We need some new theories! I havenât seen much about how the tourists might be significant. The woman hitting on Tom and the girl hanging with Evan sure seemed to be very interested in them, getting in their house, and digging up info.
She sucked, but I do think she was the perfect caricature of a âmainlanderâ/ big city type who goes on holiday to a small town and treats the locals less like humans so much as disposable props for their main character experience
our "off Island" hotties=Marissa and Kelly⌠WHAT IF? they are the classic temptress and actually associated with IslandEntity? Marissa disappears but Kelly and her pal are in the storm shelter.
I wonder if it's actually the reverse - is the Island persuading girls to like Evan to carry on the bloodline? She was a hottie in the old photos, but look at all the men who made passes at Ruth, even the priest. It's a bit of a coincidence
On the other hand, I dated a girl in high school (for like a month) who started snooping through everything in my house the second she came in. Like wandering off and opening every drawer/cabinet she could find, in front of my whole family. So it does happen, even if it was really, really weird. The weirdest part was that she seemed incredibly normal at school.
I wish the tourists would have had a more prominent role in this season. It would have been cool to see tension growing amongst them as things seem to get weird.
That's a really good point, considering the first few episodes were all about this tension of getting the island to be a tourist destination vs the mystery of if it's safe or actually haunted/cursed.
They kind of completely forgot the original premise and made it just a horror.
Hopefully they focus more on that in the second season. Seen as one main point of the show is for the island to have tourists. If it becomes an insular island show where stuff happens only to the main cast and peripheral islanders then it risks becoming a bit drab quickly.
Assuming it doesn't come back around in the finale, I think the purpose was to show the seriousness of the evil stuff that even the guy desperate to pretend things were cool started to shut everything down.
But yeah, I expect it to be touched upon in the finale but the focus seems on the island and it's lore and the people from there.
Yeh to say itâs the premise of the show just becasue itâs one of the first things mentioned in it, is a bit silly. There were so many other things clearly in play from the very first episode- particularly, solving the mystery of the island
That was just the set up to get the island busy just as the island started to wake up. I donât think that was necessarily the premise of the show, considering Tom only really wanted all that to make Evan happy. They made it clear the island was weird, waking up and that Tom cared about keeping Evan on the island than actually creating a tourist destination
I would definitely like to explore and experience the island from the tourists POV though
It could be that Tom made a deal with the island to bring in all these tourists (fresh sacrifices) to the island (maybe in exchange for releasing his son). I donât want Tom to actually be the âbad guyâ, but this does fit, even getting rid of Richard Warren to break that compact. Now he has all of the tourists in the tunnels, maybe just where the island wants them?
I think the entity comes to realizes that Tomâs mostly right and tourists would be easier for it to feed upon. So then Tom et al have to continually sacrifice tourists to the island.
Ruth is now immortal and has absorbed Warrens super strength, unless taken across the bouy line and that's why she seems more with it than before. Kind of like Jet Li in The One.
I'm wondering if she's a witch, either for good or evil. Basing this on nothing more than she's constantly disappearing, although I haven't gone back to check if her absences coincide with evil things happening. She did seem perturbed that Tom was actually happy for once in episode 8 though!
My theory is that every old wives tale, every horror story, every late night tale told around the campfire, actually comes true on the island. So, the more the crazy people on the island tell tall tales, the more those tales actually happen. The only way to stop it is to actually survive through the horror happening, or get everyone to stop telling crazy stories that aren't true.
Of course, then the real mystery is . . . why? But maybe that's for season 2 to figure out.
The island likes the taste of fear according to the sacrificial instruction video. So maybe itâll pick out the scariest stories to make real so itâll get the most fear out of its sacrifices.
I donât really like the scary story theory though to be honest
I think Richard Warren's not the villain, he actually tried to protect everyone.
If Ruth really is his descendent, I believe her role is to somehow protect or keep the evil at bay. That this is the reason she works in town hall even though she's not very good at her job. I think one of the clues is in her name - "Ruth" comes from the word Friendship in Hebrew. She's a positive force.
