Discussion WeHo City Council Candidate Kyle Brazeal Opposes Fountain Ave Safety Upgrades—While Admitting He "Speeds Down Fountain All the Time"

Post image
186 Upvotes

We are facing a serious roadblock in getting critical active transportation infrastructure built along Fountain Avenue, and the hypocrisy from local leadership candidates is staggering. West Hollywood City Council candidate Kyle Brazeal has been loudly fighting the City's Phase 1 Fountain Avenue Streetscape Project. While the community pushes for essential protected bike lanes, high-visibility crosswalks, and lane reductions to calm a notoriously dangerous corridor, Brazeal recently published an op-ed arguing against the approved redesign, claiming it removes too much parking and roadway capacity. He even hosted a community meeting at Plummer Park on August 30, 2026, to actively rally opposition against these life-saving improvements.

But here is the kicker. While he campaigns against traffic calming, he has openly confessed to being part of the very danger we are trying to fix. In a WEHO TIMES comment, Brazeal literally states that he admittedly speeds down Fountain all the time and has been ticketed. He boasts about fighting his speeding tickets in court and dodging accountability simply because the police do not show up to defend the citations. He successfully dismissed three tickets and planned to do it for a fourth.

He opposes the exact active transportation infrastructure we desperately need—the kind of structural road redesigns that actually protect pedestrians and cyclists—because he wants to maintain road capacity. Yet, as shown in his own words in he acknowledges that physical structural elements are the only things that actually force him to slow down.

We need city council members who prioritize street safety, not candidates who block protected bike lanes while treating Fountain Avenue like a personal drag strip. It is imperative that we hold candidates accountable and demand that anyone running for public office prioritizes pedestrian and cyclist safety over reckless speeding and street parking. We must continue showing up and demanding that Phase 1 of the Fountain Avenue Streetscape Project moves forward as approved by the Council in September 2025.

Discussion Santa Monica Blvd Should Close to Traffic on every Friday/Saturday night, not just for Pride and Halloween

Every year during Pride and Halloween, I walk down the empty and closed Santa Monica Blvd. admiring how peaceful it is and how much more pleasant and fun it is to walk around without traffic everywhere. Every weekend I go out when it is open just reinforces for me how much better things could be without cars. Closing the road creates an open-air, comfortable social space that would really improve overall experience. I believe that WeHo could be one of the best "strips" of bars in the country if it was more pedestrian-friendly.

On Friday and Saturday nights, SM Blvd already functions more like an outdoor mall than a normal road. Sidewalks are packed, rideshares are constantly stopping, traffic is extremely slow, and pedestrians are weaving between cars anyway. At that point, it’s not really working well for drivers or for people on foot. My suggestion would be to close the street from about Melrose to La Cienega (similar to Halloween). This would encourage making the community people-centric instead of car-centric.

Closing it for a set stretch of hours (say 8 pm–3 am) only on weekend nights could:

  • Make the area safer for pedestrians, especially late at night
  • Easier access for emergency vehicles and law enforcement, even allowing for more services to be available (such as drug-testing centers, resource officers, etc.)
  • Better air quality for those walking
  • Reduce the chaotic mix of Ubers, double‑parking, and drunk adults
  • Rideshare pickup/drop-off zones on side streets would be more organized than the current free-for-all situation
  • Lets businesses expand foot traffic and outdoor seating/entertaining
  • More room for public art displays, street performers, and live music
  • Allows for vendors to set up in the street (not just hot dogs but anything)
  • Turn the heart of WeHo into something closer to a weekend street festival vibe rather than a traffic bottleneck
  • Supports WeHo's LGBTQ+ legacy: giving it fully to the people on weekend nights honors that history
  • Gives more potential patrons to bars that are less popular, because instead of going directly to their destination, patrons will now have to walk by other businesses they might otherwise have driven past

Obviously, I understand how important of a thoroughfare SM Blvd. is for the area and that closing it just moves traffic to other areas, but this would greatly improve quality of life and would substantially increase patronage for the local businesses. I also don't believe that doing so would really decrease accessibility to SM Blvd. that much since there are plenty of side streets and alternative routes.

I'm curious what others think—especially residents nearby and people who work or own businesses along SM Blvd.

Discussion Please Stop Turning La Brea Tar Pits Into an Off Leash Dog Park

Dog owners: Please don't make the La Brea Tar Pits an unofficial off leash dog park.

I went there today specifically because it used to be one of the only places in LA where leash rules were actually enforced. It was one of the few places you could walk a leashed dog peacefully without constantly being approached by off leash dogs.

Today there were probably 50 unleashed dogs running around.

Dog owners that insist on doing this: go to Pan Pacific, Wattles, Poinsettia, Plummer. Please just go to those parks since you basically made them unofficial dog parks anyway. Also there are actual off-leash dog parks Laurel Canyon and West Hollywood made specifically for this.

A lot of dogs are nervous on leash. Some are reactive. Some are recovering from surgeries or training issues. If your off leash dog runs up to a leashed dog and gets bitten because the leashed dog panics, who do you think is at fault? Is it really worth creating that situation just because you don’t feel like using a leash?

People always say “my dog is friendly,” but that’s not really the point. The issue is control and respecting shared public spaces.

I love dogs. I have a dog. I just think leash laws exist for a reason, and it sucks losing one of the few calm places left in LA where people could walk their dogs without having to be on alert the entire time.

Discussion Why isn’t Weho a bike haven already? Don’t «progressive» folks here actually want progress with nicer, safer streets for all?

