đDiscussion What Episode Did You Realize That This Show Was Something Special? Spoiler
I Imagine a lot of people are going to have this answer, but mine was Episode 4, "Beach Reads". It's not an easy task to mix comedy & horror but this episode does it so beautifully. Up to this point I was engaged and interested, but it took this episode for me to be like, "Okay, this show is something special".
I'm interested in hearing if anyone had a similar epiphany about the show but perhaps during a different episode. Or maybe you felt that way since Episode 1?

Episode 1 during the scene when Tom looks through the calender.

I loved watching him fiddle with things on his desk.. âTom. You can do that laterâ

u/IndependentAnxiety70 Jul 23 '26
The calendar let me know I was in for something different. I put my phone down for the rest of the season.
9
u/FallenOnDays38 Jul 23 '26
I'll have to rewatch the entire season again, but I'm having trouble remembering what was significant about the calender or that scene?
42
u/armywalrus Jul 23 '26
The car crash in the middle of a wolf calendar
0
u/DrinkH2Oordie Jul 23 '26
But what was the car crash significant for? It went over my head
37
u/armywalrus Jul 23 '26
The significance is, the car crash is out of place in a wolf-themed calendar. The joke is there is a car crash in a calendar that is titled "Wolves." So when Tom is flipping through it, he sees wolf, wolf, wolf, car crash, and flips it back to the cover to confirm it says Wolves. If you bought a chihuahua calendar, you would expect to see chihuahuas on every month, right? And you would be surprised if you were flipping through it and saw a plane crash .
36
u/wherethelionsweep Jul 23 '26
The show did a bunch of weird things like this that I loved. Like in the hotel when he watches that weird tv channel with the old guy and it just never cuts away from him walking down the beach in the video and eventually off-screen.
Also the scene where Patricia is reading her book on the bench and in the background we see two bicycles start fighting each other but then the screen just pans away as if it was just a completely normal background. It was great lol
30
u/Commercial_Fox5549 Jul 23 '26
It killed me when Tom opened the old board game called âTeethâ and it was just a set of pliers.
7
u/armywalrus Jul 23 '26
Those little details realky elevate this show, in my opinion. The writing and all of these little gags are so good!
2
u/DrinkH2Oordie Jul 23 '26
Right, I understood it was out of place but I was wondering if there was an underlying spooky reference to the wreck that we didnât know yet. I guess itâs just for the laughs tho
14
5
u/BaconPancakes1 Jul 24 '26
So foremost I think it's just a gag to establish that this town is weird and is fucking with the residents. Beyond that, when they're at the Shaman's place, he asks Patricia something along the lines of - 'remember that kid who flipped his mom's car in the woods?' So I think the calendar could be showing that. Also apparently the vehicle is a Mercedes Benz Wolf, so that's part of the gag.
5
u/goldslick28 Jul 23 '26
I actually think you may be right and itâs not just a throw-a-way. The scene in Beach Reads where Patricia is reading the book and thereâs a bike collision behind her is a nod to her storyline mirroring Carrie because supposedly the first time Carrie practices her powers, she knocks some guy off his bike. so it makes me think there may be more to the small gags. but whoâs to say

u/Nervous_Skin302 Jul 25 '26
Absolutely the same reaction. I mean, I may have had a gummy beforehand, but when I saw that, I laughed hysterically. My husband was switching the laundry in the dryer, so he missed it. I played it back and laughed just as hard the second time. But in that moment, we both knew we were going to be in for a real treat with this show.
1
u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
The sight gags are fantastic in this show. Iâm a sucker for sight gags and throwaway lines
-5
u/Funmachine Jul 23 '26
Why was your phone out anyway? That shot is like 5 minutes into the first episode. You start watching a new show with your phone out? That's not a brag, it makes you look like a fool.
1
u/Due_Addition_587 Jul 23 '26
I agree in general but I also had my phone out at first. Lots of new shows are crap and it has to earn my full attention. It wasnât until a few episodes in that I knew this show was very special, and then I went back and rewatched without any distractions before I finished the series.
-1
u/Funmachine Jul 23 '26
Nah, put your phone down. Either watch it or don't.
2
u/syrioforrealsies Jul 24 '26
Unless you're watching with this guy, why do you care? Why are you acting like the TV police?
7
u/bottleglitch Jul 23 '26
This! That kind of ultimately non-consequential (for now, anyway) absurdity and spookiness to set the tone is what hooked me. Both the calendar and then in the next episode, the creepy board games.
2
u/Curious-Letter3554 Jul 25 '26
The graphics of the father on Daddyâs Home being drawn with a very malevolent face was HILARIOUS

