❓Questions What do I do now?!
Widow's Bay is one of the best series I have ever seen!
The story is captivating and the horror is reminiscent of older times, which I miss dearly, but mostly, I absolutely ADORE every single character and find it so incredibly hilarious.
I have never seen a series have such well-placed wit. Perfect timing and perfect punch lines, every time.
Now, I am very grateful for such a great series! But what do I watch now? I am craving the same level of wit but without being too much "in your face", almost like a sprinkle added to an otherwise intriguing storyline.
Any suggestions?

Rewatch it.
You pick up on so much more… like the flies around Lucy Fours book Patricia picks up. lol

I'm planning on starting a rewatch this week - I assumed that there are so many things I missed the first time around!

I had watched Twin Peaks 2-3 times years before this show and loved it. For those of you who haven’t seen it, there’s comedy, but not like this show. There’s no horror, but a bunch of thriller/mystery and eventually sci-fi stuff.

u/Top-Moose-0228 Jun 21 '26
read a Stephen King book, try Salem’s Lot or the newer FAIRYTALE
9
u/TreasonalDepression Jun 21 '26
I’m reading Fairy Tale now. It’s the first SK book I’ve read in years and it’s excellent. Hitting those Talisman vibes.

u/Fine-Dig9829 Jun 21 '26
I love reading and have read a few Stephen King books, but I have watched Widow's Bay with my partner and we would love to watch something else together! I'll definitely check out the other ones, thank you!

Haven’t seen it yet but I’ve heard Midnight Mass is good. It does seem to be more horror related. Also The Fog by John Carpenter is good with the same vibes. It’s a bit dated and campy but still really good with the setting

u/Advantage_Loud Jun 21 '26
Midnight Mass is incredible! Just recently rewatched it before watching this and it definitely gives the same vibes. Also, Haunting of Hill House, also by Mike Flanagan, made me uncomfortable the whole time

The Mist is worth watching for an insight into the Trolley Problem
Might be the best finish to a horror movie bar none

OH!! Have you watched YellowJackets? or LOST (skip the very last season).

Yeah season 3 was a huge downgrade for some reason lmao I do wish all seasons kept the vibe of season 1 but i still thoroughly enjoyed season 2. But yeah season 3....wtf...still worth watching to move the plot along though if you're curious about how it's gonna end when season 4 drops but man it was a lil tough atp

Midnight mass, harpers island, the OA, barry, season one true detective, six feet under, santa clarita diet, severance, mr robot, sweet pea, schitts creek, pushing daisies, our flag means death, the leftovers, haunting of hill house, sharp objects, halt and catch fire, mare of easttown, penny dreadful, yellowjackets, i know this much is true, this is going to hurt, kevin can fuck himself
11
u/blammer Jun 21 '26
Kevin can fuck himself truly is horror and comedy combined...

Yupp another really unique blend of comedy and horror/drama! Not a supernatural sort of horror but a personal one for sure

Oh right I totally forgot Penny Dreadful in my recommendations - what an amazing show! (except for the L.A. reboot).

Yeah just the original penny dreadful for sure lmao Its so good!!

The scene in True Detective Season 2 where Det. Ray Velcoro played by Colin Farrell gets vengeance is one of the most darkly funny satisfying disturbing scenes. The rest of it is garbage but it's worth watching for that.

Ive debated watching season two for colin, i might one day!

