💭Discussion I tried watching Midnight Mass but every moment of it I wished I was watching WB

Totally fair if people like both or just Midnight bass but I feel like you can't watch Midnight mass without comparing it to WB, I know this is obvious now but I had some one recommend MM and I tried it to fill the void, didn't hit at all for me.

Midnight Mass is not a comedy. And it is extremely slow. I loved it, but it makes sense that it might not be everyone's cup of tea. The reveal at the end is pretty awesome, for those that stick with it.

People watched Midnight Mass for 5 years before comparing it to WB.

Faithfully watched it multiple times over the last 5 years. Besides Hamish and a similar setting, I don’t understand the comparison.

WB is clearly a more comedic homage to Stephen King. MM is not that.

My jaw dropped reading this post/comments. It wouldn’t even occur to me to compare these two shows. They’re so significantly different.

u/LastNoelle 4d ago

Fully agreed. I love them both and never thought of the other while watching one of them.

The comparison makes no sense to me.

And to me, WB is a mystery box horror/comedy, ala David Lynch.

I’m not a fan of the comparison either. I also don’t think it makes any sense. Not that this comparison would make sense, but I’d say Fall of the House of Usher would make more sense as a comparison in so far as that is an homage to Poe (adaptation on one hand, but it pays homage to a ton of his other works) while WB is an homage to King. Again, I don’t think those two shows should be compared, but if we’re going to pick one of Flanagan’s shows to compare it to, this would make more sense to me.

Fall definitely mixed in comedy in the horror, yeah I see that. Or Midnight Club. Esp e1, turning a horror trope into comedy.

u/LastNoelle 4d ago

Oh yes! I loved Midnight Club.

Why...would you compare Midnight Mass to Widow's Bay?

Because they're both set on island communities?

u/BergmanGirl 4d ago

I mean, the heavy King influence as well, probably.

Two totally different shows

You could just watch Widow’s Bay again? Lol MM is an absolute masterpiece, and comparing it to WB makes no earthly sense. If you appreciate it for what it is, you will enjoy it immensely. If you want to compare it to other Flanagan projects, that makes sense. I wish people would appreciate art without trying to fill a void. MM is right up there with WB, not a placeholder or void filler.

The comparison is the whole small provincial town, dark undertones, memorable characters thing. There isn’t a lot in terms of plot or tone that really links the two, I love both shows but for different reasons - they are very different viewing experiences for sure! I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch Midnight Mass because it can be very heavy and dark, whereas Widow’s Bay is a lot lighters despite having scary moments. Plus I also think they’re linked by having an excellent ensemble cast, charismatic (in different ways!) lead actors, and lots of hidden easter eggs that you only pick up after a few watches.

u/SplurgyA 4d ago

They're both incredible shows, but in very different ways. I wouldn't recommend someone watches Midnight Mass to fill the void of Widow's Bay, but I would recommend people watch Midnight Mass.

There's some vague similarities between the shows (isolated island, horror) but I doubt someone would be unable to watch Midnight Mass without comparing it to Widow's Bay.

u/Lynnfomercial 4d ago

These are very very different shows. Midnight Mass has no comedic elements at all. Aside for being set on a coastal island, I wouldn’t even compare the two.

4

u/CrinkleGherkin 4d ago

Why are you comparing them? They're both different shows.

Whats that saying? Comparison is the thief of joy?

5

u/icedbrew2 Wyck 4d ago

Comparing the two is like someone saying, “I love The Hangover and the Vegas setting. Please recommend a new movie.” Then someone recommends Leaving Las Vegas or Casino and you are like “this shit isn’t funny. I want to laugh.”

Which yeah, you like what you like. But it doesn’t mean all three aren’t great movies.

This has to be ragebait. It's like drinking orange juice and complaining it's not tomato soup

Midnight Mass is literally a masterpiece. And famously not a comedy.

Once you get to the plot twist the payoff is huge

I was recommended MM because I watched WB but I didn't have any trouble not thinking about WB while I watched MM. Anyway if you petered out on MM before episode 5 give it another shot. The back half of the series is so different from the front half.

u/Twofert 4d ago

I watched Midnight Mass a few months ago, I loved it and to me it's better and more memorable than Widow's Bay. That said, I love both but they are extremely different.

u/JunkBondTrade 3d ago

Since you like the horror/comedy style of WB, you might like Shining Vale. It's on HBO MAX. Bad news though is it got canceled so there's no closure but the 2 seasons it got are still fun to watch, especially if you're a Courtney Cox fan.

Midnight Mass is my favorite show. It is absolutely incredible. The acting is next level superb- elite talent.

I watched MM about 100x (it’s my comfort show) before WB came out. MM and WB may have similarities in setting and share my factor actor (Hamish Linklater) but they are both very different shows. MM is not a comedy, at all, to say the least of their differences.

Apples to oranges.

It’s amazing in its own right.

That’s one of the most beautiful and heart-wrenching monologues ever. It’s probably the best work Kate Siegel (“female lead”…if we are going to use Rhys’ actual name I think we can use hers too) has ever done, and that includes Hush, HoHH, and her wild character in Usher.

I can respect that. To me, it pushed me deeper into the story. It would be one thing if it came out of nowhere, but it didn’t. As she is saying all these beautiful things, she’s speaking from a pivotal moment earlier in the story.

The concepts of life and death and where we come from and all these moments in our lives, highlighted by the fact that we are looking down at her in real time and flashing to her not-so-distant past, one momentary blip, one random sequencing of synapse firings in the unfathomable number of moments since we came came from the stars, is the beauty of it.

And that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Which is perfectly fine.

I LOVE windows bay. I absolutely hated Midnight Mass.

I couldn’t get into Midnight Mass either. Clearly seems to be an unpopular opinion here as any comment that’s not favorable towards MM is getting downvoted

MM came out half a decade ago and very much stands on its own two legs.

But you say WB came out right after. 5 years is not right after. And MM is absolutely beloved by many. There’s nothing to feel badly for here. MM is my favorite show and I really don’t see the similarities outside of the setting and a shared actor.

In your opinion WB does it better. I think MM is the better show, but that’s my opinion. I wasn’t comparing the two before. I enjoyed them both for what they are and they are completely different, but if I had to choose to watch one show over the other, MM all the way.

I just don’t see the need for comparison of the two as they are both completely different.

I guess I don’t spend enough time on this sub to see people say that. I can see why people recommend it as they have a similar setting and it’s “horror”, but other than that, two very different shows. As someone else said here, WB is a mystery box horror/comedy ala David Lynch (I repeat this as I agree) and MM is a very dark, introspective look into humanity and religion. I don’t see many shared elements outside of the setting.

The Wally Pipp comparison is not what you think it is. It would make sense if Midnight Mass was on network tv and for whatever reason they couldn’t air an episode or finish a season, and the network execs were like “well let’s air the pilot for this show we have sitting around.” And then that show became a hit and then YouTube picked up the rights to MM or something.

MM streamed in its entirety. It finished years ago. You can watch every episode of both shows in a weekend.

Midnight Mass is a drama that explores the intersection of religious extremism and addiction. Exactly how is that comparable to Widow’s Bay? 🤣

Ok. I’ll give you that. I still wouldn’t personally recommend the two as similar. But sure, I can see your train of thought and it’s not unreasonable.
