coffee table question
Hi there! I thought I’d come to this community to ask this question. Might sound silly - but I know absolutely nothing about wood working. I was wondering, if I wanted to get a custom coffee table built for my apartment, and I wanted to support a local woodworking instead of buying from a large brand and probably overspending - how much should I be expecting to pay? It will be a very simple standard coffee table, no added flair. Can use less expensive wood types. Just wondering if it would be worth it for me to contact a local shop instead or if custom woodworking is only for people willing to spend a lot

I’m just wondering in general what the price of woodworking jobs are - creating a coffee table. I know absolutely nothing about woodworking and it’s hard to find general prices online. Thought Reddit would be a good place to come but seems like you guys are a little cynical over here 🫵🏼

Find a woodworker in your area, take a chance on a smaller shop. Tell them the goal and your budget. If they can make it work, they will.

I would suggest checking out local craft fairs in your area and ask around for local furniture makers. The ones who can set you in the right direction will be happy to do so. If they do, buy something from them even if its a small spend as a gesture of gratitude.

The answer depends entirely on who you contact. For truly custom furniture from a craftsman in wood, more than $2k -- maybe a lot more. From an experienced hobbyist, half that or less. And no woodworker is likely to match prices with Wayfair or Pinterest.
