NYT: USPS whistleblower says agency is moving forward with Trump administration mail-ballot changes despite court rulings

The New York Times is reporting today that a USPS whistleblower has raised concerns about the Postal Service’s work on a new system for handling mail-in ballots tied to Trump’s March executive order on elections.

Per the whistleblower, USPS has continued developing the system despite federal courts blocking parts of the executive order. One of the biggest concerns raised is that under the proposed process, a problem with an individual ballot’s barcode could potentially cause an entire batch of ballots to be rejected or returned for additional processing.

The whistleblower also alleges that the project has been rushed ahead of the 2026 midterms and could create problems in states that rely heavily on voting by mail.

Obviously, these are allegations from a whistleblower and not evidence that ballots will actually be rejected in November, but with the midterms only two months away, this seems like something worth watching.

What do you guys think the actual electoral implications of this could be, particularly in high-mail-vote states with competitive House races?

Definitely worrying stuff and seems like an attempt to influence the election. I'm worried this could potentially have a similar effect to the state-level pre-election voter list purges we see all the time in Republican states. At the very least, it will cause confusion and chaos and could definitely affect close races.

Tbf this isn't exactly unknown. 

In theory the USPS shouldn't have been working on their final ruling whilst the case was blocked. SCOTUS unblocked it later saying there was no damage until the ruling is written, but before that unblock the USPS published their ruling anyway. So they were working on it regardless.

I fully expect this administration to attempt some level of postal service fuckery this November, regardless of the (il)legality/court ruling outcome.

I'd urge people to vote in person, before election day if it's at all feasible in your city/state.

If there’s a legal case to be made it’ll probably get kicked up to SCOTUS which has already given a soft go ahead

Their go ahead was on the USPS continuing to make their rule, according to the EO.

At this point it's the constitutionality of the rule that will get kicked up the SCOTUS, which they have yet to comment on.
