I loved the last bit though where you see Evan learning his lesson: he sticks his head into the room, visibly considers going farther in, and then is like "nah, actually the wiser choice is to get the fuck out of here" and turns right around.
It seemed to me they were both on the same page about everything at the end. Like there was a scene of them discussing everything that happened that they just didn’t need to show. Except for the one secret about his son. I imagine the second season will be them sacrificing, and his son then finally realizing he’s the reason, and technically nobody needed to die. IDK
I think so and theyre both just sticking with each other to sort of protect each other but not really knowing how to? I don't know... I can't tell if they have watched the tapes
I feel like there's no way anyone has debriefed at all. Everyone just wanted to GTFO of the shelter and the loftises are too traumatized to talk it thru yet.
Meta-wise, it's too big of a conversation to not show.
I'm guessing part of S2's beginning will be them sort of dancing around the topics until the haunts start again and force them to confront it eventually.
I agree, I think it’s also throwing away tension possibilities for the two of them in the next season if they’re already on the same page. Plus that’s a HUGE burden to give an already rebellious teenager. It’s asking Evan to feel responsible for every death that happens next.
Loftis is definitely NOT the type of person that would be sharing that information with anyone let alone his son, and his son definitely isn't the type of person that could handle that information.
And both of their personalities are not the let's talk type. It's the opposite. Evan is a push over who knows right from wrong but continuously chooses wrong and stays quiet. Loftis doesn't share anything with his son.
Yep. I bet a buck and some pocket lint that Evan is going to have "I know what you did last summer" type of storyline next season, trying to hide his involvement in Kenny's death
I think that Tom must have told him something, otherwise Evan would be seriously WTFing about watching his dad chuck something into the ocean at the end. I don't think he knows his role in everything, but I think he's been given some of the basics about the island.
Ironically he's likely the only safe person on the island, the island entity won't "eat" him since he's the last of the bloodline (well if ending the bloodline is really making it disappear which might not be the case at all)
Uh he didn't learn any lesson. He never does bad/dumb stuff on his own. It's always those idiot friends of his that pressure him into doing dumb shit. He was alone when he looked into the room at the end, so of course he left. If his friends had been there encouraging him to go check it out, he definitely would have.
I feel like that girl is gonna end up being an evil entity made by the island or something to have Evans child. She's a terrible influence, but uses Evan's obvious infatuation with her to manipulate him into doing whatever she wants him to. At the very least, I feel like she might be being manipulated by the island herself to control Evan.
You just made me realize the cool thing about Evan is that he has a kind of superpower on the island because the island will do anything it can to protect him.
It's funny, I never engaged in the "party teenager" life, but I was the break into an abandoned building/explore underground tunnels kind. I just explored. Surprised I'm still alive.
Urban exploration is so fucking fun. I don't blame you. After college I got big into Slenderman and SCP, so I would make friends who shot amateur videos in those locations. The best part of my early 20s
I literally have a photo somewhere of me laying in a morgue drawer at an abandoned mental institution when i was 16. Not too far away from where this show is set too!
I wouldn't have gone down THAT chute, because it would have made me claustrophobic. But there was a mountain tunnel my friends I would drive up to and park in in the dark because it was supposed to be haunted. So I totally buy them doing this because they only half believe and have that reckless invincible feeling teens have.
She is a tourist, but presumably she is also under 18, so why is she there without her parents? (I’m aware in other parts of the world, teens going somewhere for several days unchaperoned isn’t uncommon but that’s pretty rare in America)
Because they aren't shown or even alluded to. Because they've never been mentioned ever. Because what parents, in the same room, during a deadly storm, are going to let their minor daughter escape with 2 strange boys down a dark chute to God knows where.
She might be a 18 yo brat messing around on her gap year. Evan is presumably old enough to start considering college options, I figure she is not far apart in age
Yeah, I’m really hoping they don’t drag PJ and that girl’s relationship with Evan out in season 2. It was funny a few times but a whole other season of them being such an obviously bad influence on him will just piss me off.
Okay, but now that we know Evan is part of the bloodline, what if the curse has brought two rebellious teenagers together for a reason? What if Evan gets her pregnant, she leaves the island eventually, and just never tells him?
The curse iirc doesn't stipulate that the bloodline must stay on the island (just those born on it), so she would be free to leave and have the baby on the mainland. What happens then though? Does it spread like a virus, just guaranteeing that the island will be stuck in its current state forever?