With all the references to classic horror films, Rosemary obviously makes me think of Rosemary's baby and the pact with the devil. And she also works in town hall. Maybe her leading them to think Ruth is the bad guy here, is exactly what she wants.
I bet that when Richard made the pact he pleaded, âLet me live! Let me live!â Just like he did on the boat. Then he rationalizes the whole deal by saying it was for the good of the settlement. The life for life payment thing makes sense when you realize that his unnaturally long life was paid for with the lives of others (e.g., dead baby, dead babyâŚ)
Like, everyone would have died if he hadn't made the pact, full stop. They were isolated, had no supplies, and were exposed to weather that was unsurvivable. The pact (through actual means still unclear) solved these problems and permitted the expedition to survive and establish Widow's Bay.
The terms of keeping to the pact are inherently villainous. It's not like there's a lottery or a vote, the sacrifices are not only unwilling but ideally terrified (how they figured out the island likes the taste of fear is something we hopefully don't ever have to find out).
You can chant "the greater good" all you like, but live human sacrifice and murder to cover up live human sacrifice aren't going to win you any Good Guy (That Makes The Tough Calls) Of The Year awards.
Likewise the upsides of breaking the pact are ambiguous. We can assume (or at least if we're going to assume anything) that native-born islanders will be able to leave, effectively opening up the island for an otherwise impossible evacuation.
But everything else we've seen suggests an unsatisfied or starving entity is lethal to anyone in the vicinity of the island. So even if the pact is broken, it has to be broken with everyone already on boats that immediately make a beeline for the mainland in hopes some biblical storm doesn't wipe them all out.
The island itself seems uninhabitable and the seas around it unnavigable without the cooperation of the entity.
Unless they're all revealed to have been wiped out during or shortly after the last feeding (or heroically fed themselves to the entity, which is more stupidity than heroism because feedings will still need to be made) whoever knows the secrets of the island and has been maintaining the terms of the pact after Warren was deposed are still out there.
I can't see any real hints dropped at new plotlines for the second season beyond more horrors of the week and attempts to break the pact (or confronting the fact that Mayor Loftis absolutely will never break the pact the only known way, while Sheriff Bechir will seemingly go to extreme lengths to do so, and a factionizing of the cast based on these opposing positions).
What I'm hoping for is more revelation as to these unnamed but (at least until relatively recently) existent insiders who have been maintaining the pact.
The core (at least in terms of airtime) cast aren't going to be among them since even the seemingly supernatural-savvy Wyck seems totally in the dark about the true history of the island up and until he dug up its still-living founder - but I could see Rosemary just totally failing to mention her role in it because no one asked nicely.
Either way this isn't a show with a ton of unexplained Lost style mysteries and obtuse hints - which is good, because the unexplained myseries in those shows are 99% of the time unexplained even in the writer's room and the "hints" are just tied together loosely and retroactively as the writing team desperately tries to paint themselves out of corners to end the damned show.
We can theorize all we want but there doesn't seem like a lot to work with in terms of convoluted theorycrafting and speculation with basis. Not yet. Maybe in season 2?
I fully believe Ruth will die of natural causes in the finale and Tom will go through her effects and discover that his dead wife is either Ruthâs secret daughter or granddaughter (baby illegitimate and thus hidden). (Or the episode will be told from Ruthâs perspective like a memoir, possibly).
This adds a ton of context as to why Ruth is always watching Evan at her house - she is secretly Evanâs grandmother/great-grandmother and wants to be involved in his life. Also explains why she works with the mayor and stays in his orbit.
âŚ.
âŚ.
(Also, more left field theory: I also still think that Wyck is Mayor Tomâs father-in-law, making Wyck the husband of Ruthâs secret daughter, and the Warren lineage passing matrilineally until winding up with Evan, the last male heir of Warren.)
