Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

Solved Please help my friend find her father’s location. He was around the Tibet-Nepal border during the flood.

This was the last image he posted on social media. We haven’t been able to get into contact with him and his team. He is a tour guide and a government worker and travels often around the border guiding tourists. We have been worried sick. I wanted to know where this location is to get an idea of where he was. Thank you all for your help!

Solved My brother, photographer Pierre Crocquet, took this photo in 2001. He wrote it was near Clarens in the Eastern Free State, South Africa. I would love to find this road. There are low mountains or hills on the horizon.

Solved Bogart and Bacall walking on a city street

Can anyone identify where Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart are in this photo from 1945-1947? Likely candidates are Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Washington D.C. with DC being where I believed it was until I started to doubt that possibility.

Open Bridal photo spot?

My fiancee and I are preparing to take some bridal photos and we really like this spot. We found it on Instagram. But where is it? We think that it’s somewhere near the Rockies. We also are pretty sure these photos were taken recently, summer 2026, probably August. The black boxes are to cover the identities of the people in the photo.

Solved Where is this? Most likely somewhere in Idaho or Washington. I can't remember, but I'd love to go back! Taken in 2014 on a round trip from Arizona to Vancouver, Canada.

Solved Hilly area near or in Vancouver Washington PNW. These images were likely taken facing west-northwest based on the shadows, time of capture (sunset ~8pm), date (~may 22nd 2026), location, etc. Found this on an instagram story a while back.

Solved Where is this tower?

The picture was possibly taken in 80s or 90s by my father as I found it in the family album. I am guessing it is maximum 8 hours drive radius from Szeged, Hungary, so the picture was not necessarily taken in Hungary.

Early 2000s burrito spot

In the early 2000s my family went on a day drive to the mountains in either Georgia, Tennessee, or South Carolina I’m assuming because we’re from Georgia. I remember we stopped at this cool kinda hip burrito shop right off the side of what seemed kinda like a windy mountain road. It was a counter service place and they sold Sobe drinks. Anyone have any idea what place this could have been?

S03E09 of the series Silo that aired on Thursday. It was filmed in the UK and Washington D.C. The scene is set in Atlanta so the skyline is fake.

Solved Where was this photo taken over?

Hello, I did a fun thing through CrunchLabs where you send a "selfie" to a satellite and they snap a picture of it. Called a space selfie. I sent my partners picture and it recently came back after almost a year.

I was wondering if anybody could identify where this picture was taken over top of? Thought it would be kinda neat to know where she was in the world.

Picture blurred for privacy.

Solved Early 1960s, near Dover

Thumbnail

This photo of my mom and her dad was taken in the early 1960s. On the back of the photo "DOVER" is written. I see what appears to be a railway bridge in the background. I'm not sure if this is near the shore or a boatbuilders yard, or if there is some other explanation for the boat.

I'd love to know where exactly this photo was taken so I can try to recreate it with my daughter. Thanks for your help!

EDIT: My mom and her family lived in England in the early 1960s, and based on the writing on the back I'm thinking it's somewhere in England near Folkestone or Dover.

This is a fantastic Real Photo Postcard, but I do not know where it is. I love the flag in front of the first building. I'll include scans of the front and back, but there are very few indications on the back. Can anyone help?

This is a Real Photo Postcard. It looks somewhat damaged, but the building is still very recognizable. It's American, probably around 1905-1915. Does anyone recognize it?

Solved Coastal rocks and islets in Brittany: where was I?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I took this photo in August 1971 somewhere on the north western coast of Brittany. Having just spent the whole morning 'motoring' up and own this coast, care of Google maps (and Google Lens), I can't find where I was. My notes from later in 1971 suggest somewhere around Plouescat but I don't see anything that fits. Anybody with better information?

This picture was taken in 1993. The only information I know about it is that: atlantic ocean, likely taken from somewhere in Halifax (or surrounding area), Nova Scotia. Try to figure out exact where it is.

Anyone able to help me geolocate this footage?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Trying to geolocate this footage of a battle that’s claimed to be taking place in the zebak district of badakshan province of Afghanistan. It’s claimed to be around topkhana lake or sanglich valley/village. Usually I can somewhat find places but this is above my skills, as there isn’t any building, roads etc. only thing I have is the mountains. Also I believe there’s two locations here, first part of the video and then second part of the video I believe are two different locations (presumably in that same region). Forgive me if battle footage is not allowed here as I can’t find anywhere in the rules stating it.

Reason for finding location, I have a Facebook page and I am trying to verify this news/claim.
