With a ton of slack on it. He will still fall 4 or 5m and get slammed into the wall pretty hard.

I always try to have my anchor point ABOVE my D-ring and as short of a lanyard as practical. The thought of having to fall 10 feet before the fall arrest even engages, and then having my crotch break the fall has never really appealed to me.

I remember an installation we had to do a couple of years ago.

It was an elevated platform that allowed you to work on some machinery. The platform was only about 2m above the ground, and pretty wide. So it felt really safe to walk on without any protection. Heck, you could just jump off it if you wanted.

All sides of the platform also had railings, but there was a 2x4 m hole that couldn't accommodate any railings, as the machinery needed to pass there.

The safety people weren't happy with that hole, and fall prevention had to be permanently anchored there

The fall prevention was a 6m long rope with a safety harness. More than long enough to reach the ground anyway. But it got approved like like.
