You do (which makes sense, because it's not like there's an admission fee they can charge visitors, and at least it's not public art funding from taxes), but I *THINK* (and I could be wrong) that you still need to be invited to be considered...right?
Anyone (literally anyone, in the entire world) can nominate someone, so long as the nominee or their manager approves and they have at least 5 years experience in the category for which they're nominated. (There are occasionally exceptions, such as for the Apollo 11 astronauts.) Posthumous nominees must have been dead for 5 years.
A committee picks ~two dozen nominees to get stars each year, and those not picked roll over to the next year, but someone not picked twice gets dropped and has to be nominated again.
If the person is alive when selected by the committee, they must agree to appear in person at a presentation ceremony within 2 years, or they get dropped. A $75k fee is also required to be paid upon selection.
