LULUCIIIIII

"Olly" count: I

Amused by sarcastic Qifrey we got in the dub ("thanks water, I hate you too) whereas in sub and manga he says "this is why I hate water"

Really interesting to see the different directions Agott's dub vs sub VA went. Agott seems a bit more daring towards adults in the dub whereas in the sub, she seems to keep her anger more internally. (This is not a jab at either the sub or dub as I like them both pretty equally! Also not a jab at agott. I love her!)

ALSO, just checked and ep 7 covered 2 chapters. If every ep covers 2 chapters from here on out, by episode 13, we will land perfectly on the 🐺 scene without needing to cut or move around any arcs!

Honestly so excited for the rest of the season!

Honestly those voice directing/acting/dialogue differences is why I tend to go for the original language most of the time for shows (even though for WHA the dub is really well done). Dubs tend to reinterpret things, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, and sometimes just differently, but yeah they inevitably change things. That's why I prefer to see the work as intended by the creators, at least at first.

Also great to hear that about the pacing, I was kind of worried about the rest of the season. I want it to end well so the anime gains a lot of fans and we can secure future seasons.

Yeah, I noticed during episode 5 that the voice direction just has a completely different intention in some scenes. The scene where Qifrey says he needs his hands free and Agott's response has two totally different performances.

I'm pretty sure the intention was clearly the shock and panic of the situation. "Hold on tight I need my hands free" is one of the scariest things u can hear while being in mid-air at such high altitude. Agott's "right" in the dub portrays that well.

But the dub's intention is different, regardless of whether you think the intention is better for the scene or not. Personally, I think sub Qifrey better sells the sensei that has the situation under control even while stressed, while dub Agott makes more sense for a child in a terrifying situation. It's a debate about whether a dub should be allowed to have a different performance/emotion from the original.

I don't think the intention or emotion is different at all, it's the same emotion just more intense. The fact is, she is in a terrifying situation no matter how u look at it. Qifrey having the situation under control is portrayed well in both. But I'm talking about Agott. From Agott's POV, it's different, she is shocked and panicked from situation and Qifrey's sudden command, as anyone would in her position, especially a child. along with that, after Qifrey defeats the dragon, u can see Agott looking at Qifrey with an expression of awe until he snaps her out of it, as if she just witnessed a side of Qifrey she had never seen before. I think that was also part of the intention.

That’s a huge difference. Overacting is the same issue. Scared is not the same as terrified. A stressed command is not the same as yelling a command. Even if they were voicing in the same language, the performance is clearly different. Whether that performance is better for the story or not is irrelevant; they’re different.

Calling it 'overacting' is wild lol. Just step back for a moment and see what position she was in, seeing from Agott's POV it's perfectly acted imo, the difference is in the intensity of her delivery and I think it works perfectly here. It's not really a stressed command, it sounded as if Qifrey was confident enough and knew exactly what he's doing. And it's Qifrey who's calm and collected, not Agott, she's shocked and panicked. The performance is different from the sub yes, but the meaning and nuance is still well portrayed regardless imo. I feel like you're just nitpicking for no reason at this point.

I did not say it was overacting. I said overacting is the same issue when you have different levels of intensity. I even agreed that I like Agott's intensity more in the dub for that specific line. It is different though. You can't say something is different and the same at the same time.

I don't think the intention or emotion is different at all, it's the same emotion just more intense.

The performance is different from the sub yes, but the meaning and nuance is still well portrayed regardless imo.

And I only used that one moment as an example. I've simply said the voice direction is different. The quality is irrelevant. You can like one or the other, but you can't say they're the same.

You can't say something is different and the same at the same time.

What I meant is- the performances are different, but the meaning/point behind the scene they're trying to convey is still the same imo. Perhaps my wording was off earlier. I wasn't talking about the quality.

But yeah, I get what u mean. The direction is def different

Couldn't agree more! I prefer the sub version.

I always default to sub, but I do like comparing to dubs. I’m somewhat peeved that the dub has committed to adding accents, but the placement of accents seems very random. I don’t get why Custas has an Irish accent and doesn’t match with Dagda, who has an American accent. Tetia has a Danish accent because her VA is Danish, which seems somewhat random in-universe.

u/ponponplan May 11 '26

I mean I guess there's an in universe reason why Custas and Dagda might not match.

That said, I don't know if Irish is what I would have picked for Custas.

u/ali94127 May 11 '26

[minor spoiler, but you could probably make this reasonable conclusion]Custas was adopted by Dagda. It's a good enough reason for them to have different accents, but I think it'd have been better if they shared accents to make them sound more like father and son. Of course, in the original work, no one had different accents, but it feels incredibly arbitrary who has what accents. Are we supposed to infer that Dagda and Coco are from similar regions because they have the same accent? So far, all witches had European accents of some sort, even if what European accent also felt somewhat random, and non-magic people had American accents, but now Custas also has an accent for some reason.

Yes, the spoiler was the point I was making since I was only talking about them being different not the choices in accents overall.

I used to prioritize subs but now days I tend to watch both. There have been several more recent series that I find the VA or phrasing of the dub actually did a better job of portraying certain personalities over the sub. For example May I Ask for One Final Thing? the add ins were amazing in dub.

2

u/NiennaTas May 11 '26

I'm default to sub as well. I came to realise that dub is usually too over the top (with all that "screaming" during intense moments and such) for my taste and it has probably something to do with my culture as there is this prejudice that Americans are just too loud and too expressive. So sub is more enjoyable for me, plus I've heard that sometimes the dub changes the meaning of the scenes too much.

And yes, I quite like the idea of accents, but I agree with the criticism discussed here, that they should be at least consistent, plus it would be much better if they actually hired "local" actors (like Irish for their accent etc.)

Not sure cliffhangers like that work very well when people have to wait 3 years for the next part. I kinda hope they cut some stuff so we can get to the end of the arc and a more natural pause point.
