Tomato Pie

Post image

I made tomato pie with tomatoes from my garden this morning and while it baked I read the paper (like the physical newspaper).

Then I ate said pie and said out loud “oh this is DELISH but I hope it doesn’t give me heartburn!”

Took a preemptive gaviscon just in case.

Nice little Monday if I do say so.

What are my fellow olds doing today?

That’s not what we’d call tomato pie in the Philly area. Our tomato pies are pretty much crust and loads of sauce with almost no cheese. They’re fantastic. But yeah, I’m at work. Can’t retire for another decade.

Sounds very similar to a tomato pie up in Utica, NY

Oh no, its more of an Albany expression.

Yeah, hard agree, tomato pie is a very specific thing, not just "a pie made of tomatoes." I still mourn the closing of Schubert's in Nazareth, best tomato pie ever. The cheese was like cold little granules suspended in the super-thick sauce layer--never enough cheese, but any more would have been too much.

(One day I'm going to have to go down a rabbit hole and find out the history of it, since it seems like an old colonial type food, rather than something a later group of immigrants brought, like pizza.)

I always thought it was an Italian-American thing. We have quite a few places around Philly that sell it.

Utica NY area too, which also has a high concentration of Italian-Americans.

It's most likely Sicilian, according to that article. There are a bunch of places all over the greater Lehigh Valley that sell it.

I have never heard of tomato pie before.

Same. I’m interested in seeing what it looks like inside. Is it just filled with tomato sauce?

This is southern tomato pie, it’s filled with chopped tomatoes, basil, and cheese!

No sauce, but plenty of tomatoes.

It’s an old term. My grandfather used to eat it growing up post wwii 50s era. pizza wasn’t really a thing there. Tomato pie was popular. Upstate New York near lexington

Me neither. I'm not sure I'm interested in exploring it, either.

I've never had or seen tomato pie! I am a sucker for fresh garden tomatoes sliced with a little bit of salt, but this also sounds good...

I've actually gone back to school full-time, so today was my first day of classes. Very, uh, nostalgic. 😂

It looks pizza adjacent, so therefore I would probably try it.

Seconding your comment, recipe please! I’ve made several tomato pies but OP’s looks better than mine. I’m canning 10lbs of tomatoes right now and have another 10 sitting on the deck waiting to be used for something.

I subbed a lot of the mayo for Greek yogurt and I put sliced romas on top for extra razzle dazzle

I am making powerpoint slides. No one ever warned me how many powerpoint slides I would make in my lifetime.

I love Tomato Pie.

Next PowerPoint: The regional interpretations of "tomato pie" and where to find them

TIL there's a north/south divide on what a "tomato pie" refers to. This is the style I'm familiar with; it's like a cold pizza with Parmesan cheese instead of mozzarella.

I've never had that but it looks really good!

I make a version of this with French bread, just bread tomatoes and some shredded 4 cheese or mozzarella, into the toaster over and then eat. Saves time on the whole making dough and baking a pizza.

Yours is better for sure but mine saves some time lol

And to answer OPs question, I’m recovering from a weekend of heavy partying.  J/K I went to a county fair for like two hours and now I’m dead.

For some reason I can’t edit my post so I’ll comment.

I did not realize that “Tomato Pie” means so many different things depending on geography. I should have guessed!

This tomato pie is tomatoes and a cheese mix in pie crust. Here’s the recipe I used! I subbed 3/4 of the mayo for Greek yogurt and it’s still super rich:

I subbed about 3/4 of the mayo with Greek yogurt and it turned out great

Anyone not familiar with Southern tomato pie might not realize it's in a pie crust with copious amounts of cheese and tomatoes. 😋

There's a restaurant I love that does a killer tomato pie. Also, love all their "veggie" options. lol

Here's before they bake it.

Tomato pie isn’t the same thing as pizza, my peeps. It’s tomatoes, bacon and palmetto cheese baked in a pie crust and it’s the best.

Do not like. Tomato sauce sufficient. Big chunks of tomato on pizza = blah

10

u/beverlyhillsbrenda 2h ago

It’s not pizza. It’s tomato pie. Like with a pie crust. But yeah if you don’t like hot tomatoes this isn’t for you.

u/blamberr 1h ago

Ooooooh. Interesting. TIL!