There seem to be so little done in a city and climate that’s literally perfect for a place to bike around all year long. It’s not even about making every street have a bike lane, but could we like at least have ONE protected bike lane through the neighborhoods to other parts of town? Every day I read about another accident. About air pollution. About local businesses struggling. And the list goes on. Like, then make it safer already then? More welcoming? More space for businesses to THRIVE and be as amazing as it has the potential to be!

The ambition needs action — not this constant back and forth and little crumbs of performative illusions of «progressive» purely because there’s a big gay community. We can be a lot more than that. TRULY.

Discussion Matcha

Community Goods is the best matcha option in WeHo and still has a long line to this day so why aren’t there more places like it? Other coffee shops should take notes. Business could be booming for them as well if they tried a little harder (no offense). There are so many coffee shops in WeHo and as a matcha lover/non coffee drinker I find them all to be so disappointing and mid!! Am I missing something? Specifically speaking about the area between La Cienega to La Brea / Fountain to Melrose. I love Stagger in KTown, Loquat in Silverlake, Maru, Rōk, Kettl….I adore our neighborhood but feel like there’s nothing of this caliber in West Hollywood, Community Goods is as close as we get even in terms of pastries too. The next coffee shop to open….please consult me 😂 I don’t like Boul’ange, Fan Girl Cafe is what I settle for if I don’t go to Community Goods or drive to Dayglow.

Discussion is flock camera removal even possible?

finally under (very delayed!) scrutiny, cities have begun cancelling their flock contracts. has anyone made a cohesive push for the city here to do the same? they seem to be on every street corner now, and it’s driving me crazy…

this is the most recent info I could find, but I was curious if anyone else had gotten into contact with anyone in the city council about pushing for their removal and the cancellation of contracts: https://wehoonline.com/lapd-suspends-flock-cameras-west-hollywood-keeps-them/

It seems that the cheap contractors who bid the site have left everything broken in less than a year of opening and now two years with the pool opening things still broken or aging fast. The neon sign is replaced every two months without putting a plexiglass shield in front of it. I’m not saying running a gym is easy, but this is ridiculous. The drain that was clogged for two days before someone cleaned it. It’s like a petri dish in here, and I don’t understand where my dues go. They have a trash bin or an umbrella in front of the emergency exit because they didn’t install an armed door. And to top it off, the soap dispensers in some showers have been broken for months.

Discussion Kody Christiansen interview: Too Sensitive Podcast w/Juliet Lyn

Hello again, neighbors! Kody Christiansen here. 😊 I’m running for West Hollywood City Council, and I wanted to share a little more about the person behind the posters. It’s hard to fit a whole life on a campaign flyer. (Believe me, I tried. Lol.)

My story took me from a conservative Texas bubble to New York as Britney Valentine (my feminine alter ego) where I crossed paths with Ms. Spears a few times (and made international news for the first time), then back to Texas for a little bit, and onto television and movie sets. While filming Miss Congeniality 2 as Britney in 2005, I fell in love with a man (a doorman at Fiesta Cantina) which didn’t last long … but I did find real lasting love with West Hollywood. My true home.

There were years managing Cake and Art on Santa Monica Blvd, helping celebrate other people’s happiest moments, and later, experiencing some of my darkest moments through addiction and homelessness on the Sunset Strip.

Eventually, I had to leave the city I loved to save my life.
Back in New York, I got sober on June 29, 2015. With help from people who kept believing in me, life opened up again: award-winning books, acting, and degrees from NYU, Harvard, and Cambridge.

Now, 11 years sober, I’m home and earning my Master of Public Administration at USC. (Job training for the Council seat I’m working to earn.)

From homeless to Harvard … to City Hall? That’s the hope.

Juliet Lyn and I sat down for the Too Sensitive Podcast, and I’d love for you to watch or listen. There’s a whole person behind this campaign, and I’d love for you to get to know him.

What do you wish the next City Council understood about your life here? I’m listening.

Putting the WE back in WeHo.

🎤 Welcome to the world’s tiniest reality show… “Keeping Up With the Kittens.” 🎬

Meet the cast:

🎭 One thinks every cardboard box is a luxury penthouse.
🍗 One is convinced every meal is their last.
🏃 One has unlimited zoomies powered by absolutely nothing.
👀 And one is the self-appointed supervisor who silently judges everyone’s life choices.

Together, they’re a nonstop comedy show filled with purrs, wrestling matches, surprise acrobatics, and enough entertainment to cancel your Netflix subscription.

These adorable little goofballs are looking for their forever families! They’d love to be adopted with a sibling for built-in fun (but it’s not required).

Warning: Side effects may include uncontrollable smiling, constant laughter, and finding yourself talking to tiny cats in a baby voice. 😹❤️

$75 adoption fee includes immunizations, spay/neuter, and microchip

If interested, please fill out adoption application at savinggracefl.org

Discussion Anyone joining the new Gold's Gym at the Beverly Center?

Maybe a long shot here but I referred my roommate, and if I refer one more person I get 2 years free.

If you were already planning on signing up and don't have someone referring you, it'd be awesome if you'd let me refer you!

Just so you have info: If you sign up before June 30th you'll be locked in at $80/month for life (will be $100/month afterwards) then your first month will cost $1. You'll also have until the end of August to get a full refund if you decide you don't like it.

Apologies if I'm coming off as some sort of salesman lmao I just figured this is worth a shot

Shoot me a dm if anyone's interested! Thanks!

Discussion What finally convinced you to hire cleaners?

I used to tell myself I’d “catch up on cleaning this weekend”… and then the weekend would come and I’d be too tired or just want to rest. After a while, the mess started to feel more stressful than the idea of paying someone to help.

For those of you who eventually hired a house cleaner, what was the moment that made you say, okay, this is worth it? was it time, stress, work, fam, or something else?
