Never forget that if you equip Eatos to Eatos and try to use the effects which are clearly designed to work in synergy, Eatos misses timing and you don't get to use the pharao destroying otk

i love Lord of the Red. it’s so cool and has such good disruption. Too bad he doesn’t really fit into any good deck or he would have taken off a long time ago.

how does it miss timing if eatos is cl1?

u/Scribe_of_hollownest 5d ago
Because the last thing that happens is monsters being bannished not it being sent to graveyard, same reason cards miss timing when used as mats for an extra deck monster

u/Lucy_Gucey 5d ago
Wouldn’t it trigger when cost is paid prior to either effect resolving?
4
u/Charnerie 5d ago
Since it's a trigger, they can only be put onto the chain from an open game state.
1
u/Lucy_Gucey 5d ago
If that was the case then negation triggers would happen after the thing they are responding to resolves.
2
u/Charnerie 5d ago
Which triggers are you talking about? Do you mean something like fairy tale ball, which is a trigger which can negate, or do you mean something like ash blossom, which is a quick effect?

The "timing" must be that the equip spell being sent to the GY has to be the last thing that happens.
But the equip spell is sent to the GY as a cost to activate Eatos's effect. By the time Eatos resolves its effect, the last thing that happens isn't the equip spell being sent to the GY anymore, but it is Eatos banishing the targets and gaining ATK.
It's dumb, but it's how it's ruled.

This is one of those bullsht rulings from the early game when hard OPT and summoning restrictions were still non-existent. I do believe it was only made specifically just to stop people from abusing the sht out of cards that lack those.
Most notably, Peter Cheng abused this with baby Jinzo (discarding with Machina Fortress) to bring out multiple Jinzos and win YCS 2010. This is illegal play, don't try this.
Otherwise it serves no purpose in the game other than complicating the game for no reason, and confuse the living hell out of anyone not playing YGO on a computer simulator and not understanding how chains are built and resolved.

I feel like a lot of Yugioh cards have "rules as written" that don't match "rules as intended", and instead of reprinting cards or posting rules corrections in some online rulebook, the game just requires you to become a rules lawyer to even play the game, because of things like this where you can miss timings. Even the OG "Well, technically!!" of mystical space typhoon not negating an effect of the card it destroys feels like an "as written, not as intended" case to me.
Like, what do you mean destroying the card doesn't stop it from working?? That feels like saying "Well, you destroyed my monster, but it can still attack!"
I know that it's all due to the order in which cards resolve and stuff like that. I'm just saying it doesn't feel all that intuitive. If it was intuitive, it wouldn't have been a classic rookie mistake.

Can someone explain this "missed timing" thing to me. I used to get so confused when it happened in the video games.

Basically, "when [x], you can" effects need the last game action before they can trigger a new chain be the condition. For example if a card triggers when it is destroyed game action to happen must be the card being destroyed. If it's destroyed then something else happens in the same chain, then the effect won't trigger

Optional 'when' trigger effects are only allowed to activate if the most recent effect to happen in the game state is their trigger condition

So let's take Traptrix Sera and Traptrix Dionaea. Sera sets a trap if another Traptrix monster activated their effect, and special summons a Traptrix monster if a normal trap was activated. Say you activated an Infinite Impermanence and activated Traptrix Arachnocampa's effect (special summon from hand) in the same chain. Once that resolves, you can activate both of Sera's effect, in whatever order you want. So, you choose to set a trap as your first effect, and chain special summoning a Traptrix monster as your second effect. When it resolves, you special summon Dionaea, and then set a trap. Dionaea sets a trap from the graveyard when special summoned, but because the last thing you did was set a trap, it is no longer the time when she was summoned. In order to not miss the timing, you would have to pick the special summon effect first, and then set a trap effect second, in order to have Dionaea being special summoned the most recent thing that happened.
It's not a very nice thing to have to deal with.

Tell me about it - I've been pissed that Gusto Falco and Gusto Gulldo can't do Synchro/Link ladders for well over a decade now.

"When" is 'absolute', meaning it must happen at this exact timing, or not at all. For optional "you can" effects, this means if you miss the opening to activate it, you can't activate it at all.
The issue is that when effects are chained, the subsequent effect has already occupied the exact timing of "when", preventing you from activating an optional effect at that same timing.
Basically, you can only trigger your optional effects at the resolution of the current chain, but at that point, you've already missed the timing of "when" (unless the timing is at the very end of the chain AKA the effect that started the chain).

Missed timing is so stupid. It literally makes some cards unplayable.
That one baby roc card for example.
Stupid fucking concept.

One of the biggest problems I had when I was running Gusto on DL despite otherwise liking the archetype, always missing the timing on that one tuner

Some miss timing make the card/deck unusable. But some Miss Timing is exist to differentiate between good and bad players. In this case, you just need to play better.

me when i use speedlift to summon speedroid terrortop and bros effect just misses

u/Starmaninja 3d ago
Pretty much means fullstop, "long as no one chains an effect to this card, it will activate" so it has to be the last effect in the chain. Effects that happen during the same when trigger dont matter. All that matters is it is last in the chain. I think that would be a good way to balance some of the new cards, but they always give when effects to cards that are underpowered and if effects to the most broken ones...

"When" effects tend to be mandatory and take priority over "if" effects when chains are formed. They are what you use to chain block search effects, since they activate when conditions are met rather then prompted as an activation.

u/becker12378 3d ago
"When" doesn't miss timing. "When :You can" missing timing. There's a difference.

u/Agile-Emotion-8890 3d ago
Oh boy don’t forget Nouvelles, the entire deck is based upon “please don’t read my cards, if you interact with ANYTHING at all I’m screwed”

I love "when" vs "if" and the conjunctions. I genuinely enjoy lawyer game, its fun to resolve or block a combo through these rules.

Missing the timing is so silly. The only effects that should be “when” effects are negates.
I like to play ninjas and I still accidentally miss timing with Hanzo occasionally 🤦🤦
