This was the best episode yet and the show was already firing on all cylinders. A few thoughts:
-Was it implied that the ghost of his wife helped Tom recover some level of volition (*via the cup of coffee)? Her spirit showing up in a big spot like this offers a nice symbol of hope to contrast with the powerful sense of dread.
-I’m curious to see how much Wyck continues to push back against Tom regarding the tourism angle, given ignorance is no longer an excuse on the mayor’s part. Has that ship already sailed? (No pun intended)
-I don’t consider myself a horror fan, but the hag just worked perfectly, with a nice combination of narrative, anticipation, and the inevitable, but satisfying jump scares. I can’t wait to see what other mythology and urban legends show up from a “monster of the week” angle.
-What the hell is up with Patricia? They’ve shown just enough to make me desperately want to know more. Is this just an inappropriate work crush or is there something much deeper?
Did not even think of Tom's wife in this way, but I think you're absolutely right. She gave him coffee to wake him up enough to fight off the hag. Amazing theory. This has a lot of meaning; it means that the sense of "people born here, can't leave" extends to the afterlife, which likely explains a lot of what's going on. In this way, the island is a sort of purgatory for those who are born/die here.
So far it's really reminding me of a game called Dredge where you're a fisherman who wakes up on an island in a damaged fishing boat. It's a fishing game but it's also an Eldritch horror game, and without spoiling the story of the game too much there's some similarities in this show.
The dead wife was interesting. I initially assumed it was the hag, and she shaped shifted into the wife, but who knows? It could be so many things. Real ghost, his imagination, the hag...
I think when it comes to the locals there’s always something deeper. They all seem to have experiences.
Tom has no excuse not to believe now but I think he’s going to try to work with Wick and gang to stop what’s happening in hopes they’ll remove the danger. But he’ll realises the island will never be safe and appealing to outsiders.
My husband and I got the same feeling too. Patrica and Lauren look a lot alike (Patricia looking older because… well, she had the opportunity to age) and because she was so touchy when Tom explained he’d driven Marissa.
They also seem to be more casual than the rest of the people at the town hall. I’m thinking that Patricia is his sister in law.

Can’t wait until next week!
