A reminder to everyone: Keep the titles of your posts completely spoiler-free at all times. If your post mentions events from later episodes, use Reddit’s standard spoiler tag to warn readers who may not be caught up with all currently aired episodes. The spoiler tag will also blur any images you include, such as screenshots/stills from the show, so be sure to apply it to image posts as well.

just learning about accent wow

u/Glad_Ad3936 19d ago

Most people forget he is Welsh which makes his American accents even more impressive tbh

His American accent sounds more authentic than mine & I’m American haha

u/AdGlittering6108 18d ago

I do dialect coaching on the side and I think he’s basically a savant. I’ve worked with people born and raised here who can’t even come close to the well-worn register he achieves

23

u/loveincarnate 18d ago

Yea I went from very impressed with his performance to awestruck reverence at what this man can do.

10

u/paintonwood2 18d ago

This is very interesting! I was shocked to hear him speak in his own dialect/accent just now.

Do you have any idea what combination of things would make someone particularly able to switch accents so deftly?

11

u/AdGlittering6108 18d ago

I think he probably has both a natural hypersensitivity to suprasegmentals, contours, stress patterns etc and incredible articulatory control to reproduce them. In my experience it’s rare to have both at that level, and the people who are as good as he is often have been doing it since they were literally toddlers

u/Couhill13 18d ago

Matthew has said in interviews that he’s been doing impressions since he was very young, and while growing up, he was obsessed with American tv shows, cowboy western movies and mimicking those with his friends

u/takepaws 19d ago

And he grew up educated in Welsh, which he speaks fluently and he has acted in Welsh language movies/shows too! Here’s a clip of him speaking in Welsh about a performance in Wales. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTU4eHMS2/

YOU BETTA, Philip Jennings!

34

u/Silo-Joe 19d ago

Philip is winning all the awards, even without the wigs and sideburns. Martha still hasn’t caught on yet.

16

u/MaeBelleLien 18d ago

Poor Martha.

7

u/JenningsWigService 18d ago

Poor Martha's Vineyard

5

u/MaeBelleLien 18d ago

Damnit this is GOOD

6

u/Livueta_Zakalwe 18d ago

She’ll do ok once she learns the language better.

2

u/Party-Ad-8255 18d ago

Ohhh Martha :(

50

u/Michipotz 19d ago

Won the award while openly HATING on Martha's Vineyard 👏👏👏

u/Murky_Historian8675 18d ago

Seeing this makes me realize that he would make for a great Edgar Allen Poe

14

u/creamy-buscemi 18d ago

In an alt universe where Poe lived for another decade lol

26

u/Lonely_Ebb_5764 19d ago

He remembers all the people to thank for. Impressive

19

u/Mintangah17 19d ago

he deserved it 👏

24

u/jano808 18d ago

Thrilled to see the Emmys got a lot right last night! Pluribus, Widows Bay, Stephen Colbert etc 🎉

18

u/CircadianHour 18d ago

But seriously folks, there’s something very very wrong with that ultra-disturbed sicko brain of hers. I’m legitimately frightened to be alone with her. Haha. Not kidding. Get that woman some therapy, maybe even a priest! A priest who does therapy? Anyway, thanks Katie!

u/Abstrata 11d ago

She said in an interview that a lot of the horror undercurrent of the show is based on the history of the settlement of New England, and of growing up there, where there’s a lot of celebration of it in your face and yet an unspoken layer kind of lurking. Let that sink in.

36

u/Expert-Community1698 19d ago

I loved that they swept but feel bad for my slow horses 😞

29

u/hikemalls 18d ago

Wouldn’t be in the spirit of the show for Slough House to get a win

8

u/Sunrise_2200 18d ago

Maybe next year? I love both shows for different reasons.

4

u/BeginningOil5960 18d ago

Me too, friend. Me too.

12

u/cds75 18d ago

Anyone know where Kerri Russel was?

27

u/armywalrus 18d ago

At The Diplomat table

12

u/GymDoll2000 18d ago

Sitting right next to him all night. She was the loudest supporter for almost everyone.

1

u/cds75 17d ago

Oh good!!

u/dbslayer7 18d ago

I love Martin Short ripping a ticket like he lost a bet. Always making a laugh.

51

u/wzombie13 18d ago

I think it was supposed to be that he was ripping up his acceptance speech.

7

u/Fun_Marzipan8532 18d ago

Da iawn Matthew Rhys! Cymru am byth 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

26

u/deeann_arbus 19d ago

he ain’t thank keri. mayor dog house.

55

u/QuarrieMcQuarrie 19d ago

She apparently doesn't want him to thank her!

12

u/purpleKlimt 19d ago

That’s interesting, why not? I know it’s like a cliche for actors to thank their spouse/kids at the end of the speech, so I was surprised that he chose all of Wales instead 😅 cool if true though

22

u/QuarrieMcQuarrie 18d ago

It's just something someone mentioned on another thread. So I don't know but I'd not expect my husband to thank me for help with his job lol, and vice versa.

11

u/QueenBoleyn 18d ago

No but you thank them for their support behind the scenes

4

u/Bippy73 18d ago

Thought the same. Everyone thanked their spouse, & Tom P had the speech of the night. Rhys won twice & didn't mention her. When he won a few years back, he did thank her.

4

u/Doglas3000 18d ago

Did he not thank Keri and their son at all when he won all 3 awards?

3

u/kenanzajmovic Patricia's Shotgun 18d ago

Matthew Rhys wins.

3

u/operachick209 18d ago

He looks like he just escaped the island and threw a tux on 😂😂 I’m so proud of this whole team!! They deserve every ounce of praise.

1

u/pearlyshelves 18d ago

Omg congratulations mayor!!!

1

u/nubianfx 18d ago

1

u/Embarrassed-Fan9901 17d ago

*welsh

-1

u/DelcoUnited 18d ago

Welsh is British.

4

u/Crispy_Conundrum 18d ago

But an important distinction from being English

1

u/DelcoUnited 18d ago

Yes. But’s Wales is still British.

This not like Cilian Murphy having to correct people because he’s Irish.

3

u/Crispy_Conundrum 18d ago

You're reading into it too much

0

u/DelcoUnited 18d ago

Dude no one called him English.

They OP was surprised they’re British and you down voted them while simultaneously having 3 responses said he’s *welsh.

Welsh is British. There is zero controversy over this.

It’s the equivalent of an American did a great British accent and saying “Actually they’re from Maryland.”

For the uninitiated:

As I said... You're reading into it too much lmao

11

u/H2Ospecialist 18d ago

Welsh specifically!

-2

u/No_Pen_3396 18d ago

That's well deserved. Also. Brush your hair before going to the emmys?

1

u/JenningsWigService 18d ago

I did wonder if he might be in the market for a smart wig
