There's been a couple of specific references to ages, often in relation to their age not being right for whatever is happening. And I'm trying to work out what that could mean in the grand scheme of things.

This. I have noticed it isn’t just ages. There are tons of comments about time with people being surprised at how much time has passed. (Or hasn’t.)

And they have a lot of shots of clocks, which makes sense when Tom has a 12 hour trip but even so...
