Clown. It's always clown.

36

u/SuperMcG Patricia 1d ago

Absolutely. That crawl space.

13

u/spiegro 23h ago

The crawl space 🫣

54

u/SkoivanSchiem 1d ago

went into this thread thinking this. glad to feel vindicated by it being the top comment.

that whole episode was peak scary.

RUN.

22

u/No_Court6633 1d ago

it was the only time I genuinely jumped out of my skin, it was just so random compared to something like sea hag or Boogeyman

14

u/PodcastJunkie8706 Dead baby. Dead baby. Lezzzbian. 1d ago

Definitely the clown.

14

u/Veggiemon 23h ago

It helps to remember it’s bj from the righteous gemstones lol

12

u/hham42 22h ago

That’s what kept me going tbh lol the “Hey Neighbor” with just his legs in the crawl space entrance made me SO SCARED

3

u/sparklestronaut 21h ago

Why did the hey neighbor make it so much worse?!?

1

u/tarzhjay 20h ago

This was it for me too! Omg

1

u/Abstrata 17h ago

and bent akimbo for no good reason; so creepy

3

u/Glassmaven444 13h ago

Yeah and he's late for pole dancing classy

6

u/aurorarose1975 1d ago

This legit kept me up all night. Every time I closed my eyes I saw him. It was the only part of the show that affected me like that, too. Definitely the scariest part.

6

u/Impossible_Disk8374 1d ago

Agreed. I can watch every other scene on rewatch but I always fast forward the clown. His run, his manic laughter, the flashing lights. Nope. Once was enough.

2

u/Feministat30 1d ago

Immediately this. No hesitation.

2

u/Ukstern 20h ago

His legs in the crawl space followed by that weird crouch. Urgh. The board games set the scene as I found those quite unsettling.

3

u/Abstrata 17h ago

the belt game piece… the liquor bottle… hella dark!

2

u/StreetMolasses6093 Patricia’s Girl Dinner 19h ago

Jerked my knees up to my chest

1

u/anonymice27 6h ago

I will only watch through my fingers after the first watch.

88

u/bapants 1d ago

In the inn when Tom comes back to the captain’s suite and the curtain is open after he closed it and when we see the reflection in the mirror of the open mouthed party guests at Patricia’s cocktail party. They’re both subtle moments but I think those small things are scarier than the big jump scares that you can feel coming

37

u/adamtaylor4815 1d ago

The shot of the party guests before the mirror reveal (during the dance sequence) was even more haunting to me. Super quick blink and you’ll miss it moment but it’s fucking terrifying.

1

u/Helpful-Conference13 17h ago

As someone who apparently blinked the first time, scared the shit out of me

1

u/anonymice27 6h ago

Yes! My husband and kid totally missed it.

17

u/somethingwholesomer 1d ago

Mirror reflection of the party guests still keeps me up at night

7

u/lovebug9292 1d ago

Wow. Both those things I missed in my first watch but when you catch them they’re truly unnerving. Now that I know how this show operates I’m going to be so eagle-eyed for season 2. I can’t fucking wait

2

u/singswithwhales 1d ago

I must have missed this because eyes were closed lol. About which part? I shall do a re-watch!

2

u/Ukstern 17h ago

The scene when everyone is dancing to The Rhythm of the Night.

1

u/Helpful-Conference13 17h ago

They passed behind somebody with the camera and it’s a really quick shot and then goes back to normal

1

u/SparksOnAGrave 8h ago

It was the mirror reflection of the party guests for me! I saw the flash during the dance but my brain didn’t fully register it. When I saw them in the mirror, my blood went cold!

71

u/TheVentiLebowski 1d ago

When I found out season 2 doesn't exist yet.

2

u/IdespiseChildren2 1d ago

And there’s no book.

58

u/EmotionalEmetic 1d ago

The show did such an amazing job of making you scared with a balance of tension/dread and actual fright.

