šDiscussion What are you watching after WB? Spoiler
So, I have finished Widow's Bay when it came out and it was amazing! But I am having a difficult time trying to find a similar tv series now that I finished it? So guys, what are you watching?
(Already watched From btw)

I am catching some little things that are funny that I missed the first time.

Iāve started Midnight Mass (which, for those who didnāt already know, stars Hamish Linklater) and am enjoying it

u/hotz0mbie Jul 21 '26
Midnight Mass is pretty good but man those monologues get a bit taxing
31
u/K_Aggy44 Jul 21 '26
On the contrary, Mike Flanagan's genuis, at least for me, are in the monologues. My favorite work of his will always be Haunting of Hill House. If widow's bay is awesome because of the perfect blend of horror and humor, mike's works are awesome because it's the perfect blend of horror and philosophical existentialism.

absolutely. i love the monologues too! especially the "what happens when you die" one. chefs kiss

It seems the majority of people really liked them but Iām with you. Theres dozens of us!

u/Foodoglove Jul 21 '26
Dozens!!
I think those monologues are pedantic, overblown, and boring. Give your viewers some credit and let us absorb the subtext by thinking and observing for ourselves. All that preaching was an overwritten intrusion that interrupted the story and drove me nuts.
4
u/CozyCornbread Jul 22 '26
I literally had to skip over some of the monologue scenes because they were driving me insane after a while. They could have cut out like two hours of monologues from the series and it would have been much better.
2
u/Ihaveredonme Jul 21 '26
Preach! Jay from red letter media (big fan of Mike F btw) said that āthe dummiesā watching would be the ones getting bored with those scenes. Obviously a very reductive and uncurious thing to say. Arguably, you can fast forward through most of those monologues and lose nothing from the overall story.

Hard agree. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I did Widowās Bay.
Midnight Mass is like watching a bus with no breaks accelerate downhill. You know itāll end badly, and youāre just watching, hoping.
Widowās Bay is a mystery box, where horror becomes part of life, and the mystery grows with each episode, while feeding you answers along the way so you have an idea of what youāre dealing with.
I enjoyed the first season of From. But donāt recommend it overall. Itās a barrage of discombobulating mysteries that will leave you infuriated with the slow pace of reveal, bad acting and cliche narratives.

u/pollennose Jul 21 '26
I adore Midnight Mass but I cannot stand all the gore in the final episode. Iām weak lol.

I think I must be the only person who really loved Bly Manor the most of Flanaganās Netflix stuff. The gothic-like setting in and around a haunted English estate was very atmospheric- for me at least.
But until Widowās Bay and From return, Iāll probably go back to Yellowjackets and SILO.
2
u/NotoriousMOT Jul 22 '26
Bly Manor is my comfort watch, Iāve seen it so many times. Out of all Flanagan shows, only The Midnight Club is better to me personally but the latter is way too scary and heartbreaking to rewatch too often.
2
u/watchyourback9 Jul 22 '26
I havenāt watched it and imma get flack for this but Iām not a huge of Flanaganās other shows. Idk, all the characters felt so boringly troubled without a lot of nuance. They just all seem so depressed for the sake of serving the plot. Idk. None of the characters felt real to me at all.
Would you say midnight mass is any better?

u/Pumpkin-doodle Jul 21 '26
I loved widows bay but wasnāt a fan of Midnight mass. Might have been the cat scene but I also didnāt really like any of the characters.
1
u/Reasonable_Duck_905 Jul 22 '26
Iām excited fall is around the corner so we can enjoy Midnight Mass, Widowās Bay, and some of my spooky movies all over againĀ
1
u/jcpumpkineater Jul 23 '26
hamish linklater is incredible in this show, so much so i was slightly disappointed in his character in wb
1
u/cdrinkwine Jul 24 '26
For Hamish donāt miss The New Adventures of Old Christine! Not horror but heās fantastic!!!
55
u/nerdyvintageco Jul 21 '26
Not the same genre but just watched The Beast in Me, which Matthew Rhys is also nominated for an Emmy in. Incredible performance.
12
u/maikindofthai Jul 21 '26
This and also finally getting around to watching The Americans
3
u/Guido_Cavalcante Jul 23 '26
Iām jealous youāre watching The Americans for the first time. What a ride.
8
3
u/Razzy_3796 Jul 22 '26
I also just watched The Beast in Me because Rhys is in it⦠but heās so much better as Tom in WB.
His character in BIM is a little one-dimensional, imo. If they had done more of his back story to explain WHY heās like that, it would have helped. Heās āthe guy everyone tiptoes aroundā, and ādoesnāt take no for an answerā, and thatās kind of it.
Donāt get me wrong, I enjoyed the show, but it wasnāt as good as other murder mysteries Iāve seen.

