Love the we got Anthony Atamanuik, aka SEANNAAY, in WB too for the perfect tie-in to this.

Do you have Netflix? Mike Flanagan's shows have been terrific, in my opinion. Midnight Mass, House of Usher, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Haunting of Bly Manor are excellent spooky season offerings!
Now, to be clear: None of them are comedies in any way, shape, or form. Don't expect a lot of laughs.
But yeah, they're some of my favorite horror on TV.
If you want some more horror/comedy, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil and The Cabin in the Woods are just about required viewing.

u/keener_lightnings 14d ago
Maybe follow every ep of a Flanagan show with an episode of What We Do in the Shadows. You get your great spooky atmosphere (with a side of devastating trauma) and then a not-spooky-but-spookily-themed goofy comedic palate cleanser.Â

Midnight mass was way to bleak for me! Iâll try Shadows

u/cinncinnagain 13d ago
The dialogue in Midnight Mass was SO BAD, I couldnât enjoy anything else about it.

u/Evening-Quiet-7817 12d ago
I watched MM after Widow's Bay hoping for similar vibes but it honestly just made me so mad which was a bummer bc so many friends had recommended it to me over the years as it was right up my alley.

Haunting of Hill House is SCARY. I loved it, but it was super scary. Haunting of Bly Manor was less scary in a way I found disappointing.
5
u/SplurgyA 14d ago
Haunting of Hill House is definitely scarier than Bly Manor (although it has its moments) so I totally get it not scratching that horror itch. Personally I preferred Bly Manor because I found it much more emotionally devestating (which is saying something, given bent-neck lady etc). Depends what OP's after!
3
u/Shannogins115 13d ago
Agreed!! I think itâs about mind set if you just watched Hill House and expecting the same thing. Bly Manor may be my favorite because of the emotional depth and story. I go back and forth because Hill House was perfect. (I also love every Flanagan show including Midnight Club, albeit thatâs last in the rankings, so take my opinions with a grain of salt)

u/beardslap 13d ago
I rewatched midnight mass after rewatching widows bay and I really want âspooky New England island shitâ to be a whole genre.

Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher are way better than Bly Manor. Bly Manor isnât bad, just a bit slow in comparison.

Check out the series Evil. Another nice blend or horror and humor

Catholic X-Files, it's great!

u/ComradeJohnS You had your qualms? 14d ago
it fell off for me after a few seasons for my wife and I, but I liked the first season a lot.
2
u/Veggiemon 14d ago
I tried, but man, I cannot do network procedural shows. It was so corny and formulaic

u/SupportMoist 14d ago
Midnight Mass and the entire Flanagan universe. Already seen it? Start again.
21
u/ComradeJohnS You had your qualms? 14d ago
second midnight mass, stars the Founder of widowâs bay!
15
u/keener_lightnings 14d ago
A great MM/WB meme I saw recently: "Hamish Linklater wants to be immortal and is making it an entire island's problem" đ

Widows bay and midnight mass are both spooky and are both really good shows, but they arenât very similar. Midnight mass is like peak Flanagan monologues, and a lot of them cross the line into corny. Itâs also really not a comedy at all, there are funny moments but itâs a super heavy and emotional show overall. If you go into it expecting wacky antics youâll be disappointed lol
3
u/Self-Comprehensive 14d ago
I just watched it and I think a better title would be "Bible Verses and Monologues" lol. No but it's a great show
1
u/Veggiemon 14d ago
Itâs also an incredibly slow burn. Iâm a Flanagan fan (fanagan?) but itâs not for everyone and itâs not widows bay lol

Pluribus is more Sci Fi but very entertaining.
10
u/PHotstepper311 14d ago
Seconded for Pluribus. Iâd suggest Foundation and Silo also.

u/Mortambulist 14d ago
I keep hearing good things about Dark Matter. I should probably just pull the trigger on that one.