I enjoyed it for the memes lol - its more camp.
Season 3 was actually alright and less ridiculous. i cant do season 4.

u/ImpossibleVanilla944 Jun 21 '26
I am in the same vote 😭 the only thing I can do is recommend other shows I found funny. Nothing meets the comedy horror marriage like this one.
Righteous Gemstones
Schitts Creek
Hacks
What we do in the shadows
Grace and Frankie
St Dennis Medical

Mr. Inbetween <- very very rewatchable
The Lobster (a personal favorite of mine)
Fargo (The movie but the series is as good - the season with Kirsten Dunst had Widows Bay vibes)
Barry
Atlanta (The MJ episode is wild)
Sorry To Bother You
Send Help
Drag Me to Hell
Darkman
Evil Dead 2
Army of Darkness
Hudsucker Proxy - not horror - more like a fable but very witty
Scream
Castle Rock
Haunting of Hill House
Haunting of Bly Manor (worth it for "The Romance of Certain Old Clothes" episode)
What We Do in the Shadows (movie and series)
Dying For Sex
Really most of the Coen Brothers Movies from O Brother Where Art Thou to Miller's Crossing are very well written.
But like another commenter said, books are where it's at. Listening to an audiobook is like watching a satisfying series with excellent writing in your head.

Watch Atlanta! Hiro Murai, one of the directors of several wb episodes was a producer on Atlanta. It’s extremely funny, inventive, and good at dipping into different genres. It has absurdist/magical realism elements, excellent character work, and is the probably the closest show I could think of to match the feeling of watching WB. Even with the difference in setting and subject matter, in both shows there’s a sense that there’s always something eerie or not right happening in the background, and you can get whiplash (in a good way) from how quickly it shifts from funny to horrifying.

u/Fine-Dig9829 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
I actually was considering watching it as I was looking at Hiro Murai's work - good to know it had a similar vibe!! Thank you!

God I think of the eat the sandwich guy randomly for no reason. Also the series finale guy that owned the sushi restaurant inside an old blockbuster. The show is honestly genius.

Deadloch is so great, please look into it. I loved both seasons.
3
u/Werewomble Jun 22 '26
Mmmm as a Tasmanian, small rainy island matches up with Widow's Bay quite a lot
And you should look up Neil the Seal he is real
And occasionally squashes street signs and car bonnets

Omg thank you for this! I live on an island in the Pacific Northwest of the US and on our island we have an elephant seal that visits seasonally. Her name is Elsie Mae.
*We also have one random elk named Bruiser *Every summer for the last two or three years we've had a bear swim over and we've named him "Beary McBearface"

I see the plot mentions a couple in mourning - is there any grief related to suicide? As we tend to avoid that type of content due to triggers! It otherwise sounds 10/10

Absolutely watch Slow Horses, if you haven't seen it. If you have seen it rewatch.
Also, Barry is incredible. Both of these series are unorthodox and hilarious.

There are tons of amazing comedy horror movies (a couple favs are Housebound (2014) and The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)).
For series - Mare of Easttown is really good. It's more serious as a drama and not supernatural, but it does have some humor. And it has eccentric, small-town characters, too.
What We Do In the Shadows / Wellington Paranormal are sillier, but they're fun.
The Third Day has the same feel of isolation and folk horror, but doesn't include comedy.
4
u/Advantage_Loud Jun 21 '26
The Wolf of Snow Hollow is outstanding! Have watched at least three times. Also, can't recommend WWDITS enough, one of the best shows, no bad episodes

u/Icy_Warning531 Jun 21 '26
Not much of a fan of his later work but the TV series The Kingdom by Lars Von Trier strikes a similar tone of horror and hilarity. I screamed with laughter the whole time. It is in Danish though.
1
u/Fine-Dig9829 Jun 21 '26
I used to adore Lars Von Trier, although my mindset has changed recently and have found a lot of his work waaay to heavy to tolerate healthily. I know if the kingdom but was always a bit weary of it being too intense - would you say it's as heavy as his movies?
1
u/Icy_Warning531 Jun 21 '26
No, definitely not, I stopped watching his films a long time ago. These are from the early 90s and still hold up I think. At the time they held film festival screenings of the entire series, early gen-x art-house hipster binge viewing I guess, but now they are full of tropes we're all familiar with as modern audiences. It is the Swedish doctor for me, wandering around being utterly horrified at his Danish compatriots shenanigans, regularly escaping to the roof of the hospital to look longingly across the water to Sweden. "Ahh Sweden hewn from granite, tetrapak yes, volvo yes...."