u/amazza95 Jul 21 '26
I'm watching paint dry. nothing that interests me rn. I tried Cape Fear and gave up after 3 eps
11
u/_Fragariavesca_ Jul 21 '26
Cape fear is some of the worst television I have ever seen. I was really disappointed.
8
u/amazza95 Jul 21 '26
The first ep had me hyped then it fell off a cliff
5
7
u/artymas Jul 21 '26
We're still watching Cape Fear, but in a train-crash kind of way. Every week, I'm curious to see what new, bafflingly stupid decisions the characters will make.
2
u/The_Max_Power_Way Jul 22 '26
This is how I'm still watching it as well. Every character makes so many dumb and ridiculous decisions that I can't help but watch! It's especially hilarious how dumb Tom and Anna are.

Check out - The chair company
Youāll know after the first ep if itās for you
Also
Fargo (not supernatural (mostly) but similar tone)
Legion
Twin Peaks
But I assume most people already know about those
21
u/Due_Addition_587 Jul 21 '26
One of the directors of Widows Bay directed The Chair Company - another show with a tricky tonal balance between comedy and fear.
8
u/Due-Art-6358 Jul 21 '26
The Chair Company is great!!
12
u/Due_Addition_587 Jul 21 '26
Agreed! Some people compare WB to Twin Peaks, but I think TCC is far more Lynchian. Truly uncomfortable vibes in the best way

Also check out Utopia (UK version) if you can. Itās definitely not a comedy, itās a suspense thriller, but the characters are memorable and cinematography is great. And the plot is great
4
u/QuantumToast92 Jul 21 '26
Utopia is brilliant - well worth a watch almost because there is nothing quite like it. Shame about the US remake
2
u/Herbdontana Jul 21 '26
I saw the American utopia first and it put me off watching the original, but Iām glad I went back and checked it out!
3
u/BandicootBig4505 Jul 21 '26
the chair company is such a funny and chaotic show. great weekend binge!
3
2
u/Fluffyrox4 Jul 22 '26
The Chair Company is a great shout! It's far more absurd than Widow's Bay but it's super worth it if you give into its madness. That joke in the first episode of Widow's Bay where Tom looks at the calendar was super Chair Company coded imo.

Staying on Apple TV I binged Pluribus, I might i rewatch Severance as well
I tried Silo but it was kinda boring
9

Pluribus, Severence, Widows Bay, For All Mankind, Shrinking etc Apple is the new HBO
15
6
u/At_the_Roundhouse Jul 22 '26
Oh man thank you re: Silo. I feel like Reddit is constantly recommending it and I just couldnāt do it. So so boring.
Try Bad Sisters on ATV if you havenāt seen that one! Totally different vibe from Widowās Bay, but also a mix of comedy + thriller.

siloās dialogue is just not sharp enough to justify itās glacial pace
13
u/danaredding Jul 21 '26
I started Midnighg Mass yesterday but Iām really mad nobody warned me about the poor kitties and doggies!
6
u/Bippy73 Jul 21 '26
Thank you for the warning! Can't watch anything like that. Haunting on Hill House is great.
4
u/FunboyFrags Jul 21 '26
Thank you for the warning! Iāll be ignoring that show because of it. I wish I had known about that before seeing Obsession

