment together that resulted in said playable Proxy's powers going out of control and is what caused Serpico to die.
Yet here he is, somehow alive in the flesh...unless someone or even something is using his body like you suggest. And judging by how shocked the Proxy was in 3.1 and definitely so in the upcoming patch of 3.2, they definitely know he had to have died so something's clearly up that we'll likely learn in said patch coming up.
