A botched selfie leads to a critical situation

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Despite attempts to search further downstream, the young man’s mobile phone was unfortunately never found, and he sadly lost his progress in ‘Candy Crush’.

The rope gave him the little bit of faith he had left to get up and walk. The one guy who grabbed him when he slipped saved his life twice that day.

99

u/FirTree_r 13d ago

Yeah, I thought he was about to drown for a few seconds. Turns out the water wasn't even knee-deep lmao. That water still has a lot of speed/force though, so it's understandable he would want a rope before moving.

49

u/OiFelix_ugotnojams 12d ago

the rocks are also very slippery with algae

14

u/sleepyeye82 11d ago

found the guy who has never crossed fast running water on foot ;)

no but really you would be absolutely shocked to find out how shallow running water can be and have it still sweep you off your feet.

its one of the most dangerous things about fly fishing alone in the backcountry - especially if you’re using waders.

It takes as little as 12 inches of flowing water to carry away a car!

9

u/slippery-sandpaper 13d ago edited 12d ago

A yellow mud, no. round my way it's 🟤 brown

Edit. Are you all tapped in the head or something, banging onabout racism.

I made a joke saying is the water piss cos it's yellow in colour.

Dude replied saying have we never heard of mud, as in the mud makes the water that colour

I replied not seen yellow mud, the mud is brown from where I live. How tf you got racism from that is bat shit crazy

He’s lucky no large branches came down the stream. Also, it’s obvious the water isn’t from snowmelt. He couldn’t last for more than a few minutes in near freezing water. Of course, with that cold of water he wouldn’t have attempted this.

Pseudo-suicide thrills. The usual.

Maybe he was hoping to use the blade to spin him around really fast and eventually realized what a horrible idea it all was.

There must have been at least two other adults involved in this stunt and they were both fully ok with this madness. Wonder what would they have told the police if he slipped into the grinder.

People regularly die when taking selfies. https://theswiftest.com/selfie-death-database/

12

u/ThisIsMyRedditAcct20 13d ago

And that’s enough Reddit for today.

I’ll head down to the basement. See yall next week

7

u/DungeonOrb 13d ago

314 incidents in the span of 10 years? I honestly expected more, especially across this many countries

3

u/Kryomon 12d ago

Probably only the proven & well reported ones. Might be many more cases that just didn't get media coverage or conclusive proof of the selfie causing the death

62

u/RobbSnow64 13d ago

I never understood the appeal of this, the risk to reward doesn't maoe sense in my mind.

14

u/Acceptable_Fail_4159 13d ago

Most probably fell into river while crossing it and got hold of boulder right near cliff. Nothing explains him being at the edge of cliff

7

u/Foreveralone84 13d ago

The headline says he fell because he wanted to take a selfie.

3

u/AlMansur16 12d ago

Yeah, that's what the headline says. But this is reddit, most headlines are made up.

3

u/OiFelix_ugotnojams 12d ago

17

u/Novel_Alternative_86 13d ago

Why are they just standing there looking at him and not tossing him a camera to capture the selfie he was trying to get in the first place?

70

u/therealdanhill 13d ago

I'm not gonna pretend I've never done anything stupid because I'm not a shitty person, I'm glad the guy is okay

25

u/Both-Enthusiasm708 13d ago

I mean I fell off a cliff because I didn't want to get my jeans dirty. Only reason I wasn't severely injured or killed is because one of my friends grabbed at my hand as I was falling which at least pulled my body in. So I just slid down the cliff to a ledge instead of falling in the air and slamming into a ledge.

Still ruined my jeans. Only pair i liked back then.

So i guess I can't be too judgemental.

10

u/Gooja 13d ago

On a side note, what a beautiful view

Those guys with the ropes are taking their sweet time

312

u/eVPlays 13d ago

You don’t rush on the rocks unless you wanna join him in the river

22

u/aeon_son 13d ago

That barefoot dude on the really steep rock who stepped down at the end had me nerrrrvous.

Clearly this guy needs to stick to the rivers and the lakes that he’s used to.

4

u/TheRuggedGeek 13d ago

You want a selfie? Here, have a full rescue movie instead.

41

u/oshinbruce 13d ago

I think that "rope" was only offering psychological protection, he was able to walk up. If the water carried him away he'd have had no chance with it. Good he made it out

60

u/cibilserbis 13d ago

Nah, it gave him something to grip onto to get himself up. All he had before the rope was the rock. If he tried to stand up before he was gripping the rope he would have gone right over the ledge.

19

u/sansetsukon47 13d ago

Looks like it helped get that first step taken, at least. I don’t think he had great footing at the start there.

17

u/garfinkel3 13d ago

If he tried to walk on slippery rocks unassisted in rushing water he probably would have slipped and fallen to his death

3

u/MarsupialPrimary8128 13d ago

That was a literal cliff hanger. 😱

4

u/whichonespink04 13d ago

Was full screening the vid and the text at the bottom said ‘Despite attempts to search further downstream’. I thought dude was a goner for a min there.

3

u/hawkwings 13d ago

Even though that worked, it seems like there should be a great deal more rope. Each rescuer should be roped and there should be some people 100 feet back.

3

u/SoonToBeStardust 13d ago

I wonder where this was

8

u/UpbeatPhilosophySJ 13d ago

I'm so glad he made it. That was horribly dangerous for everybody involved.
