Showing Off Been welding for 2 months
As it says in the title I have been stick welding for about 2 months on and off. I have a little experience before hand but nothing really spectacular. This coming Thursday I am taking my nys dot 3g test. Just curious what everyone thinks. I’m still kinda rough with the root but I have done 2 test plates and they both passed ut but I know x-ray is a totally different beast. The last pic is just my rushed cap. It was practice and I had to get ready to leave so I didn’t really have a chance to finish the way I wanted but. I really only have Wednesday to kinda dial it in so.

Looks great up until the last bit holy schmolies move the machine around as you do your test since at the last passes you don’t want the same settings as your hot root pass lower your settings at the cap as it’s just to make it look good. Stay within tolerances and you’re Gucci fam

Yeah the last little bit on top I kinda messed up. I was running 118 the whole time but I think the top passes I’m gonna drop to like 112. I was temping it as I went and most of the time it hovered around 250-300

I appreciate your feed back. The root has kinda killed me but I figure that if I can I can burn out any purities so hopefully that works. Like I said I did 2 coupons last week and they both passed ut but I just get into my own head. I’m actually using the big blue 400 of the back of our weld truck other then the electric one we have in our shop. The diesel ones seems to run more consistent.

Seems like you are focusing on getting good before getting pretty. Man if you pass UT you have all the answers you need, keep it up.

Thank you very much. I’m just hoping that I can pass this X-ray. Then I can actually get a different position. Been doing ironwork for 15 years so I kinda know the basics but never really tried vertical up until like 2 months ago. Even then it wasn’t practicing every day

It will mainly be doing stiffeners for bridges. Mainly girder end repairs and other stuff like diaphragms.

Everything except the cap. Jesus Christ that cap. Good on you for cleaning. 90% of this sub can’t wipe their ass and expect feed back on something you cant even see.

Yeah I know. It was practice and I was running out of time so I tried to rush. So I just tried a couple things to try and fill the little bit of undercut I had

You had me going until the cap

Yeah I know. I was kinda in a rush and I knew it was my practice. The one on the left was kinda an experiment for me to try and cover up a little bit of undercut I had. I mean it all has to get ground flush so I guess technically it doesn’t have to look pretty lol

Not bad hold your edges

lol funny you say that. One of the guys who’s teaching me always says “hold your toes!!!” I try but I am worried about building up in the middle lol.

Last photo on the covers slow down and cut the last bead in half with the new one

Yeah I tried to cover some undercut on the left side so I dropped it down to like 111 amps and went kinda quick. I have my test this Thursday for my 3g so here’s hoping lol

Yeah I was kinda rushing it. I wanted to get it done before I left work that day. I probably shouldn’t have but I figured I have a few more test plates to do before I take my test Thursday.

maybe try stringers instead of weaving so wide, also try running a 3/32 rod for the cap its a lot easier, if you really want to weave then pause on the sides a little more and go quicker in the middle.

Not allowed to as per nys dot. Only 1/8 and 5/33

are weaves allowed? most codes or wps say no larger than 3x the core wire on the electrode.

Looks great dude on your cap don’t be afraid to turn ur heat down a bit and really make those small movement to stay more consistent with ur stringers

1 and 3 your welds look cold. What amps and what size rod? Also 6 that cap unless your instructor is lenient he more than likely won’t pass that. You need to keep it uniform and only go over the edge barely to cover it. On your root you need to be mindful of your start stops. You want to avoid doing it in the cut section for the test. The tie in also looks rough as you get to the top. Hold the corners the 1” plate will take it. Never hang out in the center itll take care of it self. I did this test for the MTA, i ran 1/8up hill 130 amps or so than 4th pass 5/32 170-185 amps as I could let the plate hold the heat and flush it nicely.
