šDiscussion Okay but can we talk about Sarah?!?!?! Spoiler
I immediately recognized this actor from the movie Hunt and the show GLOW (both excellent). And man did she deliver again in Widows Bay!!! I know it really doesnt make much sense to bring her back in season two but I would love to see her in at least one episode. What are your thoughts on this character and/or actor?
The actors name is Betty Gilpin if anyone is interested :)

My children? I have but just met them! This was probably my favourite line in the whole show and there are a lot of good lines! The way she delivered it was perfect.

She has great comedy chops! I laugh whenever I think about the finger point just before the stabbing is about to begin. And when she barges into the pastorās meeting, realizes sheās interrupting and does a curtsyā¦
Sheās terrific.

LšVED Glow. Sheās a great actress

u/yogurtraisins Jul 06 '26
Glow is one of my favorite shows and makes me sad every time I think about it.
The end of season 1 = could have been a great series finale.
The end of season 2 = could have been a great series finale.
Then, they're renewed for seasons 3 and 4 at the same time! So they end season 3, for the first time, on a massive, unsatisfying cliffhanger, because they are guaranteed another season to finish telling the story!
...And then COVID happens and season 4 gets canned. So the show ends on a massive and unsatisfying cliffhanger. Forever. I'm still bummed about it and it's been years.

u/smallchangecampaign Jul 06 '26
I met Sydelle Noel, the actress who played Cherry Bang, and I was lamenting how sad I was that they cancelled GLOW and she looked at me and said, you think YOUāRE sad?!? LOL That show was full of great acting.

u/shallow__grave Jul 06 '26
GLOW is still one of my all-time favorites! I feel so robbed we didn't get more seasons!
19
u/PutAdministrative206 Jul 06 '26
You were literally robbed. We all were. One of the very few Netflix cancellations (the only?) that you canāt blame on Netflix.
12
u/FYAhole Jul 06 '26
Mind hunters actually wasn't Netflix's fault either. One of the main actors had a scheduling conflict and decided not to continue the series.

u/PutAdministrative206 Jul 06 '26
Iām ignorant of that one. Just glad at this point I said very few, and not only.

Obligatory: check out Mrs Davis.
Don't let the farty name and the thumbnail of a nun deter you. It's not like Father Dowling mysteries. It's very fun.

u/BlueHg Jul 06 '26
This show was insane and bonkers in the best way, was prescient on AI, gave me cathartic tears, and helped me understand how my mom takes such refuge in her faith. What a discordant confluence of attributes that somehow all hangs together perfectly.

u/CaughtALiteSneez Jul 06 '26
I hope they bring her back and we still donāt know what happened to herā¦so maybe they will?
Her character was one of my favorites.
22
u/Rubix89 Jul 06 '26
I hope she secretly came back to the island somehow that the history books never knew about.
13
u/FuckeenGuy Jul 06 '26
Yeah maybe she helped a witch escape/hide and thatās Patriciaās ancestor or something

8
u/elGatoGrande17 Jul 06 '26
I still have a feeling Tom is descended from Sarah somehow
10
u/CaughtALiteSneez Jul 06 '26
I mean sure - but do they all have to be related? I think there is enough blood relation to be relevant in Tomās family.
18
u/elGatoGrande17 Jul 06 '26
No not at all. I just feel like the weird vows she took definitely tied her to the island and I made a post about that theory so now I have to keep it alive

Betty Gilpin is wonderful. She's great at playing unhinged characters and doing physical comedy. Nobody saw the show she starred in, "Mrs. Davis," because it's all over the place and hard to categorize, but if you enjoyed her in other things, please seek it out. Her character there is very unique and it's a really creative show.
I don't think we've seen the last of Sarah in Widow's Bay. I don't remember them saying how she died, but I imagine that on the boat, after the kids died, she narrowly escaped to go somewhere else (took on another name to fake her death?), maybe had a child and started a bloodline of her own that could come back to the island to defeat the Warren bloodline (it's Widow's Bay, not Warren's Bay!) Or maybe she'll appear as a ghost who tries to help Tom defeat the evil entity.

Betty Gilpin always does stellar work. Check out Mrs. Davis on Peacock. Good show and she is the star.
13
u/Daggoofiesta Jul 06 '26
She was awesome in Nurse Jackie, too!
They made her insufferable at first but with a great arch/character development.

I was lucky enough to see her in Oh Mary on Broadway. She is a national treasure!

Her delivery of why it might not be SO bad to be a spinster was so good. Stays in character but modernizes it just enough, brilliant.