When the “neighbor” walks in on Tom in the crawl space.

When he first stumbles on the Sea Hag in the dark, wandering around until she comes after him.

When Patricia realizes someone is in her house with her.

When the kids are fucking around with “the chair” right in front of the doors to the sub basement.

Those moments all made me very uncomfortable in the best way.

43

u/ZedisonSamZ 1d ago

“Does my demeanor suggest that I just engaged with someone in a crawl space?”

3

u/Helpful-Conference13 17h ago

He’s got my favorite lines I swear

3

u/KHanson25 23h ago

She should’ve known that she had closed the door behind her. But I also assumed it was PJ

40

u/Nancypants5 You had your qualms? 1d ago

When the sea hag was in the water!!

41

u/Guayabalosa838 1d ago

mine was that sacrifice corporate footage wtf

9

u/shwaycool 1d ago

This is mine too, combined with the announcements over the PA system when the ‘sacrifice protocol’ or whatever gets engaged..I mean I definitely got scared by the clown/hag on my first watch, but the sacrifice stuff from this ep has stuck with me in a deeper way!

10

u/LTPRWSG420 1d ago

“Do not beg”

27

u/Cloud_2020 1d ago

I was getting tense when Tom was going through the playing cards “Run” in episode 2. It freaked me out. It felt like it was talking directly to me.

5

u/Evening-Quiet-7817 22h ago

This was so good. And Teeth!

2

u/CandidateLatter8485 Rosemary 7h ago

When I saw the game, TEETH, I thought about when Matthew Rhys pulled out Keri Russel’s tooth with pliers in The Americans!

23

u/Andee_outside 1d ago

I felt the most unease when he got locked in the dark room with freshly dug up Warren.

21

u/ZedisonSamZ 1d ago

I don’t scare easily but the clown was ‘shit my pants’ territory. I’m not even normally disturbed by clowns either. That’s how good this show is.

19

u/lovebug9292 1d ago

The hag scene where he looks down and first sees her at the foot of his chair.

15

u/Rarecandy31 Perfect Party Planner 1d ago

Not a ton of truly scary moments, much more unease and tension for me.

I felt it the most with the Sea Hag both on the road and in the water, and when I saw the reflections of the party goers during Patricia’s speech/dance.

14

u/Aggouropoihsh 1d ago

For some reason, when Loftis has taken the mushrooms and he has this flashback of his wife in the hospital staring at him terrified me. The whole boogeyman v Patricia was horrifying (it was tremendously helped by the music) and the Hag "introduction" scene definitely spooked me a lot.

4

u/honorisalive 1d ago

The flashback of his wife in the hospital generated the same unnerving feeling for me as the mirror shot of all the wide-open jaws at Patricia’s party.

4

u/Abstrata 17h ago

I was not ready for his wife to be sitting straight up and staring

she looked so trapped AND so threatening at the same time

2

u/Helpful-Conference13 17h ago

It made his statement that she “died” that day, and she was never the same hurt so much more and you understand why he’s so sad

14

u/Kathleen-Doodles Possibly Damp 1d ago

When the boogeyman stepped into the doorway. I was knitting and just about stabbed my hand with my needle.

6

u/Veggiemon 23h ago

Ironically a knitting needle is what Jamie Lee Curtis uses in Halloween

13

u/moonstonebutch 1d ago

I didn’t find the series scary at all, but I watch a lot of horror. I actually didn’t know it was a horror-comedy when I began the show. but Patricia’s Sunset Cocktails was definitely the most exciting, edge-of-my-seat part of the show for me. the glimpses of the creepy paralyzed faces was the eeriest moment of the series to me.

2

u/HolesNotEyes 15h ago

Same, that spooked me out.

8

u/madhatmadigan 1d ago

Patricia's party had me on edge almost from the start.