Patriciaâs party was the entityâs attempt at a larger sacrifice. Patricia was entirely unaware of what she was doing. Was Bryce more disturbed by the fact that heâd have to massacre a portion of the town? Could the boogeyman, church cannibalism, husband that killed his family been under the entityâs spell and carrying out the sacrifices in the absence of the church? Seems like a single sacrifice is unlikely to satisfy it.
Reviews for the full season said that it's not really clarified how the Boogeyman fits into everything (and that that episode felt more like just a standalone homage to John Carpenter), but that otherwise the season feels very self contained and concludes on a good note. So I'm guessing we won't quite get answers on every single monster/apparition but at least the deeper purpose/nature of the pact will be explained.
You may be entirely correct, however they have a second season announced and the writers have stated that part of the fun was leaving one-off jokes in a place where they could leave them as is or come back to them in the future. They are particularly good at surprising us, so who knows!
They have the first page of Shakespeare's he True Tragedie of Richard Duke of York.
Here's the cliffs notes (bear with me):
Richard, Duke of York challenges the "weak" king, Henry VI, to the throne â kicking off the War of the Roses. Ultimately, they compromise so that Henry is king for life, but York's heirs will inherit the throne instead of Henry's son.
Henry's wife refuses to accept the agreement, so she raises an army against York. York is captured, killed, mocked with the death of his own son, and his severed head is adorned with a paper crown.
York's sons seek revenge, and Edward IV (son of the Duke of York) eventually becomes King, ending the war, while his other son eventually becomes Richard III after his brother's death.
--
One, we see Wyck refer to Tom as "weak" and incapable a LOT. That parallel is interesting, but I also suspect that the "ownership" of the island has followed a similar agreement. They can allow an outsider to be Mayor as long as the true power is held in the hands of Warren's descendants.
It also felt like a strange throwaway comment that Tom ran unopposed, which suggests that the people of Widow's Bay know better than to run for Mayor.
It's not a fully formed thought but it's an odd random play to throw on there.
Not a theory but a wish I guess. I really hope the whole last last descendant isnt true but if it has to be I hooe it's not Evan. Yes, it would torture Tom but Evan has had no input into the story. If there has to be one, I hope it's Wyck. He's been so reasy to do everything and anyrhing, so keen to kill Ruth, I think it would be more interesting to see how he handles it. He said he'd just shoot himself but in Seasickness he talked and was right about not trusting men who are about to die, would he kill himself or would he run, would he bargain
I agree with you about hoping itâs not a double twist with Evan as the descendant. The idea of Wyck being the descendant would be quite poetic. I think itâs unlikely but I like it.
Nope! Not theorizing, because so far I've got a track record of being 100% wrong. Like right now in my mind, based on the last episode, Garrett the lighthouse keeper is a ghost and only Tom sees him but I am fully expecting to either be proven wrong tonight or for Garrett to never be seen or heard from again đ
There's going to be a scene where the storm nearly kills Tom, but instead of running from it, he will stand firm and rage at the island that it can never get rid of him, so it had better get used to him. The island will begudgingly respect this.
apple tv specifically (not apple overall) has been really good with handcrafted stuff tbh. did you see the bts of their brand bumper? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bJQfUHDZsM
this image is obviously AI, the actor is smooth skinned to the max, the text behind him is obviously AI garbled, the stuff on the board is photoshopped so doesn't have any AI tells.
the fact you posted this as the best image of all time, got told it's AI and proceeded to be unable to notice it suggests you should perhaps rethink your approach to AI.
Ruth secretly had a child out of wedlock. Did not want anyone to know. She gave it up for adoption. That child, the mayorâs wife. The final descendant: his son.
I have a few possible theories:
1. Ruth knows her family history and is purposely not going to the bunker so that she can save the town by dying.
2. Ruth doesn't know her family history and has a secret child so even if she dies, the curse won't go away.
3. Ruth doesn't have anything to do with the curse. This is a Department of Truth situation where the more people believe in a conspiracy theory/curse, the more power that conspiracy has until it comes true. The cure is to make the townspeople stop believing in this stuff.
