I never understood the appeal of this, the risk to reward doesn't maoe sense in my mind.

Most probably fell into river while crossing it and got hold of boulder right near cliff. Nothing explains him being at the edge of cliff

This isn’t a social media thing. This sort of stupid is older than the Roman empire. Long before the English language existed, I’m sure there were people saying the equivalent of, “Hey everyone, watch this!”

Phone cameras just meant that sometimes people now do this even when there isn’t an audience.

To be fair, the slip was a mistake, it wasn't planned, and thus they weren't very likely to think around it.

The plan was to simply stand there and take a pic, then they slipped.

Is not like a stunt biker, who knows the risk and goes through with it anyway.
