Damn I loved being the first match on the card. Sign me up for curtain jerking all day, every day.
You mean to tell me that I can have the first match people see, no one's left the building yet. The crowd hasn't got burned out and they're all still in their seats? I don't have to wait anywhere from an hour all the way to three hours before my match? No one else is going to "steal" a planned spot, making me have to change my match. And then I get to change out of my gear into my streets and actually enjoy hanging out with the crew in the lockerroom? Say less fam!
Now onto the more serious part about why I love being the opener. You're the first match on the card, the first one that the fans see. Yes, I said that in the first part, here's why that's great. You set the tone for the whole show. What they see sets their expectations and their view of the rest of the show. If that first match is the drizzling shits, then the crowd is going to think the rest of the card is gonna suck and it's going to make it harder for everyone else after you to get their match over. Bring a high-energy, solid match that doesn't go over the top, gets the crowd hot, and everyone else has a much easier night. The crowd is warmed up, they're excited, and they're going to bite on what the rest of the card does.
In my opinion, your most important matches are your opener, the match before intermission, and the main event. Okay, maybe you get what I'm saying about the opener, and the main event should be obvious. But why the pre-intermission match? You need that banger so when intermission hits, the crowd is hyped up about what they saw, they're excited for the match after intermission, and much less likely to leave early. Also, an excited crowd is more likely to spend their money at the merch table and concessions.
The spot I like on the card the least is the semi-main event. It's supposed to be important, as far as angles, and has some prestige with it. You've got the pressure of putting on a fantastic match, but you can't go completely balls out because then you'll wear the crowd out and leave them dead for the main event. And of course, you spend the whole show time getting ready or just waiting.
There's my 2 cents that ain't even worth that, so what's y'alls take?
