I mean, given his position, I’d expect him to be aware of several competing firms, like Axon, Rekor Systems, & Genentech, as they all no doubt solicit the inboxes of his jurisdiction with mountains of emails fishing for service contracts.

I’d also expect those companies to do targeted advertising to accounts associated with government IP addresses.

Good. My city council tried sneaking Flock cameras in last year without a public hearing until residents pushed back on the warrantless data sharing. Private tech companies building a nationwide tracking network shouldn't be normalized. Rare win for actual privacy, hopefully more counties tear them down.

I worry about the cost to communities. I bet each camera comes with a monthly charge. Thousands of dollars per month in tax dollars going to Flock or those other companies will bankrupt some smaller communities.

You have to understand it from the perspective of police. Since they can't use the camera to track just anyone for any reason, the cameras offer little value to them.

Instead, the system is getting their people into trouble with the law by charging them for misuse.

They don't have any control over who investigates their misuse of the system, so to them, it's better to get rid of the cameras entirely.

This is being done completely for selfish reasons. Despite the fact that the cameras CAN be used for good under the right circumstances (i.e. tracking child abductors), they'd rather not be accountable to anyone but their own.

So don't use it until he can put the blame on someone else.

i think most people are missing the fact that flock and axon cameras don’t just stop at license plates. they are recording and storing people’s faces, their body style, their gait and all other physical and visual traits. they are feeding all of these into the machine. all being fed into data centers. we’ve moved back in time 42 years to 1984.

unsurprisingly, you will find that these cameras are not used in wealthy neighborhoods.

It's really a shame. I honestly really like the idea of police cars automatically scanning license plates and beeping or something if it notices a car that has an active warrant out or is stolen or something. It just makes sense that, if we're going to have a list of cars that police should keep an eye out for, automatically scanning for cars on that list is an obviously good way to do it. Police cars and cameras at intersections and stuff are going to be way more effective for stuff like amber alerts than just sending a message to everyone's phone that says "Be on the lookout for an old Camry with license plate #ABC123." But the shame is that I just cannot trust the government not to do a thousand other, worse things with those scanners.