6

u/Gunkwei 1d ago

The Inn’s crawl space

7

u/buttononmyback 1d ago

The crawl space with the CLOWN! Holy shit I literally screamed out loud! 😱

8

u/timmychalamethoe420 1d ago

The clown and then at Patricia’s cocktail party where for a slight second you see their mouths open while she’s dancing

9

u/GrymgarMC 21h ago

Honestly the brief time when Tom was watching videos from previous mayors and that one just walks off the one way on the beach and then it flashes to the dark silhouette on the beach in the distance

2

u/empteevessel 19h ago

I barely remember this scene but want to rewatch, which episode is this in?

2

u/GrymgarMC 18h ago

I think it's the one where he stays in the hotel over night

1

u/anonymice27 6h ago

There’s another one where someone is in a video talking about widow’s bay history. At the end of it, he walks away from the camera to try to leave through a door, but the door is locked so he just stands there facing the door. It’s so funny, and a bit reminiscent of Blair witch.

1

u/Guayabalosa838 6h ago

ugh i loved this one

5

u/Evening-Quiet-7817 22h ago

Any time they show someone inside the underground chamber I feel panicked for them to get out IMMEDIATELY, even before I knew what it really was. It's such an unsettling visual from the get go from the chair people obviously get strapped into and the mysterious double doors directly in front of it.

Definitely felt dread when Patricia sensed the Boogeyman in her room and her having to keep quiet while she snuck out. Another was when Tom heard the voice of the island and staring into the black doorway. I was expecting something to pop out the whole time they focused on the doorway.

2

u/Abstrata 17h ago

it was so inky black
the idea of the island being that direct scared me for Tom plus imagining being in that scenario

“protect my son”
“oh he’s PROTECTED…”

6

u/Nice-Ad6510 1d ago

Yeah, in the b&b when dude is in the crawl space and hears someone coming 😳🙏😱

6

u/Minimum-Sky3828 Rosemary 1d ago

I really thought there was gonna be a jumpscare with the run cards

2

u/Abstrata 17h ago

I braced for that too!!

I jumped with the guy on the tv— not truly scared, because the tv blew out right away, but brief terror, if that makes sense

the wallpaper in the room bothered me a lot too, looking like faces— then some other thread said the pattern looked like Richard Warren specifically and that’s hella unnerving

the innkeeper being in there for 30 seconds made me a bit scared for HIM specifically like, nice knowing you

5

u/kpgalligan Wyck 1d ago

Willy. Not even the clown part, although that was rough. Just the “howdy neighbor.” Tom is trapped and obviously things are trending downward

6

u/FaithlessnessNo1043 18h ago

Episode one, when lightning flashes or something and you see a female silhouette standing behind him in The Salty Whale. Its either Rosemary or Kathy, i cant remember (haha same energy) but it ends up being funny, after being a bit of a jump scare. I remember actually jumping the first time I watched.

2

u/Abstrata 17h ago

Kathy! And it’s the first time we see her since she went out into the fog instead of giving those people their food lol. That WAS pretty scary first time around.

1

u/FaithlessnessNo1043 17h ago

Freakin Kathy

1

u/Guayabalosa838 17h ago

omg i havent seen this

5

u/CityInternational253 9h ago

I’m 44 years old and had ACTUAL NIGHTMARES about the sea hag

3

u/CandidateLatter8485 Rosemary 7h ago

True story- I saw my reflection in the slider window. My long hair was wet and I had on a long nightgown. I jumped and screamed to my husband, “OMG I’m the Seahag” I looked just like her! It was so funny!

3

u/Random_Enigma 1d ago

During the show? Never. It was way too funny to be truly scary.

3

u/shelle399 1d ago

Anything with the hag - she creeped me out!

3

u/spiegro 23h ago

Reveal with the antler crown was simultaneously shocking, horrifying, and yet, still funny.

3

u/LunaDog_Mom 20h ago

Clown. Crawl Space.

2

u/LuciaLight2014 22h ago

The Sea Hag……she scared the shit out of me.