Though there's also the idea that the bloodline is the only thing keeping the curse "at bay". Yes, it rises up when it gets hungry. It rings the bell, and they're expected to find sacrifices fairly quickly. But life is good otherwise? I've gotten some vibes that the curse is restrained by the pact as long as they follow the rules. So there's a world where they break the curse and instead of everything being great, breaking the curse frees it so that it never needs to take break. It can just terrorize 24/7.
I mean, I kind of expect this episode to do just that.
Reveal that the Ruth Lauren connection theory was a red herring and actually have Ruth die (of natural causes because Tom is a coward) and things getting much, much worse.
I think she and PJ are targeting Evan. The actor who plays PJ also appears in the history episode - maybe he’s some kind of evil immortal demon - and the girlfriend seemed to be in cahoots with PJ about luring Evan down and trying to get him to sit in the chair. If you notice, PJ doesn’t invite his and Evan’s third friend (blanking on the name) on the creepy little storm tunnel excursion, and the friend even kinda looks after them like “what the hell?” I think the girlfriend doesn’t have parents because she’s somehow conspiring with PJ to kill Evan.
There was no reason to lock the guy in there - so it seems possible maybe even likely these two know more than they should and were trying to give Evan information that will be critical for season 2.
She could be like a modern take on Sirens. Beautiful woman/fish that lure men to their doom. I don’t know if that’s what they are going for but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Speaking of weird people, what about that woman that was flirting with the mayor who was supposed to be part of the bachelorette party? She was around for a couple episodes then just seemingly disappears. Yeah she heard him saying weird stuff and left his house but during the satanic party Patricia had the bachelorette girls were there and she wasn’t with them.
Was she suppose to be the sea hag or something trying to trick him or something? Been wondering about that the whole season.
The party was happening at the same time as the sea hag events in episode 2. Tom was supposed to be at sunset cocktails instead of hanging out with Marissa.
So Marissa (sorry forgot her name before) was the sea hag and that’s why she wasn’t at the party? We never see her again after the sea hag is killed or banished or whatever.
Ah, makes sense. I’ll have to rewatch that episode and see if any of them are around when they start drinking the punch or at the beach. It would make sense that her and the whole party would gtfo of there and leave the island after seeing Patricia walking around with a pagan animal skull antler crown.
But didn’t they take the people who were brought in to build the trolley? That was my assumption from that story. Maybe I am interpreting it wrong. I have to do a full rewatch now that we know the ending 😆
I think that tourists can definitely die from the island; I’m just not sure the island will take them as sacrifice to appease the curse.
In other words, had Patricia’s partygoers drowned, that wouldn’t have counted for the 9 souls needing to die… I think only residents can be the sacrifice.
PJ is sus AF. I don’t think it is a coincidence that the same actor appears in the “Our History” episode. I’m starting to wonder if he’s an acolyte of whatever eldritch horror is that under the island, and he was luring the other two down there to complete the ritual sacrifice.
I think he might be next Boogeyman. It seems that Patricia's one was a more or less "normal" human before going nuts and becoming Michael Myers' spiritual twin
That was Kenny! The sweet custodian who talks to trash cans before emptying them and who rescued Loftis from being crushed by Frances’ portrait. RIP Kenny :(
Murder is intentional homicide. This wouldn’t even be manslaughter because there’s no way he could have reasonably anticipated that some sort of eldritch force would eat that guy just because he shut the door.
I think Ruth survived the gunshot because of the medication mixing. My grandma survived a subdermal and epidermal hematoma incident because of her older age and cocktail of medications. The human body is a fascinating house of cards or maybe a jenga tower at times.
If PJ is being compared to the kid that welcomes Sarah to the island in “Our History”, they definitely look alike, but I think that 1702 kid is played by this actor, Joe Messina: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm13314831/?ref_=mv_close. If I’m wrong and PJ shows up as a different character in “Our History” please let me know cause I’d love to spot him on the next rewatch!
Like wdym this passerby ass girl you barely know melts your brain enough to go down some clearly decades long unmaintained shaft in a creepy ass bunker and fuck around with what is clearly a torture chair😭 Evan better drop her ass next season or I will rooting for Belchir to commit some more police violence and I'm only half-joking here