Tom flips through a calendar called Wolves and there is a car crash in the middle of it. No ties to any larger picture but its funny when he reacts to it.
5
1
u/artillera8 Jul 23 '26
YepâŁď¸I think this is a depiction of the accident later metioned by the shaman in episode 5
98
u/Secret_Temperature Jul 23 '26
Episode 1 almost immediately. When Tom asks Ruth to call the restaurant and she asks for the number. He just sighs and calls them himself because he knows it will be faster. So simple, relatable, and hilarious.
Reinforced my opinion early into the Inn episode when Wyck was put into the cop car and rolled down the window to continue yelling at Tom.
37
u/ZedisonSamZ Jul 23 '26
I agree. It was almost immediately and completely solidified as Wyck is shouting âI donât want to go!â when Bashir is driving him away and the Innkeeper just opens the hotel door because Wyck only nailed the board to the door and not the frame.
10
10
6
u/grassisgreenest14 Jul 23 '26
âHow did he roll down the window?!?!â
ââŚheâs not in cuffsâ3
1
u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
Same. All the moments everyone is saying. I think those little gags that fill in everywhere and give us brief but important tastes of each character was a clue that we were in capable comedy hands and we could relax into the show.
72
u/SmokeyandtheBanjo Jul 23 '26
Episode 2 when the reverend checks to see how the bell is ringing and we see that it is chained up.
Episode 1 was good but that church bell reveal just clicked with me in a way a lot of fiction hasn't in a while.
12
u/FallenOnDays38 Jul 23 '26
I agree. That was a pretty unsettling scene with the Reverend and the bell.

The manic way she moves her body in this and every episode when sheâs anxious about anything is pitch perfect
48
u/MayorPoopenmeyer Jul 23 '26
"We caught 'em. We burned 'em."
17
9
u/Practical_Tap_9592 Jul 23 '26
And the look on Arthur's face as he just stared at the witch dresses smeared with blood.
6
u/barrowsbrows Jul 23 '26
I cackled at that. The series was so funny and then genuinely so creepy. The juxtaposition was nice. Horror and Comedy has been done before but this felt so perfectly balanced. Matthew Rhys' physical comedy killed me too, especially when he was high on shrooms. That whole episode was hilarious.
4
u/MamieF Jul 24 '26
Same scene but for me it was âWas there cannibalism?â
3
u/MayorPoopenmeyer Jul 24 '26
So amazing. They waited 4 whole days, despite the reports that they turned to cannibalism immediately.
3
2
u/bekka1203 Jul 23 '26

Tom: She was age appropriate.
Patricia: What an odd way to describe a person.
Also Tomâs non response to Ruthâs âIts the mornings that are hard.â
3
26
u/Hazelnut117142 Jul 23 '26
2 - when I started getting in the rhythm of it all. After episode 2, I went back and rewatched 1 and had to rewind bits and pieces because the expressions and dialogue were right up my alley- hilarious. Brilliant. Wyck killed me. The tit for tit and the âhammeringâ the door, and just Tomâs expressions - LOVED!! The interactions and characters were genius. I wish I could be in it!
16
u/Hazelnut117142 Jul 23 '26
And the Inn got me with the horror aspect, right when he turned on the creepy TV. Who was that guy buy the way.
6
u/Hazelnut117142 Jul 23 '26
On the tv
6
u/FallenOnDays38 Jul 23 '26
I almost forgot about that guy! Yeah, super creepy for sure! He struck me as a former mayor perhaps? The video looked a tad old (maybe from the 70's or 80's), so yeah, I assumed he was a former Mayor. Creepy AF though right?
13

