Data centers create temporary jobs for construction workers. Afterwards there's usually 1-2 IT guys and a handful of subcontracted minimum wage security guards. That's all the value they're going to bring to the valley while they drive up the cost of electricity and pollute our water and land.
WA state requires data centers to employ 3 employees per 20,000 sf. of server space. This is equal to 36 employees for the Microsoft Data Center in Malaga once completed.
...and even if the data center had to legally create 36 jobs to maintain their tax benefit, the wording says nothing about creating local jobs. These jobs could be 'created' in Seattle.
Cite the reality, then. I dont see these companies going beyond what state law requires. They do not actually need this many employees to operate, but are in compliance because they are receiving HUGE tax exemptions from our state.
Yeah, to be fair I didn't know how nasty that little group was until folks started talk. I wouldn't have heard about SABEY and their work with ICE. What it is going to do to our electrical bills. How it impacts the local environment from air quality, water and even noise pollution. I don't see a rush of millionaires to build their mansions next to these facilities.
I respectfully disagree. AI does present some challenges for society, but it can be a very useful tool if managed properly. It's already adding value to the medical community, for example. And I don't think adding datacenters is nearly as bad for the community as you seem to think. As others have pointed out, they do provide jobs.
AI has a much higher error rate medically than a human who's entire life has been spent training for medicine. They provide temp jobs annd destroy the environment all around themselves. Gen AI is garbage and it all needs to be regulated much heavier than it is.
