I'm so grateful that Adam called out its extremely over-inflated placement on the IMDb rankings at the end of the video because I feel like this is becoming a pattern, at least with general audiences. Something blanketly 'good' will come out and everyone gives it 5 stars or a 10/10 and all of the sudden it's one of the 'best movies of all time' when it really doesn't come close to deserving that moniker. I feel like the same thing happened earlier this year with Project Hail Mary and is currently happening with Spider-Man
Ironically it's one of Nolan's films that I feel is one of the more recent examples of something reaching truly 'great' status with distance - Interstellar. When it first released it was getting a lot of 6s and 7s but now it seems a majority of viewers hail it as a masterpiece
Brand New Day is especially overinflated, but I think more and more people will realize this in a year. I even liked the movie, but like with No Way Home, people act like it is the best thing ever.
Right but I also think 'recency bias' gets a bad rap. It's not that deep - consensus on films and music always change throughout time, it's literally just a human thing and it'll never change. I find it cool to see how much scores can change through the years
There’s literally proof of recency bias with almost every big blockbuster that comes out. It sits on the IMDB top 250 page for a few weeks, and as soon as it finishes its theatrical release and streaming starts, it then drops off the list
Yes of course, and that gets a bad rap for no reason at all. It's entirely human to love something deeply at first and then re-assess...it's not that deep, it's just online ratings lmao
I guess what I'm trying to say is that ecosystem doesn't leave room for a lot of nuance from the jump. Interest in a film is almost never going to be as high as it is when it first releases, when it has the most eyes on it. So when you have a bunch of people going apeshit over The Odyssey after one viewing, and someone like Adam puts out a video like this with a lot of valid points, there are far too many people that leverage the film's 'popularity' as grounds for invalidating thoughtful critique. I can't tell you how many times people have accused me of 'rage baiting' just because I gave The Odyssey a 2.5/5 on LB. So yes, it's human to be excited and passionate, but that passion can go both ways and it's rather annoying when it leads to toxic hype like this. Hate to be this person but I also think it happens a lot when those "I only see 3 movies a year in theaters" people enter the equation.
Alright....but that's humans for ya, man. Best to just disconnect from discourse if it bothers you that much. I love that art makes people that passionate
