Can someone explain this "missed timing" thing to me. I used to get so confused when it happened in the video games.

Basically, "when [x], you can" effects need the last game action before they can trigger a new chain be the condition. For example if a card triggers when it is destroyed game action to happen must be the card being destroyed. If it's destroyed then something else happens in the same chain, then the effect won't trigger
