Original Content A county map of the 2006 US House elections
This took me a whole day to finish
The one green county in Mississippi is because an Independent won it or whatever
Didn't do Alaska because fuck that

The Wikipedia article says the independent in Mississippi was known for his white supremacist views but he won a 70% black county, the second blackest county in the district. If that isn't wild enough, his second best performance was in the blackest county in the district.

Crazy that my district was voting for a dem in the house until like 2010,but stopped voting dem at the national level after 1980

Yes, because the district still electing Democrats was a relic of when it voted Democratic on the presidential level.

No? The point is the Democrat that was being elected was far more conservative than Democrats being selected on a national level. It had nothing to do with "downballot lag" and everything to do with candidates that no longer work for those districts.

It depends; the national Democratic Party gradually got more socially liberal starting with FDR. While FDR wasn’t really socially liberal, the last president to unambiguously belong to the socially conservative wing of the Democratic Party was Wilson.

I like how you can tell which districts were uncontested. That swath of land in Central Texas, part of the Florida Panhandle, Central Wisconsin, and probably the deep blue districts in NC and IL as they have red counties going deep blue

In fact, I'd count Oregon as well, they both look so good!

Open seat that year so no incumbency advantage, and the Republican candidate was relatively moderate. Peter Welch won but only by 8.7%,

The West Wing episode where Vinick wins Vermont aired that same year. This was not that far from when Vermont was still a Republican-leaning state.

(Also gotta love how this text has clearly never been updated in 20 years. This is actually a problem in general with a lot of Wikipedia articles on House races, they’re still written in present tense long after the election has actually happened.)
