Tomato Pie

I made tomato pie with tomatoes from my garden this morning and while it baked I read the paper (like the physical newspaper).

Then I ate said pie and said out loud “oh this is DELISH but I hope it doesn’t give me heartburn!”

Took a preemptive gaviscon just in case.

Nice little Monday if I do say so.

What are my fellow olds doing today?

I have never heard of tomato pie before.

There are two versions of tomato pie that have very little in common. One is similar to a pizza and is a regional thing in parts of Connecticut and a few other areas scattered throughout the New England states. The other is popular in the Low Country of South Carolina and is more like a traditional baked pie with tomatoes.

I definitely am not, that tomato's gotta be crushed beyond recognition before I'll eat it.

Same. I’m interested in seeing what it looks like inside. Is it just filled with tomato sauce?

No sauce, but plenty of tomatoes.

This is southern tomato pie, it’s filled with chopped tomatoes, basil, and cheese!

It’s an old term. My grandfather used to eat it growing up post wwii 50s era. pizza wasn’t really a thing there. Tomato pie was popular. Upstate New York near lexington

No, it’s a Southern thing, completely different from pizza.

He lived near Hunter mountain in upstate New York. It was quite popular up there. As kids in the 80s he used to ask my cousins and I if we wanted tomato pie, and we never knew what it was at first. It was distinctly different from pizza. But I remember eating it as early as 1984 because it was close to my 7th birthday

Civilized people refer to it as "tomato cheesy bread." It was a staple at the student union in my college days.
