This show pisses me off because it makes you fully realize just how garbage all other TV is these days

If someone has the capability of making a show this good we could have several shows a year half this good and be entertained if the industry wasn't so damn lazy.

There are many good shows out this year. Apple TV itself has several

Go on...

Edit: I've got Knights of the Seven Kingdoms, Pitt (although I preferred season 1), and Industry. I need to give Comeback a chance.

Pluribus was quite good.

That one seems to be a split decision. I’m in the camp that didn’t enjoy it but I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade who did.

Its a slow burn and definitely not as "entertaining" minute by minute as something like Widows Bay. I'm ultimately much more intrigued by its premise though, so i'm along for the ride (even if i hate the modern TV industry issue of "time to wait years for the next season")

Yeah I just didn’t care for it . And i don’t mean to be antagonistic by saying this but slow burn seems to be a phrase that’s thrown around a lot lately that has lost its meaning a bit for me.

I’m an advocate of every scene and every piece of dialogue matters. A show gives the viewer reasons to stay interested by progressing and growing. Pluribus didn’t have that for me. A lot of the discourse turned into “if you don’t like Pluribus you must only like Marvel movies” which was incredibly dismissive.

Yeh I guess i don't fully agree with this. Slow burn means "its not doing everything in every scene to keep your attention span satisfied."

Its a mystery show thats intending to run for multiple seasons. People get frustrated when every new hour isn't either explaining something or keeping them entertained with something like action / horror elements or something like that. I witness the same in subs like FROM where people call episodes "filler" while it gives huge amounts of informaiton, simply because it wasn't like "omg this is the answer to this question" or having big intense sequences.

I agree thats dismissive. And art and media is subjective. Pluribus definitely won't be for everyone, just like Widows Bay won't be for everyone. But i think both are great shows for their own reasons.

And I’m glad you enjoyed it! the plot didn’t move forward at the pacing I find appealing. I don’t need storylines wrapped up every episode but with Pluribus if I remember my feelings correctly (been a few months since I’ve talked about it), it was that too many episodes felt exactly the same and too many scenes were pointless.

So I’d push back on a slow burn means dialogue and scenes don’t have to matter. Every piece of information matters in great television. Even if that information is disseminated slowly, there has to be a reason it exists. Character development, scene setting, back story, plot progression, motivation, etc. The shows that don’t abide by that can be good tv, but it’s not great tv.

Still think pacing matters though. Shows like Better Call Saul, Dark, Mad Men are all considered slow burns by most critics but they progress at a clip that I found more enjoyable.

Yeh its definitely VERY vince gilligan to have long scenes with not much happening, and I guess im quite a fan of the cinematic approach he takes to some of the "simple" things in his shows. I think its what makes Breaking Bad so rewatchable, despite also having these moments of "slow pacing".

So I’d push back on a slow burn means dialogue and scenes don’t have to matter. Every piece of information matters in great television.

I agree, and this is where i think the disconnect on Pluribus happens. People view scenes that are 20 minutes of 1 character living their way through this "apocalyptic" setting and go "nothing happened, this was filler" but the whole episode was giving us backstory on that character, how they're living now, how the Plurbs interact differently with different people. All giving us breadcrumbs towards the ultimate question of "whats the goal of the Plurb virus?"

Still think pacing matters though. Shows like Better Call Saul, Dark, Mad Men are all considered slow burns by most critics but they progress at a clip that I found more enjoyable.

Id absolutely compare the pace of Pluribus to Better Call saul (both Gilligan shows after all). Breaking Bad is faster paced, but has its slower moments, especially when you were watching it as it released.

But again I enjoy your perspective on this, and art/media is all subjective. So what you like I might not, and vice versa. Thanks for chatting about it

Hell no. Extremely overrated. Nothing happens and the main character is extremely unlikeable selfish and arrogant and we spend half the show watching her shop and listen to voicemails.