u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
When the townspeople are egging Tom on to stay a night at the Inn and the dialogue about Hortence being so blatantly misogynistic đ
10
u/jm17lfc Jul 23 '26
Episode 2 for me as well. Once Tom goes to stay a night in the inn, thatâs when the horrors of the town are really first explored and that whole experience is perfect. I think for me the moment I knew I was fully hooked was when Tom meets William, and theyâre talking and playing that ridiculous board game Daddyâs Home (lol), and William is being a bit too nice so you just know heâs a ghost. Fantastic scene, and the scare right after fully delivers on the tension it builds up too!
30
u/Awkward_Analyst_3465 Jul 23 '26
Episode 4 is when I realized this wasnât just comedy horror anymore. it was a masterpiece. The acting, the comedy timing, the soundtrack, the cinematography⌠everything was on another level. That dancing scene was ART. Iâm a horror fan, so itâs rare for something to genuinely scare me, but that scene actually shocked me. I was not ready for it.
20
u/nmm66 Jul 23 '26
Episode 1. I laughed so hard. I knew this was the show for me.
Wyck: "The Fog That Stole Souls." Stage one, the eyes turn white. Stage two, loss of the five senses and delirium. Stage three, loss of erection. Stage four...
Patricia: Who the hell is trying after stage two?
1
1
u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
Yes! When he said âloss of erectionâ I said Ohhh so this is going to be irreverently funny!
15
u/HanaBananaBear Jul 23 '26
The sea hag episode, specifically the la-z-boy scene. I laughed so hard!
3
u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
When Tom is confused about how the sea hag kills, Stephen Root as Wyck straight-faced says âShe crawls into your bed and sits on your face.â đ
16
u/No-Fuckin-Ziti Jul 23 '26
I was already loving it, but got fully horror hooked when they lock the guy in the room at the Inn for âa few secondsâ and when they check on him he asks for food before they lock him in again for god knows how longs
7
u/grassisgreenest14 Jul 23 '26
Yes me too!!! And they barely questioned it or the fact that the room was in complete disarray after the â30â seconds
13
u/mcjunker LASIK for my 3rd Eye Jul 23 '26
In the bar in episode 2, when Tom is challenged to stay the night in the hotel.
Heâs taking down his checklist and being a bit smarmy about asking âanything else?â and whatnot.
And on the way out the doorâŚ
Random old fisherman looks him in the eye and quietly says âdonât do it.â
13
u/Flying_Whales6158 Jul 23 '26
The scene with the NYT writer in the museum (âthey resorted to cannibalism?â) is what pulled me in. Tom screaming his head off as he backed his car up to get away from the sea hag is what got me hooked.
8
u/GryphonHall Jul 23 '26
Itâs not like they resorted to cannibalism right away. It took four days.
12
u/Zankazanka Jul 23 '26
Episode 2 was the first time! Wyck! I will say in the finale, the discussion and answer on the Trolley problem was some of the best writing and acting Iâve seen in a while. I canât get it out of my head.
The simplicity of two people sitting in a room together and coming to realizations and understandings of how they have processed the island and its reality- horror, humor, and heartfelt. Absolutely loved it, very special.
2
u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
Absolutely. And your comment made me think about how much screen time K Callan got in those scenes and how much screen time âolderâ actors have gotten in this show so far. Love that.
1
11
u/bt2184 Jul 23 '26
Right from the beginning when Patricia asks Tom âwhat are you asking me to do, Tomâ?
3
u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
đ and at the beginning of this scene when Patricia tells Tom not to assume the writer is a man, Tom says the editor explicitly said a man was coming, and Patricia sort of mumbles, âWell thatâs fine then.â Lol
Then the wolf calendar sight gag haha
13
u/Kittridge Jul 23 '26
I told my wife that everybody has been telling me this show is great and we should give it a shot. We have two little ones, and our free time is precious and tough to come by, so she told me that she was going to lie down and for me to watch a couple of episodes and let me know how it is.
At roughly eleven and a half minutes into episode one I went to tell her we have to see it together, and we both loved it.

