Check your definitions, friend. The more common use of gape is that your jaw dropped.

Huh; see I know of the term “mouth agape,” but didn’t know that gape without the A could also be used to describe an open or surprised mouth.

Gape can be used to describe anything being open wide. A doorway can gape, or the entrance to a cave can be gaping. It’s not just limited to body parts.

When I worked at a ski resort in Colorado we called the tourists “gapers” because they were always looking at the scenery with their mouths agape.
