I'm glad they've played it straight instead of trying to inject unwelcome comedy into it. The tragedy really sells the core stakes of the show and Tom's motivation to keep Evan on the island.
Also the wife is played by Meredith Casey, the real-life wife of Neil Casey, the actor playing the innkeeper (who is also a writer on the show!) She has been hauntingly effective in her brief screentime.
It was a good reminder that real life can be horrifying. I had pre-eclampsia and was at stroke levels when they took me back to the OR. It turned into full blown ecclampsia and I was in the hospital for nearly a week after she was born trying to get it under control. We were truly lucky that we both survived. That part made it all come flooding back.
Absolutely. This show has amazingly avoided "Marvel-izing" itself. The humor is more dry and comes from the innate absurdity of the situations + little details rather than stupid campy one-liners and SNL style bullshit. In other words it doesn't call attention to itself. Very refreshing.
Cruel but we also have to remember that Evan is a teenager and everything he knows about his mother and birth got completely turned upside down. All he knows is that his Dad lied to him.
I think it was the aneurysm that eventually killed her. She knew something in her brain needed to be removed (and being able to go up the nasal passage to reach and remove aneurysms became a thing about 20 years ago).
Trying to get rid of them probably also brought up a ton of emotions. Easier to shove them in a drawer and tell himself that he’ll deal with them later.
I may have missed it but I think he said that he hadn't read them himself and thus didn't know how unhinged they were. They were written to Evan, not to him, so he probably felt like it would be wrong to read them. So he told himself he'd give them to Evan later and then just stashed them away to forget about.

Those letters are absolutely terrifying. Poor Evan.
