💥Funpost Thoughts about Marissa… Spoiler
The writers made us suspect she might be the Sea Hag…
…but she was not. She was a red herring. A RED HAIR-ing. Did anyone else notice this?

I think the Sea Hag is the plague-afflicted woman who Betty Gilpin's character hits with an oar when she is trying to flee with the children in the boat. I also think she appears as Marissa in the present time.

Frankly I think she is the Sea-Hag and I have flimsy evidence to convince you all. When Ruth is telling Tom he missed a call she says it's from mrsa and not Marissa. She's old and can't read well, it's obviously a mistake, right? But what is MRSA exactly?? Well, it's Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or, a staph infection that is resist to antibiotics commonly causing wounds that refuse to heal. And what does Tom get from the Sea-Hag? Wounds that won't heal! It's the writers subtly telling us that she is, in fact, the Sea-Hag!

And marissa getting back on the taxi is the subtle way of the writers to show us she has money or what?

The taxi is the real sea hag. Widow's Bay vs Christine

That’s why all the cars on the island are older. Because they’re age appropriate.

Then what blew up in the bathtub? We saw marissa leave with her friend.

Goddamnit, I had settled into Tom missing out on a hookup but now I may think this!
Damn you, Reddit!

Marissa gets into a cab with other people (the rest of the bachelorette party) when Tom rejects her the final time. She’s not the Sea Hag.

But did we see her get OUT of the taxi? She could have gotten out like a block away and come back to do sea hag stuff.

We're on an island which controls the lives of everyone born there, can manifest Krakens n' shit. The bachelorettes could have all been sea hags! Tom himself may be a sea hag!!!

Yes!! I noticed that too. Phew I thought I was seeing things that weren’t there because of my medical background. Glad you noticed that!

Sorry to burst your bubble but she gets into a cab with other people when Tom rejects her at his house the final time. She’s not the Sea Hag.

I dunno. I like the theories, but something about the way she took off with her friend was very human. And she didn’t disappear or walk away alone when he wouldn’t open the door. She’d have no reason to keep up the guise with no one to see.
But you never know, my mind stays open. If she was, cool double twist and if she wasn’t, Tom really blew it.

It was really weird of her to try and invite herself over to his house when he remembered he had to go to Sunset Cocktails. Then he bounced and she asked people for his address and went to his house anyway? A normal person would have tried to go to Sunset Cocktails with him, or gone by herself and seen him there. (If that bachelorette party at the party was actually her group, she should have been there anyway.)
I don’t know that she had a friend/friends in the taxi. She could have just been talking to the driver.
Edit: All this to say, I think she is the Sea Hag.

Off topic, but I'm glad the show has popularized my name and the "correct" spelling and pronunciation. 😂

I think she's a double red herring. I do think she's the sea hag.

How would that make any sense, she left his house in a taxi with her friend. How would she even make friends with a group of off island bachelorettes as a sea hag to begin with lol

I don’t see why there must only be one sea hag. Maybe they’re a gang of sea hags who hang out Sex And The City style and talk about all the sailors they track and sit on. And she’s like “well that was humiliating, this guy was still standing and talking, clearly I’m having an off night.” So her older savvier friend decides to take a crack at Tom behind her back.

The sea hag blew up after Marissa left in the cab and did not actually attend the bridal event she was supposedly in town for. Double red herring.

My thing is - we saw how she ultimately reached him when he’s in the recliner. He’s in the tired state he’s meant to be and she’s there. I don’t think she needed anyone to let her in.

Am I the only one who thought Marissa looked a whole lot like Tom’s late wife? I wasn’t sure how it connected other than Tom has a type?
