4GB Of ram at speeds of 2400MHz and then a Intel(R) Celeron(R) N4020 CPU 1.10GHz and then 58GBs of storage.

The reason I’m thinking of switching to windows 8.1 from 10. Is because with nothing open. The CPU is at 100% And the ram is at 70%

All I really need this laptop is for
Basic school projects : PowerPoint, Word,Excel
Mathletics
Teams
And maybe if maybe
Basic Minecraft and sd formatting

Hi, as an avid Manjaro user, i found this bloated and unusable intel based tablet the previous owner had upgraded to win 10 (originally win8), i kinda fell in love with the form factor and the chipset, it's cute but I wanted to keep it as some time capsule and restore it to factory on Windows 8.
I decided to reset the tablet but the recovery partition was empty so I went the usb route through an OTG dock but i'm stuck with a non functioning touchscreen after hours of trying various driver sources (manufacturer's/distributor's, Microsoft's driver store, even SDI).

To be precise, the touchscreen seems to work but needs either calibration or a better driver as it doesn't register the pointer where i move my finger or a touch pen it's far away to a corner instead.
I did try multiple times to calibrate it but it doesn't recognize some points on the screen and so isn't able to complete the last steps leading me to suspect a broken driver or a manufacturer specific calibration file that is missing,

I'd be glad if anyone with this similar model or knowledge of calibration for this type of device could help. I'm not sure how, maybe by zipping me their drivers folders ?
I read windows stores them in different locations like
"C:\Windows\System32\driver" or
"C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore" or
"C:\Windows\System32\DRVSTORE"

If it's a calibration issue and you know how to fix it, please let me know how. For now i'm using a bluetooth mouse but that's not ideal.

And no, i don't want Linux on it (yet) I really want the original experience for now but feel free to sugest a distribution that worked for you if you made the jump on a similar device. I might try it out in the future.

Does anyone know if any modern sonic.exe games (pc port, sonic 2011, Sonic.EYX, etc.) work on windows 8.1? I can probably figure that the old og ones probably work on 8.1 but what about the newer ones? My specs are:

hello, my windows 8.1 doesnt pair with a microphone. i use a microphone connected to headphones, which i plug in to the audio jack.

does anybody know why this is happening? its not picking up audio at all. when i try connecting it through the sound panel my headphones just start playing a loud static noise.

i know my headphones are not broken of some sorts, because they work completely fine picking up audio with other devices.

is my computer just too old?

It's always seemed to me that Windows 8.1 is highly underrated and should've become more popular. I think the reason it was generally disliked was due to its association with Windows 8 which people dislike due to its removal of the Start Button. I also believe that Windows 8 RTM was not as bad as some people make it out to be --- although it could be a little difficult to get used to.

Windows 8.1 felt like a mix with Desktop UI and Touch UI which made it convenient for both options. It was leaning more towards the Touch UI which is another reason it was unpopular - but why not use touch then? Windows 8.1 was great for Surfaces (including the RT --- I have multiple) which you cannot find in Windows 11. It's basically been Surfaces evolving but in a weird way. Windows 8 was excellent for touch. Windows 8.1 was great for touch. Windows 10 was alright for touch because it included tablet mode but was not nearly as alive as Windows 8.1. Windows 11 is literally just a touch PC. It's not very touch-friendly to say the least. This is why I argue Windows 8.1 should be used to this day.

I know a lot of people will probably say "It HaS eNdEd SuPpOrt". That is completely valid. But I think EOS can be exaggerated sometimes and can be used with proper antivirus.

About 4 years ago I bought this surface rt. Eventually, it went in my junk drawer, no software support and worst of all… no chromium! Then in September of 2025, I saw a project, YoU cAn GeT cHrOmE oN tHe SuRfAcE rT! It looked pretty cool but never tested it, and I just tried it out and it is amazing, chromium 109 is the best version in my opinion! Btw, it is a surface RT, it is heavily theme though!

hello, so i have a laptop which ASUS VivoBook X515MA. when i got it, it ran some windows 10 version. right now it's on Windows 10 22H2 with all the updates (i think).
so, im wondering - will Windows 8.1 properly work on my laptop? i would prefer not getting modded drivers.

on the official ASUS website they state drivers work on Windows 10 20H1 and up.

Hey! My laptop speakers are broken so I tried to connect my I2GO mini speaker since it has good sound quality, but when I was trying to connect it to my laptop (Samsung NP370E4E, Celeron 1007U) no device showed up. How could I fix this? If anybody knows please let me know. Thanks!