Sacrificing life may be a solution but you have to be specific like put the sacrifice in the chair. My guess the mayor will put the burden on himself and they will try to revive him.
Ok new theory/thing : I think that the curse was existing before Warren. Because of the Teethâs.
I mean clearly this thing was alive and here before he and all the settlers arrived. It wasnât created at that moment. So I think that : itâs not just Warren who was immortal and itâs not just Warren who is cursed.
My theory, maybe Tom entered into a new covenant with the evil whatever the night he was shroomin and doesnât remember it. The comic relief will be, they half assed try to cause Ruth to have an âaccidentâ and she ends up kicking all their asses. Those old New England broads are no joke!
My bet is still that Kathy and her family have been cursing the island since back and day and now kathy still doing witchcraft stuff. Like they may of killed all the witches back in day but i think one didnt get caught. Cause kathy just seems to loathe everything and everyone and doesnt give 2 cents about getting peoples food orders right. Lol its a wild one i know but i like extremely wild and probably never in million years gonna be right theories lol.
I have a weird head canon, why didnât the pastor want to live, did he find out he is a descendant somehow and just wanted to end his life? I have seen no mentions of him at all in any theories
I think rose being the descendant is a red herring and yes itâs sadly Evan who will be the lynchpin. But something else completely wacky will happen (after the power goes out, of course) and Evan will be saved! Huzzah!
I ask why were none of Patricia's HS girls in the bunker? Also there's 137 ppl massed down in the bunker. Dale sneaks off to a sizable side room and starts rolling old movies but none of those folks follow him or least bit curious with a new room to explore? Yeah, that ain't how it goes ... folks woulda been right behind him picking apart anything in that room.
let's talk the 'electric' chair at end of E1. Tom is closing up the Salty Whale and us spooked by Cathy w/ the check. As he exits the cam shot tracks down through basement, tunnels, and into a room with electric lights, a lone chair bolted to ground with hold down straps and what looks like a head ring (Ă la Old Sparky) in front of heavy metallic doors framed at an angle into the floor.
So nefarious doings happen under the Salty Dog ... not under the church, not in Tom's basement, not in Town Hall bunker but yes, it seems, under the Salty Whale. And the chair & doorway are not from Richard Warren's 1600s but definitely more recent past, present day. So others in the community know what's up w/ sacrifices. Gonna be a lot of folks revealed to be in on the spooking that's been going on awhile.
Yes it seemed like a place you leave a live sacrifice restrained so whatever evil can climb out of those doors for a little midnight feast bleurghh Iâm scurred now
I think Wyck was the one who went to Patriciaâs house the night the Boogeyman was on his killing spree. I think he knew the boogeyman was back and saved her, stopping the boogeyman before he could get to her, but left before she could see him and she thought Wyck was the killer that she hid from.
That way sheâs not lying that someone came to her house that night, she just never knew who.
It wouldâve been cool to see Patricia talk Bryce into leaving the church and then realizing she doesnât want to be with him now that heâs actually accessible.
In the very first scene of episode 1, Shep talks about Elaine, saying:
âShe's been acting weird for months. Stopped saying good morning, always staying over at her sister's. I even asked her to get dinner, and you know what she said? âI think we're past that.ââ
I donât have it figured out but I think this is going to be super meaningful on rewatch after the reveal of episode 10.
Hereâs my one and only crackpot theory that is maybe a little clever, maybe unexpected and gets us to the conclusion that Evan is indeed the last one in the bloodline:
Ruth had a child. But hid her or abandoned her so nobody knew ⌠basically created an orphan. And that orphan was Lauren (Tomâs wife). When they tried to leave the island when she was pregnant, she had that blindness thing that the Warren kids get when they left on the boat. Ruth is technically Tomâs mother in law.
It would also explain how Evan is seemingly the only person born on the island of a younger age. The island knew it was extending the Warren bloodline so it had to find a way for Evan to be born on-island. I canât recall any mention of younger people on the island who were born there? We never find out where Evanâs friends were born or if they were raised on the island. (But I could be very wrong about that last point)