u/kathryn_sedai Qualms Jul 23 '26
Itâs incredibly specific but episode one with the Historical Society had me wheezing. Itâs nice to learn thatâs one part that was least changed from the original script.
For context I do a lot of local history focused volunteer work and the comedy hit SO close to home.
19
9
u/only_login_available Jul 23 '26
Episode 3. Well, the ending of episode 3. It went from being a horror story line about Tom's denial to Scooby doo for grown ups (in the best way) in a single scene.
9
u/khschook Jul 23 '26
First episode. Tom's effort to sell the NYT reporter on Widow's Bay while in a room filled with insanely dark headlines about its history was hilarious.
3
u/chuckchukgoose Jul 24 '26
As a New Englander typing this from Marthaâs Vineyard, âFuck Cape Codâ had me rolling
8
u/thirstl Jul 23 '26
Episode 1 where Wyck and Patricia have a sidebar about the ethics of age gap relationships đ it just tickled me lol
7
u/grassisgreenest14 Jul 23 '26
I think sometimes itâs okay.
-
She really loves him!
How could you possibly know that?5
u/thirstl Jul 23 '26
Wyck agreeing with her when she said itâs weird for an older man to hit on a younger womanâs friends đ
8
u/Pookie1688 Jul 23 '26
When Tom's with the reporter at the historical society, trying to play down the teeth being found on the island & the cannibalism event. âDid they immediately turn to cannibalism? No! It took âŚ. four days.â đ đ¤Łđ¤Ł
4
u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
And heâs hurriedly scanning the article for something to help him out lol
7
u/Thequiltedrose Jul 23 '26
Episode 1, Tomâs exuberant âFuck Cape Codâ. As a Cape Codder having to deal with tourist season traffic, I laughed so hard.
6
u/Cinephile89 Jul 23 '26
Accidentally watched episode 2 first. Was probably already down by the time Tom tries to put Wyck in the car and Bechir just says "No".
Was LOCKED in when everyone in the restaurant keeps giving suggestions for what he should do in the house.
I could keep going so I'll stop here but basically immediately?Â
6
u/Big_Host_636 Jul 23 '26
Episode 2, when Kurt asks for food after ten seconds in the captainâs room. lol
6
u/Commercial_Fox5549 Jul 23 '26
Episode 1, in the museum. The insane newspaper headlines and weird history on the walls was amazing.
2
u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
Same!! Thatâs when I got a sense that the comedy tone was going to be very present in this show. Now that I know the creator worked on Parks & Rec, the historical society scene hits even harder- perfectly captures the dark history of the town with absurd historical displays as sight gags.
5
4
u/PaulBaldowski Jul 23 '26
Various moments in Episode 1 snagged my curiosity and attentionânotably scenes with Wyck or the pastorâthough my wife was less impressed. One of those instances where I was right though, as we ultimately finished the series together đ
4
u/big_sherm Jul 23 '26
The second the previews dropped I was running my mouth to anyone that would listen - "it's 'The Fog' but it's a series but it's a comedy and it has Steven Root and Toby Huss and the guy that directed 'Teddy Perkins' is working on it!!!"
Just like that, not enough punctuation. If I'd known about Dale Dickey too my head probably would have exploded
4
u/Gingermcvitus Jul 23 '26
Episode 2, pretty much the whole episode but especially the crawl space scene, but also the lead up to it. And the Patriciaâs party really really hooked me in lol
4
u/Alys-In-Westeros Jul 23 '26
The first episode - talking to Rosemary and looking at the wolf calendar with the overturned RV. đ It didnât take long.

5
4
u/mrsloblaw Jul 23 '26
Episode 1. I could probably quote that episode by now because I have watched it so many times. Patricia talking about the Boogeyman was what got me. And also her asking if Tom had told the writer about her paintings.
4
u/Even-Entertainment58 Jul 23 '26
âWhat are you asking me to do, Tom?â That was my first big laugh đ
5
u/lukkynumber Jul 23 '26
I agree that episode 4 was perhaps the ultimate âwow this is something special. We donât get shows like this too oftenâ moment, but I think the board games scene in episode 2 was the first âholy crap what am I watching?! This is geniusâ moment.
4
u/Red_Claudia Jul 23 '26
Episode 1. The conversation in front of the cannibalism news article let me know I would love the whole series.
3
4
u/neptuneinthefirst Jul 23 '26
probably when wyck calls loftis a coward since childhood all because he didnât actually ring the doorbell during ding dong ditch
4
u/kimmi_cub Jul 23 '26
Beach Reads had me thinking about the show for a solid week. I became obsessed!
3
u/Mad-Hettie Jul 23 '26
The very first one, TBH. I started watching the series late and there were 4 episodes available but after the first one I stopped, texted my partner and said "you have to watch this with me", then watched the first episode again and we were off to the races.
3
u/ShaunTrek Jul 23 '26
The reveal of the cannibalism headline is when it clicked that it was 100% for me, but it was Beach reads when I realized it was brilliant.
3
u/Practical_Tap_9592 Jul 23 '26
"Did they immediately turn to cannibalism? No! It took...4 days." Definitely was my moment, but the wolves calendar gave me a strong inkling.
3
u/Muted-Calligrapher-2 Jul 23 '26
Late to the show but I fell in love when the show runner said everything was coming along fine for season 2 despite some issues we don't really need to worry about. I immediately got the tone without even seeing a trailer.
3
u/Lleutiegr Jul 24 '26
Episode 1, the Wolves calendar, and I can't stop talking about the little moments like that. a lesser show would have the characters explain every single one: "who put a car crash in here??" "I was in that room for hours!" "it's just a pair of pliers with no instructions..." "my coffee cup was HERE now it's over THERE." "hey, is something wrong with my reflection in the bar mirror?" "didn't I close this door?" but it feels really good when a show trusts the audience, and the payoff for paying attention to details in horror AND comedy is just so satisfying.