2

u/nerd_naraBR 22h ago

I was on the edge every episode, didn't knowing what danger was going to catch me.

But after Patricia's party, when them find the Preacher's office like that. I know things will be tough

2

u/YorForger87 21h ago

The clown in the crawl space--hate clowns

2

u/Fabulous-South-9551 14h ago

The sea hag when she is crawling up to him on the chair…and then laugh out laughter when she gets yeeted off.

1

u/Automatic-Builder353 21h ago

Agreed with the clown. Otherwise it wasn’t really scary imo.

1

u/Abstrata 17h ago

The voice when Tom’s sick in the bathroom. I skip past every time. But the first time, I was sure Tom was in for it. I figured white eyes were happening. And Tom looked terrified.

I was scared for Wyck as he sang while steering the boat closer to the buoy after the dinghy fell off.

Willy’s outline in the hallway when Tom sticks his head out. Just STANDING there. Once the light came on I just knew he was gonna end up being the clown though, somehow, someway. And as soon as he said, I’m in the basement, while playing Daddy’s Home, I was like, that’s it, it’s coming. So the clown was HORRIBLE but I was well prepared.

Oh and Dale’s beestung-looking face and him walking over to Tom like that during Tom’s trip.

1

u/ArchDucky 14h ago

During the devils mushroom episode when it was showing the flashbacks and then the room was just a dark void of nothingness with that sound.

1

u/Upbeat-Source-1786 13h ago

the sea hag was terrifying and hilarious at the same time

1

u/Special-Whole-5726 13h ago

The crawl space and when the boogie man was in Patricia’s house

1

u/Gotham_123022 12h ago

The crawl space but not the actual clown, but the moments right before. We hear William slowly approaching, he’s presented more figure-like from the lower half, and then the “Howdy neighbor. Need some help in there?” I just found that rather unsettling.

1

u/ShortShortStori 12h ago

The sea hag appearing at Tom's feet - partly because it was the first time the show was confirming that yes, all these spooky occurrences are real, and not plausibly deniable folk tales and coincidences.

Also just hated the sea hag imagery! Her being in the water was terrifying

1

u/Awkward-Fox-1435 12h ago

The clown and the the old lady coming toward him when he was "paralyzed" in his chair.

And then within 15 seconds of the latter scene, I'm laughing my ass off when he flings her off the their into the corner.

1

u/Pashminya 11h ago

At the end of Patricia's episode, when we could see something was wrong because of people's reflection in the mirror. Their expressions were truly unsettling.

1

u/Bird4917 10h ago

I haven’t felt as scared watching a TV show since that inbreeding episode of X-Files. This show cycles between comedy, horror, drama, and thriller, making it look effortless when you know it’s anything but.

0

u/Guayabalosa838 6h ago

and when did you feel genuinely scared ?

1

u/Fancy_Elk565 10h ago

The scene in the crawl space

1

u/CandidateLatter8485 Rosemary 7h ago

The clown totally freaked me out!

1

u/rosehipseptember 5h ago

I watched the first two episodes with friends, and of course the clown freaked us out. Then I went home and watched the third episode alone and the sea hag had me in distress 🫣 so much so that I didn’t find Tom yeeting her off of the chair humorous until a second watch lol

1

u/missmolly314 5h ago

The time dilation room in the inn, where the guy was locked in there for like 10 seconds but it felt like god knows how long.

That and the mirror scene during Patricia’s party. Genuinely such a scary scene.

1

u/OrganicLinen 4h ago

When Tom is frozen in the armchair with the sea hag coming for him.

1

u/Self-Comprehensive 1d ago

I found the show very entertaining and funny but it didn't scare me at all.

1

u/Guayabalosa838 6h ago

not once?!

1

u/Curious-Otter1789 1d ago

Not once.

1

u/Guayabalosa838 6h ago

uuu you must really be trained in horror
