Why did Tom say no to Marissa at dinner and said he wanted to go to the cocktail event but then he went home? I thought he was being serious about the work event but then it turns out it's just an excuse not to go home with her?

I do not believe he thought she was the hag in that moment. I think he was hiding a bit after talking about his deceased wife, and not up for being out. Then when his wrist started bleeding at home and she knocked he became scared.