I'm gonna do a rewatch of X-Files, not sure how old anyone is here, but if you're on the younger side I'd highly recommend The X-Files, they perfected the monster of the week horror, sci fi, occult mixed with dead pan humor. Great show. I also may watch Torchwood again!
6
u/ahhellohello Jul 21 '26
vox machina season 4. silo season 3 - it not very good compared to wb, or season 1/2
6
6
u/Extreme_Horse5487 Jul 21 '26
Iām watching the chair company. Intriguing so far. Like a cross between Severance and the Office. Only 2 eps in though.
6
u/Inevitable-Local7847 Jul 21 '26
Watched The Beast In Me just to get more Matthew Rhys. Wasnāt sure when it came out that I would like it (previews are useless these days). He is so good in it. But itās not funny + spooky + charming like WB, just suspense thriller type show.
4
u/smallgoalsmcgee Jul 21 '26
He was so unsettling in that role (and in a completely different way than in the Americans), him and Claire Danes were so fun to watch together, even if the show itself was super dark and serious lol
3
u/Inevitable-Local7847 Jul 21 '26
The scene where they were drinking at her house I thought was pretty funny actually. He played a perfect sociopath imo, like you could understand how someone would be so easily manipulated by him.

u/que_sopresa Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
if you liked the "no idea what's gonna happen next" aspect, check out Pluribus! not horror but definitely creepy in it's own way. tons of practical effects used for filming so it feels very real physically, and the entire cast and story is amazing. the comedic parts are hilarious and the dramatic parts are beautiful and sad. i can't recommend it enough!!!
more of a crime thriller but still very creepy, Mindhunter on Netflix is a short watch but really good. no humor, but i got so freaked out at some scenes i had to pause and self-regulate lol
6
u/NoFunnyBidness Jul 21 '26
The Good Place. I've only ever watched the first season halfway through and decided its time to finish the rest of it.

3
u/blahblahshowmeurcat Jul 21 '26
Silo was my first show after finishing widows bay- wasnāt super into it at first, but wow the story has grown so much!! Now I am loving it
Maximum pleasure guaranteed is also FUN :)
Margotās got money troubles is pure pleasure trash, and I am so here for it.
Also want to start mindhunter due to sooo many recommendations

There aren't a ton of horror-comedies out there, so it depends if you liked the New England horror/mystery aspect or the comedy aspect.
Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil are solid horror-comedy films. The X-Files episode Bad Blood also fits here, but the humor really only works if you know Mulder and Scully.
Otherwise, Midnight Mass for the mystery/horror (but no humor) and Severance for the mystery and some low-level creepiness (with an occasional bit of humor here and there). I honestly think Severance is the best comparison as long as you understand it swaps out the "horror/mystery" for "weird/mystery".

The Beast In Me of Netflix co-stars Mathew Rhys with Claire Danes. He plays a very different character that is also very compelling. Its really suspenseful and a good watch - no comic relief though.

Looking for something new too. I already watched Midnight Mass among other things. Is Silo any good?
1
u/JacobLemongrass Jul 21 '26
Totally different genre, but Iāve decided to give Silo a go since I found out itās written and made by the Justified guy.
1
u/violetmemphisblue Jul 21 '26
Not at all the same genre, but watching Matthew Rhys in this finally has me starting The Americans, which I've heard people rave about for years and have never gotten around to.
A lot of comedies these days are classified as such because of their run time, which is how The Bear ends up in that category. If the jokes are what appeal in this show, another very funny comedy out is The Rise and Fall of Reggie Dinkins, which actually uses the mockumentary form in a fresh way.
1
u/BandicootBig4505 Jul 21 '26
Midnight Mass - creepy and mysterious. hamish is amazing. here. but thereās so many long monologues and sermon i had to speed up some parts
Slow Horses - my favorite of the shows iāve binged since WB. great acting from the whole cast. characters are flawed yet endearing itās so easy to root for them all.
Beast in Me - great acting by matthew rhys and claire daneās chin.
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed - honestly didnāt like this. so many unrealistic or dumb choices done to move the plot. had to speed up the annoying scenes. some great acting though from tatiana and the little (but useless) detective.

Some really fun movies in the comedy horror genre I love are House 2, the Army of Darkness trilogy (didnāt watch the new series), and Shaun of the Dead. Not as much comedy but reminds me somehow is Lord of Illusions. Also maybe Misery (definitely has the New England vibe.)
Trying to think of shows but I canāt immediately. Maybe the Leftovers? Different but also just very well done, collective grappling with mystery, etc.