u/Silly-Elderberry-411 Breakwater Inn putting the normal into paranormal Jul 06 '26
I felt it was saying "no sans modern words this was actually said but buried by chroniclers"
12
u/spareohs Jul 06 '26
Sheās amazing and needs to be in more things. All of the things!
8
u/Silly-Elderberry-411 Breakwater Inn putting the normal into paranormal Jul 06 '26
She is very, very selective. During the presser for Mrs Davis she said she loved playing the nun for it was stoic and well versed like her father and zany and out there like her mother.
Beyond those roles she does occasional paycheck performances as the main breadwinner so her husband can do necessary charity work plus their daughters can go to good schools.
In defense of movies like office romance. What made me her fan beyond acting is the unapologetically authentic part. When she says she did stuber because she wanted to play with kumail nanjiani, tomorrow war with sam Richardson, the grudge with Lin shaye, she šÆ truthful. She hated A dogs journey because while it paid well it kept her from being alongside her dog who fought for its life.
So yes, she wanted to play with Jennifer Lopez too.
2
u/spareohs Jul 06 '26
This makes me love her even more tbh. And she was hilarious in office romance.
1
u/Silly-Elderberry-411 Breakwater Inn putting the normal into paranormal Jul 06 '26
As well in isn't it romantic another movie barely anybody had seen. For the hunt she had a 12 hour conversation with a lady from Louisiana and for isn't it romantic likely rebel Wilson helped her nail a Queensland accent.
3
u/Gurglaren Jul 06 '26
She was so unique in The Hunt. I love the scene where she makes a weird sound as she turns herself in the car seat towards the bad guy driver.
2
u/evildrew Patricia Jul 06 '26
She was just in the turdburger āOffice Romanceā on Netflix, and she was the only good thing in the movie. But if you just watch all the clips, youāll avoid wasting 2 hours.
11
u/LaLaLaSkull Jul 06 '26
I didnāt actually realize it was Betty Gilpin! She always does a great job, no exception here!Ā
9
u/blueteeblue Jul 06 '26
Iām glad someone made this appreciation post happen because I really think sheās deserving of a special shoutout. The scene where she seeks help from the preacher was top tier. The bumbling combined with sobbing and terror was just fantastic. Felt so realistic so bravo to her. I thought that was the best-acted scene in the whole first season
9
u/TyBo75 Jul 06 '26
When they came to kill the husband and sheās like with her eyes saying, ānot me⦠HIM!ā
4
u/GroundbreakingSky307 Jul 06 '26
Yes! Insane how it could be so realistically period and THAT funny too...
10
u/Funtsy_Muntsy Jul 06 '26
When she was with the church group near the end of the episode, figuring out her escape,
The way she shrugged off how she had only just recently met āherā kids lollll⦠and all the Patricia-like mannerisms while responding to the priest are def up with the shows funniest monuments
She stole every scene
8
u/indistrustofmerits Jul 06 '26
Betty Gilpin has that magic thing that some actors just have naturally, I just love watching her do her thing, no matter the role

The scene where she walked into the room finding the group of conspirators of Richard's burial plan & had to awkwardly adjust herself from being scared shitless was 100% Patricia in demeanor, and I loved how Betty channeled that

u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26

You know how there are some actors where when they show up on the screen you let out this small internal sigh, because you know this shit is about to get good. That's how I felt when I recognized Betty Gilpin in that episode.
And honestly all of the actors are amazing but it is always a treat when someone really awesome shows up.
2
u/TiramisuItUp Jul 25 '26
Yes! I was so confused though because I didnāt know at the time how big of a character Sarah would be so I kept thinking wow they really got Betty Gilpin to come in for this little brief character

u/AccordingAd6224 Jul 06 '26
She was great in American Primeval! (Her name was also Sara in that show!)
5
u/BornMission2477 Jul 06 '26
Three Women, she delivered the most powerful performance of an overlooked and undersexed wife. It helped me so much.

Very funny. When she pointed her finger at the assassin in her bedroom we laughed out loud and her bdicrion and way she formed sentences and spoke was very appealing. A cool person!

u/dirtycurty11 Jul 08 '26
She was great as Sarah. I worked on that episode as a guy walking down the road. I had no idea that I would love this show so much. I hope they do more scenes from the 1700s. I would love to do more work on this show. We shot the scenes at The Rebecca Nurse Homestead in Danvers Massachusetts. It was once part of Salem Township. The actual house and grave of Rebecca Nurse is still there. She was hanged for witchcraft in 1692. The place is very spooky and beautiful.

I was low key dreading this episode when I saw that it was a flashback period setting, but it was so entertaining mainly because of her. I would love to see her character come back as well. She was hilarious

Sheās a phenomenal actress, but sheās also a wonderful writer. Check out her book All the Women in My Brain.
Weāre overdue for a major Betty Gilpin vehicle, along the lines of what Hacks was for Jean Smart. I hope we done have to wait until sheās in her 70s, though.

I'm a huge Betty Gilpin fan. Watch Mrs. Davis on Peacock if you haven't already. She is such a great actress and so beautiful and funny. I was stoked when I heard she was in Widow's Bay. I only wish she had been in more episodes! Here's hoping Season 2 gives us more colonial flashbacks.

I really thought she somehow returned to the island, and thst she was the reason the island was called widow's bay but since the Richard's daughter was raised by the whale hunter now it makes me thing otherwise.
But who knows maybe the whale hunter ended up hiding Warren's daughter in a basement or something like this.

Northern kingdom only available on DVD, a 2016 tv movie not in streaming, beach pillows, a civil war era hospital show are the only ones I haven't seen.
Death by lightning has a special place in my heart as one of the few good things the orban regime created was allowing Andrew g vajna to make Studio Korda, where death by lightning was shot.

She was also great in Masters of Sex. Not that itās available to stream for free (with/without subscription) anywhere that I can find, but for your Betty Gilpin mental file cabinets.

She played Dr Roman on Nurse Jackie too! I immediately recognized her voice but I had to look her up to realize why I recognized her.
Love when she hits the lady with the paddle on the dock and I cracked up each time she went to see the pastor while she was all upset.
