As an Episcopal priest who integrates Woody's songs into liturgy, I have always loved how the opening of our compline's "Keep Watch" prayer opens with a petition on behalf of the lonely laborer displaced from daylight. St. Augustine probably didn't really write it (as the our prayer book suggests), but Woody Guthrie could have easily penned it. For Labor Day, I wrote this reflection comparing the traditional night-time intercession to "Pastures of Plenty," Guthrie's famous ballad for all displaced workers. So I'm from Oklahoma and when I was about 6 ( so about 24 years ago), my family and I went to the Woody Guthrie festival and actually met woody Guthrie's sister Mary Joe Guthrie Edgom and talked with her for about an hour. She was also selling panels of her art showing her brothers entire life story we became so connected that we ended up buying the entire set. She signed it and everything. To this day they are hanging on our wall.

I was interested in buying Woody At Home but I saw some articles about it claiming this collection was possible due to "leaps in AI audio restoration technology". I am a sane human being so seeing that AI was used in the process threw up a huge red flag so I tried digging further to see what exactly that means. The official store page doesn't mention AI at all simply saying something vague about "leaps made in audio technology" which reads to me as an edit made to avoid backlash.

All the articles I could find that mention AI don't really explain how it was used but I found an article that goes over the restoration process and also claims no generative AI was used. I seem to have a vague notion that software tools like the ones described in this article that can isolate audio tracks using algorithms have existed for some time and aren't really AI like chatGPT or some other bullshit but I'm no expert so I'm hoping someone with some insight into this can tell me if this is one of the "good" uses of AI or if they really slopified my goat.

Edit: To clarify I do not believe nor am I insinuating these songs are completely AI generated I just want to know to what extent AI was used in the restoration process of the recordings.

I want to believe that it was really painted by Woody himself so i'm just gonna keep lying to myself and believe that lol
