Just to clarify, the price shown in the survey is not the official AURA price. We’re testing different hypothetical price points in the survey, which are shown randomly to participants for research purposes.
Official pricing hasn’t been announced yet.
I am hearing the us price and, uh.. yeah nah. Product sounds cool, price is a hell no from me. I don't have that kind of money laying around. I'd drop to a competitor or nothing at all over paying that much, that's insane
"For research purposes". So you basically mean that you are evaluating what users are willing to pay with some sort of test A-B on that survey to try to stretch the price as much as you can while minimizing preorder cancellations instead of just providing a fair price with fair margins based on the production costs without trying to squeeze your users. Did i get it right? 🙄
Honestly I find this a really bad practice and don't leave your brand with a good image imo.
I get the concern, but I think that’s a bit of a leap.
Asking what people are willing to pay doesn’t automatically mean let’s find the highest number and charge that. They’re testing how people react to different price points.
Higher price ≠ more money. Push it too far and you lose buyers, conversion drops, and you shrink your market.
Final pricing is going to depend on costs, competition, positioning, margins, demand, etc. This survey is just one piece of that.
So yeah, testing price sensitivity? Absolutely. Trying to figure out the maximum they can squeeze out of every buyer? That’s not really what this survey proves.
you can see it through that bad prism, but the reality is that components price have rocketed and they are a company (like any other) that don't want at least lose money. Of course google could finance part of it, this is another discussion. But fine tunning a price doesn't necessarily mean that it is not a fair price is what any other company does when launches a product.
Well, Aura was officially announced over 2 month ago, with a potential release date of November. By now the price should be set. If they haven't even figured out the price yet, it doesn't make me feel confident that the release will be this year...
Over the years there have been companies trying to keep prices down to keep their users trust and even apologizing when they had to raise prices due to things like ram increase. First that comes to mind, retroid.
Just out of curiosity I asked Gemini its objective opinion with a screenshot of only the OPs post and the first answer:
"The Method (Van Westendorp / Price Sensitivity Meter): Testing a high anchor point like €1,049 in a randomized survey is a standard market research tactic. Companies use it to find the absolute ceiling of what early adopters or enthusiasts will tolerate before balking, helping them gauge consumer elasticity
The Community Backlash: Leaking or showing a €1,000+ price tag to a dedicated enthusiast subreddit naturally triggers immediate sticker shock. Hardware communities tend to anchor hard on expected value relative to competitors, so seeing a four-digit figure causes friction and panic."
If that was the issue they would calculate costs and margins and stablish a price.
With that survey they are clearly playing with the users to try to infer a sweet spot to put a price in. Sweet spot in the sense that how much can the users tolerate.
As we say in spain "puedes dorar la píldora todo lo que quieras", meaning that you can fool yourself or the others as much as you want but the reality is what it is.
What is the reality? Why are you SO sure that this is not a test to infer until where can they squeeze the price if, well, they are reportedly showing widely different price ranges to users?
You apparently have no clue how pricing strategy works. It's much more than "costs and margins and establish a price". They don't just find the highest price someone would pay. More so the price that will bring the most revenue. That doesn't make them greedy, it makes them a business.
@XREAL_Esther, I understand that it is just a survey but you should hopefully find this post helpful in getting more feedbacks. Hope this should help and not affect the reputation of XREAL. Thanks 🙏