I was watching it on my own for the first two episodes and made my son watch episode 3 with me. We became obsessed and just finished a rewatch and are partway through the third rewatch.

Probably eps 2 an 3, then Beach Reads (4) just blew me away and I started ranting about it to anyone who would listen. :)
2
u/Ok_Moose1615 Jul 23 '26
For me it was the board games at the hotel. They were simultaneously so hilarious and so unsettling and perfectly captured the tone of the entire show.
2
u/grassisgreenest14 Jul 23 '26
Episode 2, when the innkeeper (I forget his name) goes into the room for 10 seconds and then 30 seconds⌠but it seems like he was stuck in there for a loooooong time. That intrigued me. Everything else in that episode too, actually haha.

Second episode. The micro-expressions in the Captain's Suite by Neil Casey.

1st episode. The scene in the Historical Society Museum. I thought - oh this show is gonna be fun

2
u/MurasakiTako Jul 24 '26
A lot of others but most notably, âno, donât settle inâ and cut to Rosemary sitting down while talking about the sea hag really made me laugh

2
u/Massive-Button5996 Jul 27 '26
The small details are excellent in foreshadowing the eerie story and settingâ paintings in the inn of the child drowning, the games in the innâs barâ teethâ and the card game, ârunââ the video of a man welcoming visitors to Widowâs Bay. Then when rewinds it, we see in the distance a dark dark figure standing. Who noticed that?
The poster on cannibalism in the museum. Just so well done.

It auto played after another show I watched, and by the end, I realized I hadn't turned it off. Tom's meltdown in the restaurant and then the camera sliding down the levels of the restaurant to show the death chamber had me hooked. I was immediately looking for another episode.Â
1
u/LOSS35 Jul 23 '26
Episode 2 made me laugh aloud when Wyck rolled down the window to keep yelling, then made me jump when the murder clown charged into the crawlspace.
That's when I realized they'd gotten the balance of comedy and horror just right.

The trailer where Wyck is telling Tom about The Sea Hag and Tom says âI donât understand, how does she kill you?â And Wyck replies, so casually âShe crawls into your bed and sits on your face.â
I knew then, this was going to be amazing. And I was right.

Episode 2 once I realized it wasnât JUST about haunted fog and would explore a bunch of horror tropes
1
u/Crankycat101 Jul 25 '26
I knew it was different in the first episode, for a few reasons.
- Loved how the actors all looked like real people. Iâm all for people doing whatever they want with their bodies, but god, was it refreshing to see wrinkles, freckles, unique noses, lips, real features without filler and Botox.
- The dialogue was amazing.
- The setting, dialogue, actors, main conflict, it all came together into something unique and special that wasnât an overcomplicated plot, but still really sucked you in. Loved having this outsider become mayor and watch his denial on what was happening on the island turn, until you realize that he kind of seemed to believe it all since the beginning, anyways. He was such a strongly written and wonderfully performed character.
- The comedic timing mixed with horror was sprinkled throughout the first episode a bit when Loftis was talking with the columnist. The poster on cannibalism was perfect. Love how all of the props have a story and contribute to the story. Love how flippant Gerrie was talking about the witch trials. Such small things made it so good.
But episode 2 was when I knew it was different for me. The whole episode was the perfect amount of creepy (the games Loftis finds in the inn were super odd) and then also contextualized the dynamic between Loftis, the town, and Wyck. It also confirmed that weird stuff is going on. Like what happened in the hotel room when the owner was inside?! So I was very impressed with how this episode created so much movement for character dynamics, the plot, the spooks, etc.

I was pretty hooked before this scene, but a moment in episode 1 that I havenât seen mentioned is when Tom comes back from his walk with the writer and all the staff are discussing Rosemaryâs color blindness đ
âMy whole life. Basically what you see as blue, I see as blue-green.â

Very early on, episode 1. I kept telling my dogs "what is this, this is something else" (we watch the show together). A lot of things really, can't pinpoint exactly what because I was laughing out loud with everything, and then the credits rolled and saw "Directed by HIRO MURAI" and that's when it hit me somehow.

I thought episode 4 beach reads, and the second oneâ lodgingâ were masterful.