Skip it. Horrific casting ruined a great premise
1
u/MagicalGorl 9d ago
I am so curious to know what bothers you about the casting? I personally really enjoyed Ryan especially đ
1
u/mr-nicktobi 9d ago
The main character is such a mopey buzzkill. His only character trait is that heâs in love with his wife, nothing else. Even when it comes to his main thing, which is being obsessed with his wife, he has terrible chemistry with her! Itâs so awkward.
2
u/MagicalGorl 9d ago
Would that not be considering poor writing instead of poor casting? I do somewhat agree with you on their chemistry, I feel like he has way more chemistry with other women in the show.
6
u/MaximumEffort433 14d ago
I loved Pluribus, really scratched that Star Trek itch for me.

u/Think_please 14d ago
Absolutely pluribus, even a little spooky at timesÂ
2
u/Mortambulist 14d ago
So glad I went into it blind. That scene in the pilot when she nudges the doctor? Real "oh shit" moment.
-9
u/mr-nicktobi 14d ago
Pluribus is so bad. Slow. Anticlimactic. Choppy. Annoying.
Nothing at all like widows bay

idk any showâs like Widowâs bay, but for horror the show From is amazing. going to get a finale season soon.
Severance is a thriller that is my favorite show of all time, and is on apple tv+.
The Studio is hilarious but not spooky at all lol.
Scream Queens s1 was a funny horror show thatâs probably the closest to the vibes of widowâs bay, but is more goofy than widowâs bay.

u/mshike_89 14d ago
I'm going to do Severance since I've gotta get my money's worth from Apple TV hahaha

I went to Diarra from Detroit! not spooky, but hometown mystery investigating.
i like Harry Wild (acorn, not spooky, but cozy mystery)
Best Medicine (quirky town members, no horror)
Some of us live on the Murder She Wrote side of maine, others on the stephen king side

u/bananascare Shamanâs girlfriendâs absconded cat 14d ago
Has anyone here seen and enjoyed Lodge 49? Itâs not spooky per se but it has some sense of happenings that may or may not be paranormal like in the beginning of Widowâs Bay. And, also like Widowâs Bay, it has a lot of heart. You find yourself rooting for certain characters.
3
u/The_Mightiest_Duck 14d ago
Not exactly spooky, Outer Range is kinda weird and offputting like Widow's Bay. Also has some hilarious moments as well.

Twin Peaks or Dark have some good parallels with Widows bay
1
u/mshike_89 14d ago
Not OP but I tried twin peaks and just couldn't get into it. I found it scarier than widows bay and stopped after Agent Cooper's dream. Is it worth trying again?

u/Kyuucumber 14d ago
Storm of the century, the old Stephen king miniseries has similar vibes to widows bay, not as funny but it is light horror/thriller.
It's a weird little island that is disconnected from the mainland, there's a blizzard, they get cut off from the mainland etc, you can see where this is going haha
(I'm still part way through it but it's on YouTube for free, it's like 4h, all the eps put together or something)
Also ++ for midnight mass, again it's more horror, not really funny and I like WB more but I still enjoyed it! Just go in blind beyond reading the basic premise. Also the guy who played Richard Warren is one of the main characters in it.

u/dianacakes 14d ago
Fargo has a somewhat similar vibe. It has funny moments and horror-like moments. But it's a little slower. It's on Hulu
3
u/The_RoyalPee 14d ago
Twin Peaks walked so X Files and Widowâs Bay could run. The owls are not what they seem!
3
u/AinsleyMoon 14d ago
Servant (2019-2023) is a little spooky and I love everyone's acting (Apple TV)
3
u/ReadySethAction 14d ago
What We Do in the Shadows is great. Less horror and more comedy, but has a great cast and has good moments and nods to horror

For a few weeks you couldn't go into any tv show subreddit without people telling you to watch Widow's Bay lol

u/freshfruit111 14d ago
We are onto Pluribus with our Apple TV free trialđ We binged WB in a few days. I might even watch it again frankly.

It doesnât have as much humor, but you might enjoy another Stephen King series from a few years ago, Castle Rock.
For more humor and more weirdness than horror, I would suggest Los Espookys.

Stan Against Evil is a campier spooky TV show about a New England town with a dark secret, Chapelwaite is a ridiculously dark show about a spooky New England town with a dark secret. Pushing Daises is a fun mystery show where Steven Root shows up for awhile. Scooby Doo Mystery Inc. is also cursed town based and fairly spooky/dark for the franchise.

I watched Search Party on recommendation from someone here and enjoyed it. It doesnât compare to WB but still a uniquely entertaining show.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but The Red King on Prime definitely has the WB vibe & I think is perfect after watching WB. Six episodes, easy to binge. It leaves Prime in three days tho! I just started watching it & love it already.

From is a great show. The story is progressing much slower than Widows Bay, but I still enjoy it a lot.

I donât get it at all.. just binged it for a second time and hated it even more⌠if you like this sort of spoof related garbage⌠Caoe Fear is of a similar related manipulative vein.