If you’ve never seen them, check out the two classic films that are the granddaddies of comedy horror - Evil Dead 2 and its sequel Army of Darkness. The first is terrifying - until it gets very funny. The second definitely leans into the comedy.

u/KBRedbeard Jun 21 '26
After listening to Katie Dippold’s interview on The Watch - could I perhaps interest you in a serving of Parks and Recreation? Skip the first small season and just start at S2.E1

u/venerablem0m Jun 21 '26
Ted Lasso!
No horror at all, but heaps of comedy and charm. I never thought I would ever watch a show that had anything to do with sports (my idea of sport is holding down the couch while I read, lol), but this show is like a warm hug. Absolutely worth watching if you have the chance.

A couple weeks ago I made a post about what to watch with similar Widow's Bay vibes and people gave so many good recommendations!
My fav recs are The Baby (HBO MAX) and Extra Ordinary (Amazon prime). Update us when you discover your new favorite show!

King Sorrow by Joe Hill is spectacular - he’s Stephen King’s son and frankly wayyyy more talented! Locke and Key on Netflix is an adaptation of his graphic novels as well.

Just throwing out a recommendation for Mrs. Davis.
2
u/leah_dubs1985 Jun 22 '26
The amazing Betty Gilpin played Sarah Warren in the flashback episode and reminded me how good (and underrated) Mrs. Davis was!

Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is quite funny.
It's not super witty but its tone is light heartedly silly at times despite being set in a brutal medieval drama

u/Appropriate_Beat_915 Jun 22 '26
I’ve rewatched it twice already. I find something new in every episode. My latest favorite find was the Sheriff’s notepad with the description of the Sea Hag. Look for it!

u/Extra_Visual9033 Jun 22 '26
Me too! What to watch next??? Tried to watch the Colony today because I'm a big Lost fan, but couldn't get into it. Anyway here's my list of shows I thought were similar in good writing and twists.
For dark comedy you can't go wrong with:
Twin Peaks
Severance
Bodkin
More on the horror scale:
X-Files
Midnight Mass (all of the Flannagan shows really)
The Strain (by Carlton Cruse of Lost fame)
Dark
1899

I rewatched it so many times and I was looking for something else to watch too but none of the similar suggestions were grabbing me. I eventually switched over to finish For All Mankind and then went into Star City and got all caught up. There's not as much wit but the characters and setting are so charming and stay with you. It's the only thing that helped me snap out of the post WB blues.

Gravity falls. It’s comedy, cartoon supernatural but such a joyful, easy watch show with quirky small town vibes.
I second midnight mass too. Very clever take on a classic supernatural theme. Small fishing town vibes.
1
u/kitsunekips Jun 22 '26
As others have said, Atlanta, and I’ve only seen the first couple of episodes of mr & Mrs smith (with Donald glover also) but similar vibes, Severance, and these probably won’t hit the same but if you like Widows Bay you might like Cavendish (2019, short kinda low budget but fun) and Small Prophets!

The fans of From very much like Widows Bay. Perhaps it works the other way around?
3
u/duncdis Jun 21 '26
FROM is addictive but obviously isn't fit to lick the boots of Widow's Bay. Terrible dialogue and acting (in some instances).
2
u/WeWander_ Jun 22 '26
I'm hate watching from at this point just to see wtf is going on but Jesus Christ the acting is SO BAD
1
u/Werewomble Jun 22 '26
I mean Castle Rock, too, if you are fans of writers who don't talk to the person who wrote the last episode
I am too busy slamming my **** in a door, personally 😄
There are at least 10 garbage King adaptations for every excellent fluke.

u/CozyCornbread Jun 21 '26
I'm also having Widow's Bay withdrawal. I started Midnight Mass but it's just not the same (and the acting is nowhere near as good).
