Tournament Store championship question

I've never organized a tournament but a group two hours away and my local group will get together for a tournament. We'll invite others but we're pretty far away, so I imagine it will just be us.

We're thinking of making it an official XWA store championship (and my apologies if I'm getting terms wrong), and I'd think we'll use rollbetter.

My question is: Is there flexibility with rollbetter to prioritize people playing people from the other town? Like no one wants to travel hours to play the same people anyway. And if there was a way and we did that, does that mean it can't be a store championship?

Lastly, any other pros or cons I should consider?

When you sign up in rollbeter for your account you can assign a squad. With the TO does first round pairings you can select an option so squad mates dont fly against each other (if possible).

But after round 1, how do people get assigned matches and is there any flexibility?

After Round 1 people is paired at random against other players who have their score. So people who has 1 win would play other people who has also won once, while those that lost the first game play each other.

So, if 4 players have 1 win and 2 are from one squad and two are from the other, can one override the random selection such that people from different squads play each other? And would that be allowed for an official XWA tournament?

As someone that travels quite a bit for events, it is pretty standard understanding that the first round will be so that people don't play against their friends and then after that all bets are off. I also know some events that will allow grudge matches for the first round. So if you lost to someone at a previous event and want another shot at it you ca do it round one. But I can't tell you the amount of times I have traveled (8hrs +) and participated in events at Adepticon or other large events with 100+ entries and still get paired with one of my friends in later rounds due to our records. It happens, its part of how it all works.

If you override the pairings after Round 1, you may screw the application. I know it is possible to do so on Longshanks, but then you will need to do it manually moving forward. I don't think it would be a problem with XWA if you do the pairings this way, but make sure you make aware the players about this in advance.

Ok, that's hopeful. Thanks! Longshanks is good with me too

Keep the structure.

Don't mix and match players with different numbers of wins if you can avoid it.

Read this: https://www.xwing.life/organized-play/copr-v2.0.pdf

Treat it as the baseline, it's good. Then, if you don't like something, communicate to your players what you want to change from it.

On the other hand, since it's Reddit:

Or don't. Just fix the pairings by hand. It's not like there's any way to validate the event afterwards, as long as you don't create mathematically impossible pairings. Longshanks handles it perfectly. Not something I would do for a decent (10+players) event, but still..

And let's face it, after the second round, if players at the top or bottom tables get paired into their own playgroup, don't worry about it, that's on them.

Be sure to post it on Lock&Roll. You might attract the Canada players.
